Is 5v5 a mistake?

They couldnt balance 6v6 normally, so they needed to add role queue. They couldnt balance role queue and now they are trying 5v5.

Out of everything we know, is 5v5 gonna end up the same and just become another mistake?

Nah 5v5 is great cause it is making me embrace my inner DPS role and after all these years of playing ana/baptiste then switching over to soldier/ashe/cowboy I get to destroy people easily without ever having to worry about healing my team.

5v5 kills the tank role, so yes

Pointless change that doesn’t solve anything and is only going to create new problems… like the rest of the balancing so far.

Yup.

And just like Role queue it will ultimately do nothing to solve the real issues in the game.

I think 5v5 will be easier to balance & better to play.

The game currently revolves way too heavily around tank synergy which makes them difficult to balance & having 2 tanks in general creates issues because they aren’t usually on the same page until higher ranks (and even then it’s hit or miss)

Personally I’m really looking forward to tanking in OW2. All eyes will be on me as I outplay the enemy tank :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: It’ll be way more obvious who the better tank is with only 1 on each team

Nothing will change.

The core problem is rock-paper-scissor balancing. Some heroes are so strong that require hard countering. Hard countering doesnt lead to fun and balanced games, only to total lack of balance and frustration.

I really don’t think there’s anything the devs could ever do to get enough tanks. Even if they made ten more tanks, people rather just shoot things (also let’s be real, DPS are always the coolest heroes anyway…).

Don’t need as many tanks if you require half as many  Personally I find tanking really fun. It’s a very different playstyle to support/DPS. You’re the big beefy space taker instead of the fragile damage dealer or enabler

The 2-2-2 failed because it didn’t really think about re-writing the previous heroes who were born for a freer system. But honestly I think many forget that support and tank spam to win easy we always risked in Overwatch when new tanks and supports arrived, even from Ana 1.0 the quad-tank. The 2-2-2 was a right thought, but also extremely wrong to underestimate the variety: not providing the right fun to a category is the same as killing it, and this can only get worse when you see other additional dps (especially the defender class and Symmetra as an extra).

We have no guarantee that OW2 will perform better or worse, but it has a much bigger advantage: it has decided to really adapt the heroes to the new system. This reworking is scary, but it is inadmissible to pretend that the same original rules could coexist on a completely different system, and the fact that the 2-2-2 was introduced without significant rework is a pretty telling example.

What really worries me, if anything, is that they absolutely want to start OWL 2022 by speeding up the ā€œOW2 previewā€ program. For me that’s a mistake of wanting to start the car without having enough fuel. And even worse, a show without the game. I do not wish for failure, but this attachment to the e-sports plan is quite open to criticism without admitting that ā€œyou are not preparedā€ (said a certain night elf of a fairly famous blizzard game, if anyone gets the quote.)

Chonk… you sound scary as hell to fight :joy:
But you are right after all, you’re gonna get massive value after playing all those years on ana/bap. Most DPS mains are used to having easier kills, but since it’s much harder to kill someone on bap/ana, transferring over to say… soldier is gonna make killing feel like a breeze!

I have actually been doing soldier ā€˜one tricking’ this season and made it to my support rating faster than it ever took to get my support rating to where it is at. Then I don’t understand at all why DPS mains complain so much about certain things lol.

It’s shortsighted. The amount of depth and individuality the game has is going to plummet with one tank. It’s not necessarily going to fix queue times unless they do something to draw in more support players.

It’s going to require reworks of almost the entire roster and delay the release significantly when the development team is already seeking ambitious goals such as a new engine, an entire PvE talent system for every hero, a weather system, new heroes, new maps, better AI, and et cetera. We’re already seeing the developers get rushed into releasing a rushed version of the product because of this.

The reasons go on, but ultimately it doesn’t matter. They’re locked in at this point and we might as well give it a try since it’s free. As to whether or not we quit or not, that remains to be seen.

Cutting a tank keeps the role from being OP since it’s usually the synergy between tanks that makes them obnoxious. Rather than the tank’s individual power level. That’s why they keep getting nerfs.

This allows tanks to have slightly more individual power and allow them to be more fun without ruining the meta. So I think it’s a good call.

i do not think its about the balancing of 6v6 role queue. i think its because they realize no one likes long queues and even with their bandaid fix (priority passes) the tank base is still shrinking. so their idea was to have 1 tank for ow2. lets see if that works tho

everyone says ā€œgo play tankā€ if you dont like long queues but no one wants to play tank. its doomed to always be an unpopular role. it just the way it is. its a culture thing lol?

The masses haven’t even played it yet to know

You think there won’t be synergy between tanks and other heroes (or other heroes in general)?

Take the best possible combo away and the next one becomes the best.

It is

Devs never actually addressed the core problem but symptoms. 90% of the changes only harmed game and some of them throwed it into coma.

Removing tank → why ? → because they are unfun → why ? → because they die too fast → why? → because there is too much damage → why there is so much damage ? → because of new support design with high burst / Aoe healing → what’s the reason ? → Ana’s design

There are many of these " core reason - symptom " but none of these were addressed properly. Like 90% of problems we have now could have never existed if Ana was redesigned immediately and Tracer was nerfed.

Cycle repeats

Devs keep making mistakes and keep ignore it. There 100% will be new limitation / game rework after 5v5 because of ā€œunsolvableā€ problems.

I’m honestly not sure if it’s a mistake or not. Time will tell. It’s definitely a redefining change though.

balance will be bad as now… unless they change approach
because currently changes not systematic, not frequent enough and sometimes devastatingly big
also balance changes should never be (un)fun driven
