Is Overwatch on switch dead?

If any of you guys play OW on switch at all I’d really appreciate your input.
I’m going to be away from my PC at christmas, but where I’m going they don’t drink or even celebrate the holiday so i think i’ll be pretty bored.

A few things I want to know;

  • Are the queue times as bad or worse than on PC?
  • is the performance reliable? I can handle 30 fps, what i can’t handle is 30fps dropping to 15 all the time.
  • Are there actually active custom games lobbies?

Basically, is the game dead on switch, that’s what i’m worried about.

I’ve heard nothing but bad things about OW on Switch from really long queue times (much longer than PC) to generally not that good of performance.

I wouldn’t recommend it ever. Get you a nice singleplayer game you know you will enjoy on it

It was alive?

I have it and I play it. All these replies from platform elitists are pretty cringey. Yes PC is better, yes the frame rate is poor. No you should never take the game serious on switch because the quality of play is low and your teammates aren’t trying to win. But to answer your specific questions:

The queue times are better than PC.
It’s a reliable 30 fps but it does drain the console battery after about two hours
I don’t know about custom games.

All in all it’s a good substitute for when you can’t play on PC. The gyro aiming in handheld mode is good enough. It’s by no means as competitive as PC but you can play on the toilet or at a hotel or while you ignore whatever’s on TV while you sit on the couch with your s/o.

30 FPS for many (including myself) is just not doable and the new mechanics are super gimmicky.

Switch player: “Oh look! I can play Hammond and move him around by moving my joycons in different directions!”

PC player: “Sweet… I can do the same by moving him around with my mouse.”

overwatch in general is dead. blizzard chose to make the game too easy in order to appease a certain portion of the playerbase, and now thats most of what’s left because almost everyone else quit.

most of the good support players left during mercy meta. most of the good DPS and tanks left during brig meta.

losing to someone who isnt as good as you because they chose something easier is not conducive to a game’s long term health

At the very least, Overwatch is going to serve as an example as how NOT to handle a PVP game’s balancing. Because Overwatch had a chance to really take over the PVP scene, and they squandered it for mercy mains.

pretty funny stuff

I’ve dealt with this in rocket league on the switch, I ended up having to open up my matchmaking settings to all platforms.
Console players play with much improved peripherals (i’m looking at you joycons), frames rates, performance, response times, and PC players are more-so, adding to that higher refresh rates.

Queue times are a big deal breaker for me, cross-play is almost a lose-lose even if it cuts queues but even that’s not available last I looked.

Diablo 3 is a better time killer on the switch tbh

Amen.

The ironic thing is, that the lessons were already learned before Overwatch even existed.
It has been well known in game design that

  • Hardcounters
  • Crowd Control
  • Insta-kills

are very frustrating for players and may result in your game dying. Alot of games learned that lesson before the hard way, and alot of game designers learned from their history.

But not Blizzard. They want to learn it themselves - and they will.

That would mean that it was alive to begin with.

none of the things you listed are what destroyed overwatch. maybe hard counters. but instant kills are fine, snipers are in basically every FPS ever made. CC is fine, when done right, CC exists in every MOBA.

the problem with overwatch is that the balance is and has been anti-competitive. the better team should win. thats the core nature of competition.

in overwatch, the team that wins is the team that commits to playing easier and easier heroes and strategies.

Only hard-to-pull-off insta-kills are fine. Meaning Widowmaker. Hanzo and Doomfist are way, way too easy.

And at that Widowmaker has too many insta-kill shots because she can charge up her gun to maximum so fast.

In many games another thing to balance out insta-kills, is that of a shaking crosshair. Since there is no such thing in place for Widowmaker, it becomes easier in OW than in many other games. Add to that the fast recharge time, and you have a monster at the higher levels.

It is even worse for Hanzo and Doomfist, because the aim requirement is much lower. For Doomfist it is barely existent.

yeah hanzo and doom are too easy. and its too easy to counter flankers that are the counter balance to glass cannons

Lol buying a shooter on a console.

Get Mario Maker 2 if you don’t have it.

OW on the Switch is decent for what it is. You can play it anywhere, some heroes are actually more fun to play on the Switch version (Doomfist, Widowmaker,)

Downside it drains the hell out the battery fast and it shouldn’t be played on the Switch (Or any console) if want to play the game seriously for comp.

I imagine it exists largely to entertain kids that don’t care about performance both gameplay and technical/FPS. They don’t care about that stuff but they get to play as NINJA or omg A MONKEY! and that keeps them happy.

It would entertain a serious player temporarily much like a phone game would, but it’s hardly the definitive version. Would not rely on it as your sole holiday entertainment. The Switch has much better offerings for that.

-almost any Nintendo first party game
-Diablo 3, designed from the ground up to burn time
-Shovel Knight, which just released the final DLC
-TONS of stuff on the store. Romancing Saga, Shantae, really something for every genre.

They just had to dedicate resources to a Switch version just to compete with Paladins.

Can expect slower patches now due to the extra fee to patch on the Switch. And future decisions for the game will be impacted by the capabilities of the Switch
