Is something wrong with Rammatra?

On paper he is a very good/balanced tank, but the more I play him the less I pull wins (he has a below average WR in Overbuff but it’s nothing too bad).
Every single time I use him I have to swap later for another tank that does something better than him and because of counterwatch.

Weirdly enough, he is my favorite tank along with Zarya but I still feel that since the tanks were debuffed a few seasons ago I can’t pull anything with him.

His ult is great, his primary fire is good and his barrier does the job BUT… I think his nemesis form lost much of the aggro power due all the other balances that happened to the roster.
I end up using it to hold position and mitigate damage: fighting any other tank or dps (even with sup speed) doesn’t do much in my experience.

Am I the only one who has this feeling?

I play him as my main tank, and I honestly like him a lot. He’s definitely a bit below the standard, but seems like a tank that’s like one change away from possibly taking the game over.

As far as what I’d want, I think there’s more room to put power into Vortex. Startup, size, projectile speed, there’s lots of things to mess with besides pure uptime. An improved “ceiling” for its hitbox, if nothing else. I don’t want to mess with Nemesis too much because it seems like he walks in whenever he wants with it already and any more would make it a bit too easy. Staff feels like it’s right there. Hitbox changes have made it feel much more consistent. Ult is fine and a true playmaker ability.

I think his thing is that he plays into most matchups very well, but there’s always a better choice. That’s not a bad thing, though. It lets him be a fine tank to blind pick, hold it down, and then swap later if you feel you need the superior matchup.

I did play him a whole bunch, but ever since they went overboard with the bonus armour on Nemesis and then hotfixed in a nerf that weakened him in omnic form, I kinda dropped him. Dumping his power budget all into Nemesis means that if the enemy takes measures to counter Nemesis, Ram’s just up the creek. Before, while I felt disadvantaged by certain matchups like Hog and Mauga, I had a bit more leeway to get something done with my wizard’s staff. Not so much now.

Besides which, I don’t want to play Rein, let alone Diet Rein. The idea of squeezing out maximum value from both forms is what appealed to me, but that doesn’t seem to be the vision for Ram.

It certainly didn’t help that I’ve started to play OQ more, where the problem’s exacerbated. Ram has 325 HP in omnic form outside of RQ.

Nowadays I just go Zarya or Sigma instead. I might give Hazard a shot.

any hero with two modes of operation is always going to be difficult to pull off, for one both modes will not be strong compared to speacilists or one mode will be stronger than the other, in rama case definitely his meleee form is stronger than the normal budget sigma form, so he has the bastion problem of down times.

not that he is weak overall, it takes a lot more nuance to make it work compared to say just playing sigma or reinhardt.

what this means is while he may not have strong counters dude to hybrid nature , he will also have constant things that play against him than others.

for example a sniper may not be great against a sigma always. but against a rammatra they have a window to shoot when he goes into brawl mode and make him block like reinhardt holding shield against snipers instead of fighting.

rammatra brawl maybe strong against others like rein jq etc, but he will be weak when he is in his normal form trying to play sigma.

All that said he is still powerful just takes a bit more effort to make him work, that said his ult kinda makes up for it.

Hes not bad, its just not not the meta for him. He is only effective in close range brawl comps, so with everyone running doom, dva, winston he doesnt get value and against orisa mauga hes dead befire he gets close enough to punch. Only place he is good in current format is if team plays together and have speed boost to close distance.

problem with Ram is that he’s mele in his “stronger” form,

so if you’re against team that just spams damage down range, your nemesis form only uses half of it’s entire value,

and his barrier doesn’t have any meaningful uptime for general mitigation, just brief onesided wall that can block important damage/abilities…

Because he’s a terribly designed hero who’s only good at just living forever and not much else

I even question this affirmative. He can deal with Rein and JQ due his pool of armor, but he just “withstand” the damage.
I’d say it’s a even match up because JQ can’t kill him but she can pressure a lot with her heals, wounds and shotty and Rammatra just 50dmg punches her in a slow rate of fire. If Rein has a sup in his back he deal with Rammatra as well until Nemesis wear off.

Yes, his magazine size for primary fire in Omnic form is stupid stingy.

If they buffed it to 125 or so he’d be complete.

Oh and they were dumb enough to revert his pummel changes- breaking barriers in infinitely stronger AS A TEAM than piercing barriers (which is just stupid and weak and will almost never be better but yay the ram player feels better about it so they asked for this, well enjoy your weaker hero then)
