At this rate they might as well just add loot boxes alongside the battle pass because the weeklies will not help new players. They said they want to make it free to play but just ended up putting the prices on in game purchases instead. New players will have to play consistently everyday for half a year just to get a legendary skin.
I’d love to see lootboxes as rewards exactly how they were before but also have them removed from the shop. There were countries that didn’t allow those boxes because by spending money on them it was too similar to gambling.
loot boxes where always to close to gambling and several countries have taken action against that sort of thing for good cause this game is rated for teens after all.
BP is probably the more ethical choice really since it does not depend on whaling as much
Except if you look at the insane prices and the EXTREMLY low amount of in-game currency you can earn from playing Blizzard managed to make an even more unethical set-up than the loot box system. Especially with this FOMO bull-crap where the skin you might want isn’t even purchasable until it randomly shows up in the shop one day.
The difference is that on Overwatch it wasn’t problematic because there were only 4-5 seasonal events a year with 5-6 skins related to specific lootboxes and it was possible to farm coins the entire year and buy them with free coins.
Not ethical at all with current pricing and the amount of new skins that is about to get released on a weekly basis. No possibility of earning coins by playing (barely 60 coins a week and it’s not enough to buy anything but still requires a lot of hours played to get those 60 coins).
What would be unethical is having lootboxes with 2-3 skins released each week but that never happened on OW1.
No because it promotes gambling.
I don’t know where these people that defend Blizzard’s crap with OW2 come from. Must be family members of the devs/devs themselves to defend this BS.
I was kind of hoping for somthing similar to hots(heroes of the storm) guess that was just wishful thinking
Simple remove the ability to purchase lootboxes. Can only be earned by playing the game.
It’s still gambling because you don’t know what you’ll get.
It’s not gonna happen. Too many countries outlawed them as “gambling” to children.
Yeah I don’t get either how all of a sudden, lootboxes are the boogeyman when buying them didn’t give you any advantage except for the first year and half on OW (to people that didn’t play a lot).
Not buying lootboxes wasn’t a big issue. You were able to get the skins you liked nonetheless.
Oh please, that’s like saying playing Diablo 2 is gambling because you don’t know what loot you’ll get. Guess we’re going to have to ban just about every RPG ever made.
Don’t know about diablo so that’s irrelevant but yeah i guess ![]()

As opposed to FOMO system that will lead the same children to get addicted to spending money on the game, with some of them even stealing their parents’ credit cards…
I get it that gambling is an issue but on Overwatch it wasn’t how it played out with the low amount of new skins during an entire year. You could still buy those skins with free coins (you easily got by playing). Free lootboxes were easily obtainable.
What’s funny is I personally don’t support lootboxes, but Blizzard managed to make a system that’s even more BS than lootboxes with OW2. Anyone that thinks the current system is reasonable/ethical to be selling 6 year old skins for 20 bucks a pop that could have been easily obtained a month ago by just playing the game needs to get their head checked.
Whoever thought that the battle pass was going to be better for the newer players was always just plain wrong and it was very obvious. That’s why everyone bashed on these players who kept shilling for the company as they didn’t make any sense what-so-ever
The lootbox system in OW1 was hot molten magma type of fire. The best lootbox system any AAA title had ever seen as everything was reasonably grindable and it was especially nice for the newer players who would gain levels very quickly during the first 25 levels or so and even after that rather fast. If you compare how many different cosmetics you got from lootboxes after playing the game for 20 hours compared to OW2, the difference is immense. And the quality factor isn’t even there considering how lackluster the cosmetics in the battle pass are
Overall those who wanted the battle pass type of stuff in the game just shot themselves in the foot completely
its etical that its not exploting those addicted to gambling and gambling like mechanics that becomee whales but rather the battle pass is a reasonable cost spread across the whole comunity… now the monitization is not perfectly ethical i would argue locking heros behind any kind of paywall or grind is pay to win so that is an issue i have with the current system.
i never claimed it was preferct in any ay shape or form just more etical in this one sense
Lootboxes were useless and most people only bought them during the first 2 years. Plus, leveling up would offer you a lootbox for free, same with the endorsement system which was perfect.
I 100% agree. Overwatch’s coin system and BP is one of the worst I’ve ever seen… and Overwatch is not even a real F2P game in the first place so it’s even more insane.
If their goal by turning their P2P game into a F2P was to beat all the other ones in terms of lack of ethics, they successfully reached it.
I’m not saying this is better, but this is the result of the campaign against lootboxes.
