Is platinum a bad, mediocre or good rank?

So I placed at 2300ish in season 15 and climbed up to plat with ease with an 80% win rate on Zarya… I only play with my friends, who usually only play on weekends, so I don’t play comp that often, but I played about 20 games as zarya last season and had an 80% win rate. Placed in plat 2760 for s16. I want to know if this is low ranks, mid ranks, or high ranks?

Statistically speaking it’s above average as gold is average. You’ll come across many people who want to rank shame and devalue your progress but don’t listen to them. It’s fairly impressive considering you don’t play often. Keep at it.

Honestly, it’s pretty funny how mad people get when you say they wont get past plat.

It is gold in white with an extra bar in the middle, in which it symbolizes all sins in competitive Overwatch.

it symbolizes looking more aesthetic than silver

A little above average; mid rank. Compared to higher ranks it’s trash, but overall it’s not terrible.

It’s technically above average, but I don’t really see it as such. I think the game’s playerbase is a bit “bloated” from people with non-FPS backgrounds (or just new to games in general), so at least in comparison with other FPS games, the average rank here is below average in other games. That’s just from my perspective however, as there isn’t really an accurate way to make any comparisons.

Here’s my crappy tier list on where I think ranks compare to other games in terms of general FPS abilities:
Bronze - Actually worse than silver 1.
Silver - Probably silver 1?
Gold - Still silver, still really bad.
Platinum - Below average but getting there.
Diamond - Average.
Masters - Above average.
Grandmaster - An exponential scale from 4000-5000 SR, where 4000 SR is pretty decent while 5000 SR is literally video game Jesus.

Of course that’s not really how it works, there are grandmasters with horrible aim, and plats with really good aim that are just really bad at Overwatch as a game. Having good FPS skills is only one skill out of many in Overwatch. I’m silver 3 in CS:GO, and grandmaster on three accounts in Overwatch so it’s not like anything makes any sense.

Placing gold initially is normal, I did too. And climbing up to platinum the next season with an 80% winrate is insane, I was in gold for like 3-4 seasons before I got to platinum. I really don’t think you’re going to stay in platinum much longer so it doesn’t even matter if platinum is a bad rank. :joy:

people start getting “good” at high plat low diamond, that’s when most people understand the game well enough or have good mechanics

but compared what’s objectively possible in ow everything including masters and most of GM is pretty bad at the game, especially in solo queue

My problem with that is masters being top 3% of the player base. So I have a difficult time saying top 3% of anything is the cut off for only above average. I mean sure one can say anyone under GM is trash but GM is top sub 1% so now we are getting into such rare air that it seems wrong to say less than 1% of the player are even “good”.

I think Overwatch is unique due to it’s hero mix allows players to rank up to “average” with just mechanical or just game sense. Where Diamonds is the start of needing to know a bit of both on any hero.

Like plat is average FPS play, diamond is sort of average “Overwatch” play from the point of view of game sense, but most Diamonds are going to be over average at the FPS basics.

Like Diamond is the performance sedan rank of Overwatch. Faster than an average car, but you’re not really a sports car. Plat is the pony car, the mustang or camaro of Overwatch ranks. Like you can say your v6 Mustang is a sport car, but we all know the truth.

I personally hated being in platinum for the time i was there. I feel like the skill differences between teams really show in that rank. You would have teammates that honestly belong in bronze one game and then have another game where your team has gm level coordination and mechanics. Same goes for enemy teams. I found many games in plat to either be steamroll or get steamrolled. Most games were decided from the first minute. Luckily ive been in diamond since season 10 and enjoy it alot more.

It’s all of the above and I’m pretty sure almost all ranks bar maybe GM/Top500 are in this category where you see good, bad and mediocre players all the same.

Its barely above average, but on a scale of the level of “good” the players are its still bottom tier. A decent rank is Masters and u are officially ‘good’ at the game when u hit around 4200.

it a flip coin, sometimes you on good side, sometimes on bad side.My advise is make 3 stacks group of each good with 1 role,if you as tank, group together with support and dps friend.

no good plat is very verrrrry strange

You have to ask yourself about the performance metric.
Then you have to ask yourself if some of that performance metric is from aimbots.
Like, does it make you look like you don’t perform at all, negating the performance boosts below diamond.
Diamond is NOT average.

  • Bronze - 8%
  • Silver - 21%
  • Gold - 32%
  • Platinum - 25%
  • Diamond - 10%
  • Master - 3%
  • Grandmaster - 1%

old list is old but effective. I highly doubt it would restructure or deviate far from these numbers.

its average, but once you get better, u will find it a trash rank. basically the only good rank is GM the rest is trash tbh.

Gold is average. Most of the player base is in gold, so that’s your average player. Feel great about yourself, because that’s a HUGE skill gap increase, whether others view it as bad or not.

Your tier list is completely non-sensical. You can’t tell how good someone is at a different FPS game, based on their overwatch rank… I mean, if someone is a diamond+ hitscan main, that is a strong indication that they will be above average at other FPS games, but you can’t tell me that a GM mercy main (yes I know my name is mercy main, but I’m actually a hitscan main) is better than me in FPS skills because they are GM and I’m diamond… Or that a GM junkrat main has better mechanics than me at other FPS games.

I’ve been accused of hacking a handful of times when I play CS, I’m reasonably confident that wouldn’t happen to a GM mercy main.

Also dafran is pretty much an overwatch god, but he kind of sucks at most other FPS game that I’ve seen him play on stream. He’s generally above average, but nowhere near top tier in games like CS:GO & Paladins, so that’s just further proof that you can’t extrapolate results from this game onto FPS games in general.

Also no one has ever gotten even close to 5k SR in this game, what are you even talking about?

But to get back to the OP’s question, kind of hard to say whether your rank is good or not. You said that you almost always play in a stack, you didn’t say how many people is in your group and we don’t know if you are getting carried or playing well in your role. So we don’t even know if you belong in plat. Basically the rank you “belong in” is the one you can solo queue your way into and that is yet to be determined for you. Also a win percentage over the course of 20 games is basically meaningless. That is too small a sample size to reach a conclusion for

hes using a list posted by jeff himself in the old fourms, i believe its from like season 3 or 5. regardless things change and it was generally understood too take in all players even players who just played there ten games and thats it. but its the actual stats from some season.

also i dont think anyone would debate the one trick mercy gm is a gm fps player but since were talking overwatch she probably has the bigger brain. but im confused why you think his lists about fps games? its about overwatch which is for sure a good hybrid of moba and fps.

What are you talking about? He specifically said its a list HE came up with… and he specifically said his list was about how the skills translate to OTHER FPS games………. my point is your overwatch rank has almost no carryover to other FPS games
