So, in 2017, Reaper got a second Halloween Terror legendary skin. To promote it, “The Reaper” in Junkenstein’s Revenge wore that skin instead of the ‘Pumpkin’ legendary like he did when the mode was introduced in 2016. This bothered me for a couple reasons, but I figured it would pass, especially if we got Junkenstein’s Revenge variants to play later on, but Anniversary 2018 came along and The Reaper still uses the Dracula skin and the mode was pretty much unchanged.
To me, it seemed like Pumpkin was very intentionally designed alongside the other skins that made their debut in Halloween Terror 2016, given the look, it matches with the comic that the event skins are tied into, it would still look just fine alongside the ‘Dragon’ skin that Symmetra/The Summoner uses (her Shield Gen this year is another topic entirely), AND, the thing that bothers me most of all…
There are multiple quotes from the players, including “Sorry, ‘pumpkin’…” and “Peculiar choice of headwear…” that just don’t make sense with the Dracula skin. Like-- the commentary from Rein and the players’ dialogue MADE that event so special for a lot of players, myself included, and mocking Reaper, despite him being a legitimate threat, for his somewhat hoaky, edgy nature is a common theme in the Overwatch community, and even in-game as seen by multiple pieces of interaction dialogue. To me, it really isn’t worth keeping the Dracula skin for The Reaper in Junkenstein’s Revenge when we already have a skin that fits so well that wouldn’t be hard to re-implement.
Or maybe this whole topic gets thrown into the trash because Blizz will want to promote Reaper’s third legendary Halloween skin. Or maybe they just really don’t care and can’t be bothered to change stuff that still technically functions in the mode. /shrug
- tl;dr :
it’s not important, but I really like ‘The Reaper’ in JR using the Pumpkin skin and I feel like Blizz will forget, and maybe even keep in the dialogue about the pumpkin skin for the second year in a row and give me the big sad even more.
