Is this aim good enough to pass diamond?

So after getting back into OW and taking it seriously again, I’ve been able to work my way up right below diamond, by flexing between all supports except Mercy. Usually I’m playing Bap or Moira, and it has been working very well. It’s given me enough confidence to try streaming again, now that I don’t one-trick Brig like before.

Problem is, my aim is trash. I can hardly play any hitscan hero. So, I’m concerned about it since I just can’t get it down, regardless of mouse, mousepad, DPI, sensitivty, reticule, etc. I mostly rely on positioning, reading the battlefield, target priority, and overall game sense. Is aim absolutely essential for rising past low diamond, or can I still rank up within the aim needed? If it can keep me going, how far until it doesn’t work any longer?

Twitch should show how I think I generally do with Bap, Ana, and Zen (literally at the 1 hour mark). This is also the worse game I could pick out from the videos Twitch saved, showing how bad it can really get. I tried many ways to solve my aiming issue, so if there anything that anyone here thinks would help, I’d appreciate the advice.

And yeah I think aim is definitely important if you play Ana or baptiste, zen for example. Good tracking is kind of important for any hero.

I cant watch clip now, i will try to watch it when i will be home.

do you have 144 hz monitor and a PC which can pull them out?
secondly, there are a lot of map trainers, i would suggest to check out Iddqd YT channel and practice aim for 15minutes before every game session. if u put some goals for yourself and reach the you wll see that its fun training.

Yes and not really. I recently invested in a 144hz screen, which was upgraded from 60hz. My framerate sticks above 120 generally, but when streaming it goes down to 80-90. The rest of my hardware is very old, so until I can upgrade it all at once, I’m stuck with the framerates I have now.

That dosent look normal, streaming should have very little performance impact. Are you using CPU or GPU encoding?

Software encoding. A person who helped me set up streaming said it’d be the best option, and I didn’t test out GPU encoding (my GPU is a 1050Ti, so not that great). Game crashes every so often as well when streaming, so performance can get very poor; however, the average framerate is at least above 60.

You should definally try gpu encoding. OBS supports new NVENC that has very little performance impact with decent quality on 10series GPU. Your GPU has a delicated video encoder that your game wont use anyway, while your CPU need to handle both game and streaming. GPU encoding should give you better performance, and if your upload speed is decent, you can tune up your bitrate to keep a good quality stream.

I will try this. Ty for the advice (it’s down in 720p because of the performance; if this works I can put everything up).

Ty. Any input is appreciated. Not being able to move past diamond wouldn’t bother me, but I at least want to make sure I can stay in it.

just play brig if u dont want to aim

Yes you can break Diamond without “great aim”. I did that myself and I’d say my aim is only decent (probably below average compared to other Diamond players). As long as your positioning, game sense and ability usage are good aim is not going to be a very limiting factor.

Having said that I did have a quick glance at the clip just to make sure we weren’t talking toddler levels of bad aim and it could definitely have been worse but at the same time I am sure that if you put some time into it (be it deathmatch, aim trainers, workshop codes) your gameplay could benefit from a bit of improved aim. What I noticed though was that you seem a bit lazy when it comes to “aiming” - there were long periods where you would walk and just look straight ahead without checking spots around you and also when stuff happened you tend to move your mouse “kinda slow” at times. Lazy aim is quite often attributed to have too low of a sense but I think it’s something you can practice away just as other bad habits. I play at 3200edpi myself but I always try and make a deliberate effort to be a bit more aggressive and snappy in my movements because I know that if I would auto pilot I’d run the risk of getting lazy myself.

I’d say it’s a little greedy to want to climb past diamond without putting in the effort and time to improve your mechanical skills on aim-based heroes.

I mean sure, if you’re playing no-aim heroes to climb, it’s totally doable because their kits put heavy emphasis on other skills (like timing/callouts/coordination/ability usage)

But if you want to climb on heroes like Bap but not improve your aim… that’s not really possible. Their value scales with the players aim. Their whole kits are balanced around the high tier player accuracy in mind.

Like an Ana who has 50% accuracy vs and Ana who has 70%. One is literally doing 20% more than the other

Don’t get me wrong, with luck and playing in a stack, you could maybe get to low masters if you stay the same as you are now, but you won’t be appreciated by your other teammates probably (and you might get called boosted). For example, in GM you’ll get flamed if you miss a sleep dart on an ulting genji (has happened to me more than I like to admit)

I improved my aim by practicing two hours a day using Ana-bot practice, aim arenas, death match’s, 1v1 lobbies and aim practice custom games.

Aiming is all about muscle memory. You are fine-tuning your muscles. It’s like when a toddler is trying to paint, they’re just flailing everywhere. But as they grow up they can paint delicate lines because they have more control over their arms. It’s the same with aiming but on a microscopic level (pixels), and thus we need to refine it.

