Is tanking as boring for most people as it is for me?

I can play support match after support match or damage match after damage match and not get bored for a while. I play one tanking match and I am mentally spent. Is this true for most people, or do I just personally find the tanking heroes boring to play? Would like to hear peoples’ thoughts on the tanks heroes individually, or the tank role as a whole.

edit: I have discovered the joy of swatting Pharahs out of the sky as Winston

Being mentally spent and being bored are not the same.

Tanking in OW1 is the most mentally challenging Role in the game as you control the pacing, space, and positioning of an entire match. I agree it is a exhausting and I cannot do more than 3-4 matches a day without being absolutely beat while on the role, despite being an incredibly high SR Rein OTP.

I numb the pain by spamming Dva voicelines.

That’s about right.

Stand around and do something boring while the rest of your team gets to go have fun.

Would probably play Winston all the time but CC kinda kills that. Probably the same with DVA. Sigma or Hog only last for a couple matches before I get bored playing them

Tanking is… a very involved job at this point.

I have fun at it, but also it puts you on this position where you see every mistake of your team, from picks to gameplay.

I find that CC isnt really the issue. Most CC is blockable by barriers and things like DM/bubbles. The issue is that tank defensives have been nerfed AND damage across the roles has been increased.

That Ana dart could have not hit if my bubble had lasted 1-2s more.

As an ex-tank player, for sure.

  • You lack range so you’re at the mercy of the enemy team
  • Only 8 heroes is really not enough… Especially when 4 share the same protection
  • You’re massive, so no quick escape for you.
  • The balancing of tanks just make the experience 2X as hurtful and Overwatch 2 doesn’t seem to really help tanks with that either…
  • They lack self reliant most other roles have so you’re pretty much amazing or terrible depending on your team.
  • For a lot of them the playstyle overall is pretty boring. No action in holding a shield or shooting one without the needed damage.

The original concept for the role was really cool. But the devs just seem to be like dps players as the tank role really isn’t treated right with love…

This is also true. I really do enjoy playing Winston lately but it’s hard too enjoy him with CC or too much damage in general in current OW.

Really the only tank that has that atm is Rein and maybe Zarya. Every other tank is pretty active or has range/dmg.

Supports are, as we saw in OW2, just as reliant on tanks are. If anything the issue here is the damage role, and how many of them are just… too independent when it comes to how much they need a team.

Short answer for me no.

The only tank I kinda like playing is hammond but even he pisses me off quickly because his ammo is so low and his reload feels like it takes forever.

All tanks are either close range or medium range with the exception of Orisa.

Now I agree that for divers it is less of a problem as their mobility allows them to close the distance.

But for Rein,Zarya,Roadhog & Sigma. Not a lot you can do with maximum of 25 meters… Originally that was the goal of protections- to allow them to close the distance. But as time goes by - tanks are not as capable as before with their nerfed protections making it much more problematic to reach targets.

It’s really not a big problem punishing tanks playing outside of their range. Most pokers, kiters and even some brawlers can easily play around them without a problem.

I do agree on the dps part but for the support one I kind of struggle… After all, support’s main goal should be before anything enabling their team and for that you only to see your team members not the enemies.

So brawl & poke is much less of a problem as a result. Especially when you take into account most support has some sort of survive ability tool and the smallest hit box in the game while usually playing the back lines or at least the middle one.

They also has self heal and their own damage to allow them to return a fight.

Noting bad about a little countering btw, so it makes sense each support would struggle with something just like dps and tanks (for example, Brig,Rein & Mei would all struggle fighting something like Junkrat).

But while support and dps are smaller and can play more safely, tanks are kind of forced to get hit by anything, as they are MASSIVE and play in the front, and their job is to be hit so it makes it much harder when you are countered… Tanks can’t run too easily, don’t always have the range to return a fight and don’t even have the self heal most of the times to let them survive longer.

So overall, while support aren’t capable of doing too much damage or making space - they can survive pretty well considering their job, size, self heal & survive ability tools.

While tanks kind of rely heavily on their team just to survive.

i like playing tank until i have to face hog. i absolutely hate playing tank against this stupid hero. one game against him and im probably going back to dps even if i have to wait 15mins.

I feel the opposite. I find the dps and support roles somewhat interesting but when I start up ow its to play tank. Its one of the most unique roles in a videogame that ive ever played. I think every tank is wildy different from one another and i get excited when i get maps that favor rein or Winston. I do think the roles biggest flaw is that you cant get much value out your character if theyre on a bad map. And alot of the maps favor some playstyles more than others. I think this game would benefit from a map and character pick and ban system like siege.

you dont tank you are literally a hog main

I despise tanking and I also find it mentally taxing, but not because it’s boring. Tank is actually really fun. Rein, Zarya, Dva are so much fun. I love playing as them… But holy hell is tanking hard. Like, just so insanely difficult. Not because of cc or all that, just because making decisions is hard. Trusting your supports is hard. Knowing when to be aggro or defensive, when to push in, when to hold back, am I feeding? Am I being too passive? Am I a Chad? Am I shieldbotting too much. Making all those decisions, while managing your cooldowns, while keeping track of your teammates’ whereabouts, while paying attention to the enemy players so you don’t get baited out or MTD’d…

It’s

All

Just

So much

My brain just cannot grasp that role. All you tank mains are amazing. I’ll support your fat booties to the ends of the earth and beyond, but I do not envy your jobs, it’s maddeningly hard, and yet you manage. Respect. :bowing_woman:

Personally I find playing Winston very satisfying. Learning how to juggle enemies and jump them properly is fun. Though when I do too well, the enemy team switches to heavy damage hitters like Reaper, Hog, and Hanzo to stop me. Then I have to play another main tank which isn’t as fun. I don’t mind some tanks but when I play Rein, Orisa, or Sigma I usually don’t have fun unless my side tank and supports are actually playing with me.

I’m assuming this is for OW1.

Tanking is boring there. Just a punching bag for the enemy team. No surprise when so many people just pick Roadhog for the dps experience and priority passes.

Also support is only slightly better. Feels less like supports and more like healers for most. Feels too much like a babysitter role.

dps is the most boring role in the game just because of the tanks you get and the tanks the enemy gets… it gets boring when tanks claim “dps diff” when they dont even know their second move once they get to choke. Not to mention that most of the tanks I get now of days are just boosted because tank players get boosted just by forcing orisa, sig for the past 3 years and its clear that they do not deserve that rank if they can barely play those heroes at their new peak.

support does seem like the most fun role just because of the fact that you have to pay attention to everything on the field and you are also constantly having to rotate yourself.
