Is OW limiting itself with its "realistic" Sci-fi theme?

OW’s universe is within the sci-fi genre, but it tries to remain “realistic”.

Doesn’t that limit the options of its hero designs?

Most MOBA games include all types of imaginary creatures, which make the hero themes endless. One’s imagination is the only limit.

Same goes for the maps to an extent.

Will this not hurt OW in the long term?
Do OW players like this “realistic” aspect? Or are they open to seeing more mythical characters?

I for one would love more heroes like Hanzo and Genji, with mythical powers, and it looks like foxgirl might have something like that

No please. If you want some mythical characters you should go play Smite.

The Sci-Fi setting of OW is one of the thing that make it awesome.

Yeah some super power like Genji and Hanzo are ok. Some animals too. But Aliens and Gods? No thanks.

True. I draw the line at the murderous hamster engineer.
Pure, grounded, sci-fi. No silly things like magic.

Isn’t Moira’s kit based on magic?

Yeah Mr. White! Yeah Science!

I find the fantasy theme to be way more limited actually. If you have played 1 game, you have seen it all.

This is why I prefer sci-fi more appealing in general.

I think OW has its own world. They can do with it whatever they want. Spirit dragons? Talking monkeys? Hard light? Everything is possible.

If you call science “magic”, sure.

What science? Kamehameha science?
She looks like Goku when ulting.

Do you not see the tech she carries around on her back the entire time, or nah.

Zen, Hanzo, Genji already defies the realistic sci-fi theme. It’s playing loose with the rules already.

Agreed. I once played Baldur’s Gate, and it completely ruin all fantasy games ever made, forever. Couldn’t even play BG2.

I also made the mistake of reading LOTR once. Ruined fantasy books for me.

Stupid boring fantasy.

Nah, there’s already some inexplicable/mystical stuff going on in OW, it’s just very very rare compared to super advanced future tech.

If anything I kinda dig the 99% tech 1% maybe magic thing it’s got going. In a world where everything is explainable with tech having magic dragons and vague monk powers is fun, it allows some freedom when designing. You can look at Rez as either an advanced field medicine/technique capable of bringing someone back from the brink, or Mercy’s a necromancer. Fun!

“Realistic”

Uhm. What part of a time-travelling British lady is considered realistic?

What does that have to do with Overwatch? Overwatch isn’t a MOBA.

I like the more grounded theme, it lends itself to logic better. Most of the time at least, they need to take a look at how JQ’s knife interacts with things.

We have a talking hamster, gorilla and a bunch of beeping and talking robots.

No question she will and we will see others.

It’s willing to make breaks - Hanzo’s dragons are one, so is whatever otherworldly crap Moira is into, and let’s not get started on the instaheal biotic field and Zen’s orbs… I mean Sigma has an anomaly black hole somehow existing in his head… I think as long as it doesn’t stray too far into mysticism they are okay with it.

I wonder how many people got this reference - LOL.

Aren’t aliens literally sci-fi
