Is there a way to disable all communication in game?

I have yet to encounter a situation in Overwatch where communication with my team was absolutely vital to winning and couldn’t have easily been substituted for common sense and awareness. Overwatch’s gameplay is relatively simple in comparison to other games like it.

I have, however, encountered plenty of situations where I have no desire to talk to the people on my team or hear their garbage opinion (the majority, actually), due to any number of reasons. Inting, trolling, sucking, blaming. Take your pick.

I know how to disable voice chat, but I can’t find the option to disable text chat.

I might be wrong, so forgive me if so, but I believe if you press ‘P’ you can click the little text bubble in the group/team/match sections to disable chat. Same way you disable voice, I think.

Oh I see what you mean. Isn’t that a match by match thing? I was referring to something a bit more permanent. For example, in the settings menu, I just turned off all the settings for voice chat. I was hoping there was something similar for text chat, that way I don’t have to do it every time I joined a game.

Ah, yeah. I don’t think there’s anything like that for text chat, unfortunately. Or if there is, I’ve no idea what/where. Lol. Sorry.

You might as well sit in spawn for the entire game if your going to do this. Oh and don’t forget to out that profile on private!

No worries. It’s not a bad solution. If that’s really all that’s available, I’ll just have to settle for it.

You might as well not play OW since it requires coordination 9/10. If I were a teammate, I would avoid you. You should join teamchat everytime, stop being so afraid of doing so. Let me mention it again, IT IS A VIDEOGAME, with people that you will probably NEVER get to see. What, you are going to cry because someone said that you suck? If you are not willing to join VC and communicate, then dont play Comp. Play QP where coordination is not present at all. This is a team based game. For example how am i supposed to tell the attack Torb that Junkrat put out a trap right at the door and he wasnt paying attention? He dies and thats just wasted time.

There are mute and report buttons for a reason, use them.

Yes, I am using them. That’s the point.

No.

You just have to do it every time you boot the game. After that, all consequent games have text chat disabled until you enable it yourself.

/hidechat

will just get rid of the chat entirely for your session

I don’t understand why people don’t at least join vc especially in comp. The number of close games that could’ve been won if people were using it probably 9/10.

Bunker comp says hi.

No, but really though, WHAT??

It’s a team game…communication is kinda important…and becomes more important as you get to higher levels …

Yes there’s toxicity (and you have report options if it’s an actual problem) but I think in general you should at least be in the channel…even you don’t plan on saying anything yourself (or don’t have a mic)…

at least if you care about the end result…

If not well more power to you :man_shrugging:t2:

Talk to your team. If you can’t trust your team to communicate well, you can’t possibly trust them to keep track of everything all the time and know what they should be doing.

There is no substitute for saying “Reaper is above us and about to ult”, “Let’s lead with Sound Barrier and push around the left side”, “I’m holding back around the corner until our Pharah is in position”, etc. etc. infinity.

You need to communicate to be trying your hardest to win no matter what anyone says. Think you’re good without talking? Logic says you could only be even better if you do. Just because you CAN win without talking doesn’t mean you should. I could probably steer my car with my feet, too, but it doesn’t make it a good idea.

Fascinating stuff. I’ll gladly take all this “advice” to heart when my experience of Overwatch tips the scales and gives me more teammates I actually want to listen to than teammates who are straight up dckheads.
