The title speaks for itself.
They need to be dealt with harshly. Bad connection? Don’t play the game. Mommy calls you for dinner? Don’t play the game.
It’s quite simple. Leavers must spend their penalty in the menu. If you leave the game, the penalty time pauses.

The issue is in punishing the real offenders effectively without causing unnecessary collateral damage.
No such thing as collateral damage. Leaving is leaving. Doesn’t matter why.
Doesn’t matter if it’s power loss, an earthquake or rage quitting. They should all be punished for the sake of the game.

And while your self righteous rage is understandable, it is a poor foundation for a logical system that affects the entire player base.
This hurts the game, which is theoretically the thing you are attempting to save.

They do get punished. Increasing suspensions & -50 SR
He’s looking for something like a season ban on your first or second DC/leave.

I think quitting hurts it as much, especially in the lower tiers where some players don’t care as much.
At the very least backfill it and the player that gets added can’t lose SP if the team loses but can gain if the team wins.
It’s pretty straight forward programming.

I think making punishments more draconian hurts more people than the actual leaving does
No. Just more than a little meaningless slap on the wrist.

You mention sitting at the menu and pausing suspensions but no actual suspension lengths unless i’m misreading?
Most of it was you saying that there are zero exception to whatever that punishment would be

For the bleeding hearts keep the penalty times the same but force them to be in game time.
Or backfill as I posted earlier.
I don’t think it’s possible to differentiate the reason one leaves so exceptions aren’t really possible.

By exceptions i moreso meant people who aren’t repeat offenders being caught up in a severe punishment.
Many people have suggested things like season bans for 2 game abandons in a season. -300sr per leave even on a single DC, that sort of thing.
I don’t mind the idea of having to play out your ban in quickplay or a backfill queue or something of that nature.
What some people here don’t seem to understand is that at the lower levels losing SR isn’t that important.
Playing out the suspension in quick play is meaningless. I’m talking sitting in the menu staring at the screen. You can play any game type while suspended. A suspension is supposed to be a punishment, not just forcing someone into another game mode.

I think as long as it keeps repeat offenders out of competitive matches, anything else is you being vindictive.
But that’s just me.
I understand your perspective, i just don’t agree with it.
Lower levels have as much right to their SR as everyone else. Punishing people who aren’t repeat offenders to make yourself feel better isn’t virtuous or noble.

Well, I’m not virtuous or noble, soooo.
Besides, it has nothing to do with feeling better, it’s about treating those who play the game properly better than those who don’t.

Which is completely subjective and framed from your anger at the situation.
Players falling into your categorization of those who “don’t play the game properly” are people who don’t chronically leave and dont have internet problems.
You can’t affect one without affecting the other. I’m all for an increase in the suspension timing ramp up rate, but anything that affects someone who has one or two DCs in a season becoming harsher is not acceptable (or fair)

It’s not about being fair though. It’s about shielding the 90% from the 10%.

And that’s why you dont’ get to make the decisions.
Using a nuke to fish is not a good idea just because it’s effective.
You aren’t just shielding the 90%, you’re hitting them with the same punishments as the 10%.
