Is DDOS ing a thing in overwatch?

i saw a thread on twitter : I am so sick of getting dossed in the middle of a comp game

It’s so frustrating. If you’re that trash that you need to ddos someone then don’t play competitive."""

is this actualyl a thing? that would explain why i randomyl have issues when i wasnt before, and when multiple ppl drop out of the match suddenly for no apparent reason

I have no answer for your question - but Overwatch itself has some of the worst connection issues imo.

hacks will anyways be improved and used it is very possible

(the servers are pretty bad too tho) insert emmong dcing from the server 3 times

There’s times where my connection is 100% fine, music playing, no ping increase, no packet loss, no one teleporting, etc…

Suddenly I see the exclamation mark icon on the left of my screen and am guaranteed to DC the next 5 seconds, being able to rejoin immediately after.

DDOS would actually affect your connection enough for ping spikes, but I genuinely believe there’s a DC hack, yea.

It’s happened to me quite a few times and ALWAYS during a super crucial moment, every single time.

It CAN happen. I’ve HAD it happen. If it DOES happen and it is apparent that it came through someone acting upon their firewall, be certain to NOTIFY staff through their customer support portal.

It requires some digging and usually their automated system does a TERRIBLE job at catching it. I really think they need to get stuff so PLAYERS can submit stuff to their “NOC” offices there in IRVINE, since there are some things that COULD have been prevented in the past.

Generally speaking, no.

DDOS requires you to know the IP address of the player you want to disconnect from the game, and Overwatch is a client-server architecture, where you can’t normally get the IP addresses of the other players.

There are ways, like convincing someone to join your discord, but it generally requires something like that.

This is true on PC. I’ve heard it’s more possible on console due to the way things like voice chat are handled, but I don’t know. Certainly it is not as possible or common as in games like CoD or Destiny 2 that have peer-to-peer architectures; in those games you can always see the IP addresses of the other players, so it’s easy to do.

With Overwatch alone, a person cannot be individually subjected to a DDoS attack unless the attacker obtains the IP address of that user through a means outside of Overwatch. The only gaming platform where this is a problem is currently Xbox One. If you accept a party chat invitation from a stranger, they can access your IP address which then can be used to be “nuked” in a game of Overwatch. To work around this, you need to change your IP address and avoid party chat invites. Please note, there is no such problems with the PlayStation platform, nor PC.

Any other complains of getting “DDoS” are unfounded and is more likely a technical connection issue between that user and the game server.

I’d like you to read my post above and tell me that’s something that doesn’t exist (outside of DDoS).

It’s something that’s happened to me quite a few times, and not just to me, but my friends too.

If a hacker DDOS you through overwatch then it must be a skilled hacker with private exploits. I wouldn’t say it’s impossible as i’ve seen exploits in other online games that the hacker was able to grab players IP. After seeing too much weird stuff from hackers like spawning items that shouldn’t be possible or crashing users on purpose. I’d say possible but only through a very skilled hacker. Not those average joe that only pay $20 for those hacks.

It’s a very big thing on Xbox I hear

Ya’ll haven’t played on crap connections before. If you want bad lag and stuff go play Nintendo Brawl. You have a bad connection with someone the whole game lags down to 2FPS.

Overwatch is perfectly fine in comparison. No need to be overdramatic.

no the servers are really bad.

i remember if too many things happen too fast the servers would legit crash aka everyone using ults.

12 ults = server crash, good times.

Yes

As of this point, if you play a MP game, you’ll have to expect a DDOS or any form of cheating.

DDOS is more likely to happen on consoles though, and people have somehow figured out ways to extract the IP to DDOS a specific person instead of just the server there.

On PC? It is usually the game server that got hit, and more often than not, it will be announced on Twitter by Blizzard CS that there is a DDOS attack happening.

Ive seen multpile ppl go down at the same time who werent in a stack before but i also hear that ow servers are pretty bad

It seems to be a problem on console systems more than PC. I think there are ways people can get your home IP on consoles.

Ok you seriously have to stop with the copy pasta. I’ve literally been on someone’s OW stream, had people come into their chat and SAY they were going to DDOS and then proceed to do so. Sorry, you don’t get to dig your head in the sand about this one.

I guess nowadays yes.
I remember like 10 years ago when I’d play free fps games, sometimes people would threaten with DDoS, I’ve been DDoS’d for a whole week straight once, was kinda miserable. Not that that kinda thing happens anymore tho, esp with today’s internet speeds.

Script kiddies to the max.

I did. I think you don’t understand that a connection to any given internet service isn’t just a straight path from point A to point B. Anyone out there can lose a connection with a internet service (such as the Overwatch game server), but not necessarily lose connection to their overall connection. Reasons for this can be a broad scoped DDoS attacking an internet hub or network provider (and not a specific person), high internet traffic (something that is happening a lot more now due to the pandemic), or some computer, router, hub that connects between you and said service has some sort of routing or hardware issue.

What I am getting at is that no one can specifically target an individual user without getting information about that user, which is the IP address of that user. The only IP address we have access to in Overwatch is the game server itself (press Ctrl+Shift+N), and the game server itself will be protected by a series of DDoS mitigation that make it nearly impossible to do unless you launch a multi-pronged attack, which does happen sometimes, but when it does it affects everyone (across multiple games/matches) and everyone including Blizzard will notice (oh and doing so is extremely illegal to do).
