Is moira as a healer throwing in most comps?

so recently one of my lower rank friends wanted to pick up moira of all things. and I realized as a tank main I’m kind of biased against her in most comps.

her best comps are probably triple tank and quad tank, something you never get on ladder (i’ve played quad tank two rounds in 1200 hours of tank play).

But the bigger issue is let’s suppose that on any given team of 6 players there are 3 players that are higher MMR than the others, and the moira is one of them.

Now in order to carry and win, this moira needs to make stuff happen and support the other higher MMR players cause if those players die the probability of losing a fight drops dramatically.

however, my issue is that a huge number of the characters cannot be enabled by a moira very well.

High rank genji on your team? moira ball for healing at long range is not as good as mercy/ana…and even zen at enabling that genji.

divers dont’ work as well with moira, dive tanks, don’t work well with moira, defensive orisa setups don’t work well with moira because the team spreads out.

widowmaker doesn’t work well with moira. Hanzo needs to reposition use his wallclimb constantly to find high grounds to shoot from. So basically moira does well with rein zarya, static dps (mccree, soldier, and hanzo when he’s not off flanking)

I feel like with these requirements 70% of games on ladder are going to be games where you cannot enable most of the players on your team, and in overwatch, enabling the lowest skill players on a team does not result in a win.

I’m not saying you can’t climb, but it just seems like you’re stacking the cards against yourself.

it’s like playing roadhog into zarya + brigitte in the current meta, you’re just asking to drop a rank

“I’m not saying you can’t climb, but it just seems like you’re stacking the cards against yourself”

Then you’re not throwing

There are no throw picks/characters

Players throw, not characters

Players can throw just as easily with any of the available characters

I’ve played Moira from 2500 SR several season ago up to 3800 SR and she has only felt like a throw when we don’t have a defensive ultimate (Zen/Lucio) on defense. With her recent buff to the recharge rate for her healing, she can do pretty well at solo healing.

If the Genji is high rank he should know that if he has a Moira he needs to get health packs if he is on his own or return to the Moira when he is low. Tell your team via the voice chat or text chat, to return to you for heals since they can’t always be by you.

i see. i’m not the one playing moira. my 2000ish friend is. I just feel like no genji in gold is going to be able to do that even if he is one of the better players on the team he is going to need more than a ball.

But maybe I’m misjudging, in any case if my friend performs well on moira then he will move up in rank and eventually get genjis that actually can handle themselves.

I only have 5 games on moira and I can completely crush players in gold just by spamming heals (everyone gets damaged too much for no reason in gold) and then using my ult to break the point. I had some really stupid games where I was getting about 3 times as many ults as would appear in a pro game, so I guess it’s not really an issue climbing at least at lower ranks since regardless of whether you help your team win a lot, the PBSR will help you climb.

Mostly she’s just not good with dive. So I hate to name-drop, Jayne has mentioned a couple times how good are Moira flanking with Tracer can be. If a Moira is flanking the Tracer, then it can be dive.

Essentially, she is good where massive amounts of healing are required. Have you ever had a Moira primary you at the same time she heal orbed you? The amount of damage you can tank as a full health Reinhardt is insane.

Similarly, she can act as a close-range Zen, in that she can heal you with primary, and “discord” the person you are attacking with damaged orb.

Unfortunately a higher ranks being a second rate Zen with a much worse ultimate isn’t enough, even with much higher close range healing.

Yeah your throwing of you pick her with a bad team comp

No your not throwing it she’s in the right one.

Merely picking a certain character (regardless of which one we’re talking about) is not throwing, regardless of map, situation, mode, or team comp

not ever

Moria is even more of a dedicated healer than Mercy is, sure Moria has some DPS but Mercy has Damage boost + Rez.

In short all other supports have more utilitiy than Moria does.
In lower ranks this isn’t really a problem - a good Moria can supply a lot of heals for a “poor” team. However as you go up in rank teams need more utility than healing that is why Moria’s pick rate drops off.

The best measure for, if you should play Moira is simply the level of game you are playing at.

In most comps? No, in some comps? Maybe.

Moira is a fantastic healer at close range, so she is definitely better with a tank heaver brawler comp, or a slow push death ball comp, she is definitely not good with a dive comp, but it can work if she is able to fade in with them, but it’s risky because she’s used her escape ability as an engage ability so you’re putting a lot of faith in your team to secure an advantage, or at least protect you enough for your fade to come off cooldown.

I’m an Orisa main and I always love Moira’s, her healing is even better than mercy at this point, but if your comp wants to take the high ground with Winston/Wrecking Ball/D.Va, Pharah, Junkrat, Mercy, etc. then Moira is going to be tough to get value out of you’d be better off running Lucio.

Well let me give you a map mode and situation.

1.map Nepal
2.mode control
3. Situation team is trying to run goats

Me “I think I’ll play torb”

Do you have a question…?

??? Only Triple Tank and Quad Tank? I mean, sure, she gets a lot of mileage out of those comps, but that doesn’t mean she ONLY viable in those comps.

The only thing she’s not good at is healing characters at a distance. Double-Flanker comps are bad for her. Widow is bad for her. This is why she’s not meta in the higher ranks (Tracer and Widow are all over the place). But if you play a shield tank, and people actually use the shield? She’s great. She’ll outheal any other healer easily.

While she has little utility, Moira can do a considerable amount of work with little babysitting from tanks and DPS.

She’s perfect for the middle ranks.

Moira is very, very strong in the lower ranks where she can easily get away with swapping between high damage mode and high heal mode. In Master+ people don’t let moira get nearly as much value out of her dmg as in the lower ranks. Moira very well may be one of the strongest heroes in the game until masters where she starts to scale down a bit.

Stats show that Moira is currently the most effective main healer in terms of win rate below Diamond by some margin. So no, it’s not throwing at all.

I can personally vouch for that but probably only on QP.

Had a Moira tailing me as i moved towards the 2nd CP on Volskaya, with just her (Moira) and a Genji, we kinda bum rushed the Red Team and my Rein did not die as i wrecked havoc. Other 3 blue team came up from Spawn and we got the win. iirc, everything took under 5 minutes and it was only 1 push.

Insane healing numbers.

Moira is a fine hero to pick up. She’s very self reliant, great close range healing and ok long range healing with orb. Yes she can’t support dive heroes very well, your friend will just have to accept that. But she’s great with Rein and Zarya who are pretty good right now.

I’ve never gotten the whole ‘Moira throw pick’ thing, if I pick Moira I can make it work.

Edit: if your friend does enough damage they can make up for not being able to heal at range. Damage orb + ok tracking? Easy pick on anyone she gets near. She can farm ult very fast (you can have it multiple times a fight) to heal people in the back. Plus, not every game has only 1 healer in low elos, there’ll be games where they’ll get a Zen or Ana to help them out. Or they can find a Zen main to queue with that can orb targets like Genji and Tracer to compensate.

My take is that it is not so much Moira is a throw / troll pick especially between Bronze to Gold but throwing / trolling is more likely to accredited to the player playing her.

I mean, if Moira ain’t healing and going full dmg mode…well…
