(Jump to TL;DR below if you don’t like reading too much)
As I opened the “Introducing Role Queue” under the news section for Overwatch, I quickly jumped to the new “Competitive Rewards” System. I wanted to see if I would be rewarded a lot for being able to play decently at Gold rank with support, and then having more rewards by decently playing shield tank also at Gold rank. I knew in my heart that I’m just a lowly Bronze or Silver player for DPS, but I thought this wouldn’t matter anymore.
But as I read along the description, and looked at the table for previous and new rewards. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The competitive points were reduced, and could only ever be “more” than your previous earnings IF you actually played all 3 roles at your highest rank.
Blizzard… Come on. I didn’t grind to play competitive better just to receive a third of what I could previously earn. Hell, let me give a scenario:
Before, you could earn 250 Comp points at gold, regardless of what tier any of your roles are.
Now, lets put a scenario in the new reward system, and that your highest possible rank is Gold, and was obtained because you decently played healer, while the DPS roles you could only get up to Silver, and Tanking only up to Bronze. Then, that means you’ll earn 100 comp points for Gold Rank healer, while having only 50 comp points for Silver ranked DPS and 25 comp points for Tanking. A total of 175 comp points. A deficit of 75 competitive points.
Compared to a possible earning of 250 competitive points for Gold rank if you just played healer, last season. This new Competitive Rewards system is a downgrade.
Now, lets create a scenario for a Master ranked player as an example, and as a “TL;DR”.
TL;DR
Any Masters players out there (and this is just a scenario) who is Masters at Tanking, but lets say only platinum at Support, and Diamond at DPS. You will now Receive 450 comp points for Tanking, 200 comp points for Support, and 300 comp points for DPS. A total of only 950 competitive points. That’s 250 less than what you could earn last season, 1200 Comp points. And get this, if you only want to play your favorite role, which reached Masters last season, you only get 450 Comp points by the end of the season.
Thus, they force you to play the other roles, and if you suck at it, you wouldn’t ever get anything close to your former rewards.
This new Competitive Rewards Systems needs some numbers increase, because having lesser rewards might just make this “big patch change” receive only a mediocre approval.
Then again, that’s just my opinion. What do you guys think? Because I am incredibly disappointed by the rewards change. Despite it looking like it’s just a small number change, I don’t want to spend more hours playing additional matches. I still have to do work and have daily necessities that require attention.