Just playing like you always do doesn’t improve your aim. You have to consciously aim each shot. Figure out why one hit. Why one didn’t hit. What did you do to hit that shot? Etc and slowly get faster and faster

Then you start doing it as second nature in game

If you desire to get better at aiming, you can’t give up. I’d say your aim is that of a typical plat player right now, maybe low diamond. You overshoot a lot as if you’re not used to your sensitivity (pick a sens and stick with it). You also don’t have confidence in your aim because you keep wasting baptiste’s regen burst to heal your ally even if they’re not in danger and right in front of you. Don’t do that. Just calm down and aim. You’re instilling a bad habit if you try to use regen as a crutch when you’re not confident in your aim. The higher you go, the more important it is to make every shot and every ability count.

Also if you want to stream, just stream. You should be streaming for personal enjoyment. Good luck, and have fun with it. Improving is a journey not a destination.

brig , Dva are hard heroes TO CLIMB from a casual mid plat team.ppl just feed and u cant help it

I disagree, your aim is fine based on your Ana gameplay, up to a Master level. Now it might need to be cleaner if you wanted to hang in GM.

I think you’re a bit worse at these than you realize, I didn’t plan on listing these but I believe that these can help you improve your gameplay. Here’s some examples:

As Ana:

Reloading
1:00:24 - You reload too soon 3 times shortly after leaving your spawn. Your ammo count was 10/12 (first reload), this was fine because no one really needed healing at that moment, but you should be careful reloading so soon in case you need to use your healing right then. Your second reload was 11/12, and while you couldn’t see your Rein because you delayed yourself a bit by changing to Ana after the match had started, you could have been healing him if you were pushed up a little more there. The third reload is the worst one, you were 6/12 when you reloaded and your McCree could have used some healing.

Positioning
1:00:26 - Your positioning needs work here, you expose yourself after taking a fire-strike from the enemy Rein when you could be holding the corner and just healing your team.

Awareness/Target Prioritization
1:00:58 - You decide to take some meaningless shots at the enemy tanks and don’t realize that your Mercy needs healing since she’s burning to death. Keeping your other Support alive is usually the best way to give your team the best chance of winning.
1:02:19 - You could have immediately dipped to the right to try to help your Zarya but instead take a few meaningless shots at their Rein. Your Zarya dies here, if she was high charge and if you had the chance to save her, you could have helped your team out significantly.

Decision Making
1:01:57 - You peak the corner and try to DPS their Rein. This is a poor decision in general, you aren’t giving your team any value here and you get hit by the Sym right click but then you re-peak the corner and get killed by the enemy Rein’s fire-strike. This decision really hurts your team’s chances of taking this first point, making decisions to help preserve your life as Ana is the best way you can help your team win.
1:02:41 - You nano your Soldier 76 but then TURN around and head back towards spawn like you’re going to switch characters. This is a game losing decision right here, especially since your Soldier 76 gets some picks. You put yourself far behind the rest of your team and it would have been worse if you went all the way back and changed to a different healer, because your team would be without you for even longer. Changing characters is fine at the right time, but don’t do it when your team is trying to push. You shoot the enemy Bob even though it is meaningless and you really need to get to your team ASAP.

Anti-Nade Usage
1:03:05 - You miss your Zarya with the nade here which really hurts your chances of keeping her alive. Perhaps you were trying to hit both the enemy Rein and your Zarya? If so, it was close, but it’s better to preserve the life of your Zarya here and lead your nade in the direction your Zarya is moving (backwards) so that you can hit her. You then take shots at your Zarya and hit her with the 1st shot, 2nd shot, but miss the 3rd shot, then use a sleep dart. If you would have continued to heal her and land 2/3 of your shots, she may have survived.

Nano Boost Usage
1:01:27 - You get your first nano here.
1:02:41 - You use your nano here. It ends up being a solid nano because you combined it with your Soldier 76’s ultimate, but you did hold onto it for a while. Looking for opportunities to use the nano sooner will allow you to build more nanos for later, which can often give your team a higher chance of winning.

Useful Comms
1:03:25 - You are arguing with your Soldier 76, even though he’s literally the only one getting kills in the last 30 seconds, he’s doing all the work and killing all the targets he can, but it isn’t enough because you are hardly there to keep your team healed up.

As Zen:

1:03:53 - You discord the enemy Pharah and then your harmony goes away. You proceed to tunnel hard on the Pharah, not regarding your poor positioning, and end up dying without giving your team any heals and dealing little to no damage to the enemy Pharah. In a closer game, you would have just thrown the game for your team. You should have discorded her and then thrown a shot or two out, moved to cover, called her out for your team, etc.

I peaked in high Masters 3950 playing Zen and Ana, the mistakes you’re making in the first five minutes of your gameplay here are what is mostly holding you back, not your aim. I don’t see you climbing much in Diamond making these mistakes, it hurts your team too much. I see a lot of potential for you though, you could hit Masters if you clean up some of these mistakes. Cheers.

Ty for the input. Once I looked back at the clip I saw several mistakes as well, especially with heading back to spawn and then deciding not to switch, but there are some areas you pointed out that I didn’t think of. Ty for the input; I’ll work on this stuff as well.
