Is Elo Hell Real?

Does anyone else think elo hell exist? So many top rank players don’t think it exist they basically just blames it on the persons skill. Like “Your Overwatch” video over the truth of elo hell (please note I’m not trying to give any hate to the channel and the people that work hard to make the videos) they basically just say you need to get better but they are looking through the eyes of players who are already super skilled also those who have a bit of a god complex and think they deserve to be in top 500. Top players who do the challenge of bronze to masters don’t get stuck in elo hell because the skill gap is so vastly different, even if there’s someone throwing the top player carry’s the game so heavily. Most players however aren’t that skilled and when we say we are stuck in elo hell we aren’t saying “omg I’m a god player I deserver to be in diamond but I’m stuck in silver wtf”. We are saying for every lets say 1 good game with a team that actually tries to win we get stuck with like 5 games with teams that don’t try to win. And because we aren’t actual top 500 players in a like a bronze match we can’t do enough to carry those matches. Low rank matches are very unmotivating if you will, there are very rare few matches that are actually fun even if you lose because both sides work hard to win. Practically every match you are either steam rolling the other team or getting steam rolled over. It’s really difficult to get better when you can’t be in a match where everyone strives to win and actually tries.

ELO hell exists in that it’s easy to be hard stuck when you can’t identify the reasons you are not progressing. It also exists in the sense that you will eventually hit your high point where you literally are incapable of improving anymore.

However, if you are actually mechanically skilled you can force yourself out of the low ranks on pure mechanical skill and make it probably as far as Diamond before you actually have to learn the nuance of the game to get higher.

I suggest working on your mechanics first - always hit your shots and abilities. Then work on your positioning - never die because you were in the wrong position. Be ultra-disciplined in these areas - even when it doesn’t make sense according to the state of the game. Never be the guy who misses their shots or gets caught out of position and you will get out of ELO hell.

Not really, I joke about it being real only for Mid-High Masters, but it’s really not true period. If you actually deserve a higher rank, you’ll get there. Thinking they deserve a higher rank is the biggest reason people actually don’t climb: They feel infallible, or think their mistakes don’t ultimately add up to the catastrophic sadness of seeing Defeat splash on their screen as they start immediately thinking about everything their team did wrong instead of having any modicum of self-reflection. Barring straight up throwers, losing is a team effort, just like winning.

Basically, most people are exactly where they belong. Whether they like it or not.

Elo hell is real if you let it be real in your mind. When you blame a non existent boogie man for you not ranking up then you are less likely to work towards getting out of your rank.

Yes its real. This game has no working matchmaking. There is players of all skill levels in all ranks.

Sometimes you can carry, sometimes its not enough. All depending on your teammates. Who could be on your skill level, better, or new to the game. Enemy team has the same variables and could be a stack.

Too many variables that you have no control over.

Did bronze to GM in ow1 btw.

You will eventually climb to the rank you belong. The further away that is from your current rank, the faster the climb will be and vice versa. The point of confusion is that the person either thinks they belong higher than they actually do, or they simply haven’t played enough games yet to get there.

ELO Hell is about the grind-to-climb ratio not being hard-stuck. If you’re hard-stuck in a given rank it’s because you belong there. On the other hand it is possible that you generally do out-play people in your rank but the difference is simply marginal enough that ranking up would take a major grind. Not impossible just discouraging enough that people can, and do give up.
