Is it really that toxic right now?

Honestly, all I have seen on the forums lately is just people complaining about how toxic the game is right now. But, in my opinion, I disagree with that. Yes of course there are the occasional toxic person and maybe a game thrower, but like 9 times out of 10 it’s a fine game. Yeah sometimes we lose, but normally its not because of some super toxic player. Like maybe its just my elo, but I know that when I was down in gold and silver everyone told me diamond was the most toxic. I’m just not seeing it.

Everyone is saying that overwatch is dying, because of the toxic community, and of course there are stupid people out there, but really, this happens in every game out there. Games just get people that think they are the best, it happens, I don’t see it more in the OW community than other games. I think people are over reacting to what they think is a occasional toxic player or game thrower.

P.S this isn’t me saying that the game isn’t “dying”, but everyone is blaming it on toxic people, but I think a lot of it is balancing issues as well.

Honestly I find it more toxic on the forums than in game lately. Sure you get one or two games every now and then with people flipping out on teammates, but I’ve found the majority to be alright.

Idk, maybe because i’m just a positive person, so people aren’t as toxic around me, but I rarely see toxic people at all

Yeah, honestly that’s the truth, but they aren’t affecting the games I play, so how is overwatch “dying” when it’s all forums?

Honestly, is it verbally toxic or abusive? Not really. I mean I haven’t really gotten into Comp that much because I’m not good enough to carry the team to victory. On the other hand there is very little diferenace from QP and low silver imo. I placed around 1500-1600 SR.

I win some, I lose some but not really making too much progress. The thing is people aren’t abusive or angry. People just don’t care… Almost no one is in voice chat, barely responds to chat and pick some of the worst hero match ups possible.

People instant lock DPS they suck at, want solo tank and solo heal (or even no tank with a solo heal). Honestly team comp is usually more balanced in QP than comp for me. But people don’t’ rage or yell, they don’t say anything.

Overwatch tends to be more toxic outside of the game then inside. In actual matches, there is the toxic player, and maybe a thrower, flaming the whole team (despite that the toxic player is the most useless half the time) once in a while, but for the most part, exaggerated.

The most toxicity I’ve seen in relation to Overwatch is here on the forums

It’s not. Forums are only a very small fraction of the population that actually plays any game. People who visit forums also tend to want to be very vocal about things so, surprise, some people who are upset about something will proceed to claim the world is ending because of X.

People can be…pretty nasty at times. Not everyone, but some can be. The game, I feel, isn’t the issue. The characters and their mechanics, respectively, are doing as programmed.

Players are sentient(?) beings, so…yeah, it’s bad, unfortunately

I think the only thing I found toxic so far are the people who are hypersensitive little SJWs reporting people for even the slightest annoyances in their eyes, to the point where they’re proudly proclaiming ZOMG I JUST BANNZORED 50 PEOPLE TODAY WITH REPORTS! That to me is basically just as bad as the people who are really causing trouble to begin with.

Otherwise, I’ve had nothing but good groups to play with, and I enjoyed each game. Great job guys, you won me there!

Much of it is a perception issue. Toxic individuals are going to be a lot more noticeable and stick to memory than all the countless people that didn’t act toxic at all. Another problem is what people define as toxic, since someone’s definition might be, “A user that specifically goes out of their way to ruin the experience for everyone else,” while another person’s might be, “An enemy saying GG when really it was a BG.”

That said, there really is a toxicity problem with Overwatch that I certainly see a lot more here than I have other spaces. I blame the competitive environment of the game, even casual games feel like desperate “fight tooth and nail to get a victory” matches. In these instances, it’s easy for people to see a simple lack of skill or strategy as purposeful sabotage of the game, and thus, toxic. When every game is like this, it’s easy for people to steam their own vegetables, and then they’ll go on and steam someone else’s vegetables too, and so on.

I also think more people are willing to call out toxicity nowadays, which is good. Addressing toxicity in online communities has always been a problem because so many have turned a blind-eye in the past, but there’s a lot more awareness of this issue now and people are more likely to speak up about it, rather than just blame internet culture and endure.

^^^This! I’ve seen far more toxicity on the forums than in match, even during the free weekend when people get angry about non-existent team comp.

Not 100% sure about that. A lot of the toxic behavior centers around the rather flimsy game balance the game has. The constant Nerf/Buff cycle and the fairly boring meta. The fact not every hero is “viable” burns people who are interested in a hero for personal reasons.

That so few hero’s are every “Meta” in a given season means more matches play out exactly the same if a team wants to win. Yes the community has a large part to play but the way the game plays and how issues are dealt with by Blizzard plays a large role in it’s problems.

Depends on your region aswell. Or maybe I’m super unlucky - there’s at least one toxic person in every single game no matter the gamemode on EU. Comp, QP, arcade, custom games… everywhere.

The forums are pretty much here to:

  • Remind us weekly how the game is dying
  • Advise us on which hero now needs to be nerfed
  • Advise us on what should be the next politically correct hero

So I guess if you consider that toxic, thats what you’re getting.

Noted (and yes, I read the whole thing), but I still feel its the players themselves and how they behave or react to the game.

Yeah, I have heard this, but haven’t tried other servers, so I don’t have first hand with this. I think the main problem here is that the EU has a lot of different countries, who all have different accents, and from what I have seen on youtube, sometimes its very hard to understand what they are saying, so they get mad that you can’t.

It’s on both voice comms and text chat. So it’s not really that - as I wrote even in QP/arcade people flame in every game, and in those modes it’s text chat.

It’s always personal insults based on what happens ingame, how others are playing, what they’re playing, and if the other team is getting steamrolled there’s a lot remarks beyond ‘‘ez’’. I don’t get much directed at myself but I don’t enjoy others getting harassed either so my daily report+block pile is very big.

Now yes I could hide the chat, but I’ve met some nice people aswell - as rare as it is. Also the few times people have actual nice banter is cool. And well, reporting works quite well as I see a ‘‘thank you’’ or multiple of them every time I login. Maybe some learn after enough punishments, or so I hope.

the toxicity in game is still there its just lowered a little (( im going to go on a limb and say this is becuse alot of people are chaging there toxicity over to the forums insted of in game where there not punished as harshly )) but the forums are still going strong sooo.

yeah its there

I would also say a lot of people who put out one of those “I am quitting forever threads” left OW and thus are no longer there to be toxic. They probably stick around the Forums because they want to keep up to date about the game and possibly come back later if some patch fixes something they were angry at.
