Is there a problem with learning to play Widow?

I only started playing this game a year ago and didn’t play much back in 2016, but find the game fun for the most part even if I don’t play it often. D. Va is fun, Kiriko is wild and Reaper is perfect for venting stress (lol). However I want to learn to be good with Widowmaker because she requires more awareness, better aim and good prediction to play…it just comes with a lot of scorn… mostly from the foul comments of players, in unranked no less.

So I know I’m NOT good enough for competitive play (for any character really), I just play for fun in unranked. So it always bewilders me that everyone expects you to be a god or a master of a character in unranked mode of all places. My school of thought is: I will never really learn a character playing against a computer and the only way to “get good” is playing against real people even if I have to lose over and over until I get the character right no matter how difficult.

Not complaining that Widow is difficult (far from it), but I get the impression everyone tries to discourage learning her gameplay. I’ll be upfront about it, I don’t play that many competitive FPS’s so getting a headshot on a moving target with full health ISN’T EASY…but I try nonetheless. Honestly I would rather lose with Widow than win with a boring character.

You will get flamed even in unranked if you aren’t performing well

So it’s not really about learning Widow then. You want to play Widow because it’s more fun, despite being bad at it to the point that you’re frustrating your teammates.

When someone picks Widow in unranked modes, that tends to be the case, which is why people are already thinking, “Oh here we go.” You’re right that you have to learn somewhere. A lot of Widow players play the widow FFA modes to get their aim warmed up or improved.

The problem isn’t so much that you’re playing Widow. It becomes a problem when you play her on maps that don’t suit her vs a team that also makes it difficult for her to be effective even in a good player’s hands. You’re dead weight.

Playing Widow on Havana, people probably aren’t going to bat an eye until you’re 1 and 5 and you guys can’t win a teamfight. Or even if you’re 5 and 1 but all your picks are coming after you guys have already lost the fight.

It’s a team game. Sure you need to practice and ultimately that’s your decision, but you can’t blame people for being annoyed they have to play 4v5.

I think I get the gist of what your saying although I think I could have worded some of what I said a little better. I guess I just approach this game differently I suppose. I’ll give Deathmatch a shot.

Thank you for your comment.

It’s good for getting that muscle memory down. But don’t get me wrong, you can absolutely practice your widow in quickplay. I’m just of the mind that you do it on maps that suit her, that way you get more from it while you’re improving and your team is less likely to screech at you.

Once you become a Widow god, you can force her into whatever situation you like because you know you can get value from it.

Ultimately though, the common refrain is its quickplay who cares. I don’t agree with that, but it always seems like I’m in the minority. It’s up to you what kind of player you want to be.

Either way, good luck.

You may be learning Widow, and that’s completely fair, but it’s also fair for your team to be frustrated when they’re constantly fighting 4v5 because you’re 1 and 9.

It doesn’t matter if you’re learning, you should still know when to switch off a hero if you’re constantly dying. You aren’t going to be doing much learning playing respawn simulator. Despite QP being more chill, people are still trying to win.

Skirmishing is probably a better place to learn Widow.

Just ignore them. That’s what I do.

It is a rite of passage. You are not allowed to be considered a Widow main until at least 1,000 children tell you that you deserve to die. Sorry, I do not make the rules.

You can do both. And Widow IS fun. I would recommend deathmatch if you want to practice your aim against real people. It also doesn’t have the toxicity that comes with playing widow in qp. There is some, of course, but there is always some.

Don’t forget the assault rifle, in the event you score a body hit on an enemy, I’ve used it to great effect against wounded targets. Happy hunting! :+1:

Turn off chat and just play. Even losses are a good learning experience, you won’t get better against her counters if you’re constantly avoiding unfavorable matchups. More than half the roster of heroes are a bad matchup for Widow, you might not be playing any games at all if you’re constantly dodging them. I play regardless of what the enemy team is, and I will struggle through every single dive, death and whining comment I get for it… in quickplay, of course. It’s just a game and they have no right to tell you how to play in a mode practically no one cares about.

On the other hand, Widow is extremely gimp and a frustrating experience even for good Widows. She is very, very easy to shut down if the enemy knows what they’re doing.

Widow is so much fun! There was a match on Busan where a Doomfist punched me off a ledge only for me to use the grapple to get back up to watch him die to someone else, he typed “why didn’t you die!?” and I replied “grapple is so good.”

I keep getting the feeling I’m miss using the assault rifle function because I keep thinking the bullets should pack more of a punch, then again aiming while moving and jumping while the other guy is doing the same thing is a bit tricky.

 respect

FYI, you struggle at your own risk. Most people probably lose any perception of having fun with Widow fairly quickly if they’re not familiar with her. Despite what most people might say, she is not easy to play.

Well, let me just give you a heads up that as you get better…the scorn will not decrease. This is just the Overwatch experience. :joy:

I give you my condolences for playing widow as a new player.

Both your team and the enemy team are gonna hate you.

Even if you’re good, both your team and the enemy team are still gonna hate you.

Best way to play widow in peace is to leave voice chat.

btw ignore the people that are saying you should only pick her on x/y/z maps.
With the nerfs the only widows that survived are the ones that can force her on terrible maps.
Only time I’d swap is when their entire team swapped to murder you

Don’t listen to Irelia. You can be better, Squall. :sob: You can be the chosen one!

I would unironically start with the new practice range shooting range (long range, moving targets) and then train there just to train your accuracy. Its the main part of widow. Even if your positioning is bad (use always high ground), if your aim is good you are doing fine.

Its great that you read the gamemodes correctly. Many cant.
QP for learning, fun and whatever.
Ranked for toxic sweaty tryhards.

You can still “learn” in ranked. In fact youll have to sooner or later.
Just learn the basics of meta, and swap at max halftime if youre countered.
You dont need to be pure perfect meta pick, just dont be 100% on the Z-tier
