I recently ran across someone playing widowmaker (while I was our team’s widowmaker) that was inexplicably able to kill me while they were in cover.
With wall hacks enabled, I watched them stand stock-still behind cover and then I was headshot. In the kill replay, they GENEROUSLY jumped out of cover and plopped a bullet in my head. This happened 3 more times during that match. I’ve seen this type of crap in games like Destiny 2 but this is my first experience with something beyond a triggerbot / aimbot in overwatch.
It’s possible, to an extent. Like most shooters, Overwatch relies heavily on client-side hit detection, especially noticeable on “hitscan” weapons. High latency can sometimes be advantageous because of that.
Whether someone’s intentionally “switching” in that context would be pretty hard to detect. If they’re disconnected for long enough, the server will remove them automatically or drop their hit registration.
“Switching” certainly isn’t exploitable on the level it was in Halo 2 (where it became so well-known), because Overwatch runs on dedicated servers, as opposed to P2P hosting.
Right, this is what it reminded me of as well. The difference being in Trials of Osiris a lot of people would run around out in the open with their lag switch on, soaking up entire clips of damage to the head without taking damage.
In this case, with the dedicated servers and the “favor the shooter” programming, I bet it leaves people wide open to get destroyed when they lagswitch. But people at long distance in cover can afford to be lagged out for about 2500 ms without getting disconnected and connect a shot still I think.
That’s true. With this “Favor The Shooter” stuff in OW, a lagswitcher would be even more invulnerable than in Destiny…IDK, if it was me, and I saw that, I might report the person if only to get more eyes on it. It’s a tough call.
Keep in mind, Destiny is also P2P while Overwatch has dedicated servers. There is no host in Overwatch games so they can’t exploit it to nearly the same extent. At most they can make their ping bad enough for a split second that they’re not where they appear to be, but it heavily affects them as well. I’ve had my ping get terrible before you can’t hit anything.
Oh yeah my bad, I forgot Crucible is P2P. Hmmm well then, I know what it sounds like, but I have no frame of reference to see how it would work in OW. I’d still be at least tempted to call some attention to it…
It’s not like you had to be the host to lagswitch in crucible, though. The P2P main problem was that you could easily DDOS people because their IP was readily available through some navigation in windows task manager of all things.
Whether it’s a dedicated server or not, you can cut a wire of your ethernet cable to disable send, and cut a different one to disable receive.
And yeah I reported the person. I’m honestly not even upset about it, I was more surprised I had never seen it before in this game
That was like a thing for a short time. These days, any sort of lag switch(or lag/desync hacks) in D2 will get you perm banned in like less than an hour or so …
Lag switching would not be effective in this game due to Favor the Shooter, also if too many packets are lost, you will get dropped. (on PC Blizzard servers anyway, not sure how Sony and Microsoft handle this)
What you may have experienced is Favor the shooter. What did the kill feed show you? Were you in his crosshair when you were hit?
Right, I figure with favor the shooter if anyone was near him, he’d be dead instantly while lag switching.
I described what I saw in my original post, but here’s the idea:
Infrasight active… I see the enemy standing behind “deep cover” (way too far back to shoot around). I stand there with a shot waiting but they never move. Suddenly I am dead. Kill feed says it was them. I watch the replay and they literally JUMP out of cover 2-3 yards and get a super clean easy headshot on me.
Repeat 3 times.
Edit: And for the record, my SIM was at 6.5 / 6.5 / 6.5 ms when I checked it immediately after.
Has this happened in other games outside of this one person?
If not then it could be something new. (as in new cheat)
But if in the kill cam he popped out hit you and you just saw nothing, then there was definitely packet loss from one of you.
If this is the only time it has happened, it’s more likely it is him.
Yeah my sim is stable like that too, but sometimes I get these inexplicable shots on me, that show up different in killcam, and it turns out to be a 144hz monitor or something. BUt I’m talking like milliseconds not what you described.
Yeah, I’ve never seen something like this in Overwatch. I’ve definitely had cheeky-shot moments where I’m like “no damnit, I was behind cover!” which I chock up to favor-the-shooter.
This, this was nuts. Literally sitting there watching someone over the course of 2-3 seconds do nothing, then watch a replay of them jumping up and down and killing me.
