🧐 Is giving a "smart-aleck" reply being toxic?

Is it toxic to give a ā€œsmart-aleckā€ reply to an overly aggressive toxic teammate?

Here is what happened:

I was in voice chat with team as I do normally. Listening to the team and others to fill, I selected my hero 4th. Then with seconds before the match was about to start, the other 2 players locked in their heroes and the match begun. But while these 2 players were selecting, the other teammates were suggesting what we need / they want. There was some confusion or miscommunication, and we left the spawn with 3 dps, 2 tank, and 1 healers.

It was whatever, and could easily be fixed. And since I was one of the first to die and willing to swap, I swapped from DPS to healer. About 30 seconds later, one teammate gets really upset and frustrated at me, and I’m just like ā€œI’m just doing what was asked right before the game startedā€. He continues to badger me about it. So, when I then died again, I said ā€œI’m swapping again, but don’t ask me to swap anymoreā€ and I left the team voice channel (I was frustrated and upset with this guy’s demeanor and it wasn’t helping listening)

We end up winning the game, but right before the game finishes, he types in text:

ToxicTeammate:
ā€œso REX, did you have someone $#*! your face this morning?ā€

Me: ?
(since I honestly did not hear anything from this guy or anyone all game since left I the voice channel first round and I thought there wasn’t any problem between us anymore or at all)

ToxicTeammate: I was wondering if you had someone take a @#$^ on your face this morning?

Me (w/ smart-aleck reply): Why? Are you looking for a referral?

ToxicTeammate: Yeah it sounded like you had someone @#$% on your face this morning when you spoke

Me: I didn’t know you were acute with what people sound like after they’ve had their face @#$%'ed on

I would personally say you shouldn’t be suspended. But that’s just me. I guess ā€œtwo wrongs don’t make a rightā€.

I would hope that Blizz would be consistent and punish you both though.

The enterprise we don’t speak of is the real snowflake, so, my suggestion, use only autorized insults and comebacks, example:

  • You fight like a Dairy Farmer!

  • How appropriate! You fight like a cow!

  • I’ve spoken with apes more polite than you!

  • I’m glad to hear you attended your family reunion!

Further than this you’ll be will be hunted down and defeated due to the order 66.

Well, it’s against their rules to swear on the forums so…

I’ve been silenced for asking in all chat ā€œso which sombra did you guys think was more useless last round?ā€

You can be silenced for using sarcasm.

I was recently suspended and it said in one of the things

Using sarcasm

I kid you not.

how DARE you respond with something that requires brain cells to understand instead of just SCREAMING at them and calling them INSULTS
REALLY?
right in front of MY SALAD?
for SHAME, Rex, FOR SHAME.

The world is not ok with sarcasm because usually they dont get it and what do people do when they dont understand something and it is used against them?
You also have to remember blizz created a safe space for the sensitives so they will band together and scream toxic over logic.

But dont be sad atleast you have a better grasp on reality and can defend yourself in a witty way.

Im really glad ps4 doesnt have a text chat bc i would do crap like this all the time if it did xD

You should receive about 100 reports to get suspended.
I don’t think one game is enough for that.

One report from one toxic person doesn’t get you silenced. Just sayin, you’ve been annoying people in the past enough to accumulate enough abusive chat reports to warrant a silence.

I think sarcasm is totally fine. It’s great to be the one delivering and the one witnessing a toxic person being shut down by sarcasm. But, sarcasm can quickly devolve into toxicity and is often used by toxic players/trolls so it’s best to not use sarcasm, and even better to not engage with these people at all. If you get a kick out of burning trolls, there are a lot of different places on the internet you can get away with the toxicity. But the dev team have very clearly said they don’t want toxicity in their game, and it might just be me but I’d rather not have to witness two trolls going at it and deflecting accusations by saying ā€œit’s just sarcasmā€.

So, just mute them and move on?

I got banned for saying people are snowflakes (reffering to no one in particular). Incoming silence for you and me pal.

I’ve played over 500 this season alone on my main account that got suspended

To pretty much everyone in this thread: you don’t get banned for saying something ā€œbadā€ once. You get banned after a lot of people have reported you. Just because the suspension happens after saying X, doesn’t mean X is the one thing that got you banned.

I’ve reported people for straight up typing out the n- or f-word several times, and never received a message afterwards (when I did get it at other times). You can be toxic as hell if you’re ā€œsmartā€ about it. You shouldn’t be, but you can.

Chances are, a lot of you simply don’t recognize your own toxicity for what it is. Try to learn from the experience instead of insisting that Blizzard or the player base are ā€œsnowflakesā€ etc.

As a dairy farmer I’m confused as to how that’s an insult. If you really believe it’s an insult then I’m going to have to ask you to step into my pasture so that we can straighten you out
