So, I recently moved to a place with internet that is spotty on the best of days. I still try to play overwatch because I enjoy stadium, but with spotty internet my connection gets lost at random times. It will go out completely sometimes for a few seconds and sometimes for a few minutes. Each time it does I always get disconnected from the app. I have a hotspot on my phone for when this happens to allow me to hop back into a match when i inevitably disconnect. This works when I am mid match, but not at the start of the match. If my internet bugs out while the match has just started, I am screwed. I do not get a chance to reconnect. I do not get any time turn on my hotspot. I do not even have time to log back into the game, which is very annoying by the way, especially when I am already dealing with internet issues and a suspension for a problem I did not cause and cannot fix. I just loaded into a match today with my buddy. It was his first match of stadium. I select my hero and then the red symbol of doom, aka connection issues symbol, plagues my screen. I instantly reach for my phone and turn on my hotspot, and switch my internet over to it, this takes less than 10 seconds, I re-login to the game and click reconnect. The whole process took less than 20 seconds, but I am too late. Now I have an 8 hour suspension for something I could not control, especially when I was trying to reconnect. Please can we fix this issue. I should have time to get back into the match before it gets cancelled. It is not like I’m doing this on purpose. No I am not going to not play the game because I have bad internet, and no I am not going to listen to comments that do not care to read my post and just want to feel like they are right on the internet. I posted this in the hopes that a Dev might see it and help me out, or at least address this issue. I understand that this system is in place to alleviate the leavers issue the game has, but there should be more wiggle room to avoid getting penalized for people who are not actually leaving but are in a similar situation to my own.
A stable internet connection is a system requirement for this game.
I will admit I may be wrong about many things.
So you would support forgiveness as long as someone rejoined the game they just left and would be OK with the game prioritizing returning you to the game you disconnected from?
Keep in mind there there are a LOT of people who leave games, don’t care about penalties and do not wish to immediately rejoin their left game if they requeue.
Maybe a button to rejoin if you lose connection for whatever reason?
then again it would have to hold your spot, causing situations in which people would disconnect, not rejoin but leave their team down a member for however long that grace period is.
I mean…I have to ask, why don’t you just use your hotspot BEFORE the game starts?
My internet is better when it works, thats why. My hotspot is more stable with higher ping
There is a rejoin match button that shows up on the main menu if you get kicked or dropped before the match is over and the rejoin process is extremely fast.
You are stuck with a terrible connection. That is the problem for you, which unfortunately you are knowingly bringing to the match with you, which then makes it everyone else’s problem.
“Where’s Genji?”
“Oh, he’s running in place over there next to that statue. It’s cool, just don’t die in this 4v5 for the next 45 seconds while he reconnects and also please be patient while he runs back over from spawn.”
“Also it’d be really cool if you didn’t kill him, he disconnected and that’s just unfair farming cuz he can’t defend himself.”
“…better yet can everyone stop for a few? He has to turn on his hotspot and the battery died and he has to find the charger cuz someone borrowed it.”
“Ok sooooo awkward, the hotspot won’t turn on unless the thing has more than 20% charge, just hang in there everyone!!”
I think the main difference here to keep in mind is that this is ranked where there are crucial game moments and even though the time it takes you to reconnect is under a minute it’s enough to be really disruptive, especially if it happens several times in a match. I had a tank that rejoined my game probably six different times, lagging out in spawn most of the time. Quick play format as well as the upcoming quick play for stadium may be more forgiving for your situation, potentially.
Ranked just isn’t a possibility for you right now because your internet connection is going to hold you back and it’s not right that it could potentially hold others back too if it were to allow you to continue.
This post in its entitely is a huge “I am not the problem, even tho i created the problem”.
You are suepended, good.
You could get a better internet, which any game such as this required, so you could control this.
The issue got fixed with the 8hour ban, its fixed at least for 8 hours.
I am amazed you even have the audacity to think the game is at fault for this, and not you.
Even tho you clearly state your internet is an issue and are well aware of it.
Its also there to ensure a game is balanced - if people leave, the leaver side is ensured to lose unless a miracle happens.
When you leave these games, your 4 others on team have a terrible time.
Its about time to learn not to make things only for your own self needs.
as compelling as your argument is, it is not what im talking about, nor is it what im arguing. I am talking about adding a feature to give grace to people who dc at the beginning of the match, not whether i should play with my internet. I stated in my post that i do not care what you think as it relates to whether i should play with my bad internet. I just do not care about your opinion on that matter. If that is all you want to talk about, that is fine, but talk about it elsewhere or make your own post on your own forum about it. ![]()
To reply to Sawada:
Again, I do not care about your opinions on my internet, and the claims you are making are taking a lot of leaps of logic in assuming that I do have control over my internet at this point in time. Spoiler alert, I do not have control over it, as butt hurt and mad as you wanna be about leavers, I do not leave matches purposely. Also, internet quality is often decided by geographical features, infrastructure features, and the service provider themselves. I would also like to point out that there are many areas of America where you can’t switch service providers to get better internet because there is only one available to you. You have no idea what my personal circumstances are, and are just using your own personal biases and projecting your issues onto me. Your last point also makes no sense because I am not a leaver, I dc’d and was trying to join back, I am just getting blank penalized for a bigger issue where people intentionally leave matches they do not want to play. My internet is also usually fine and works well, it just randomly stutters and I get kicked out of the game, which also only happens in overwatch. This issues is not as bad in other games where this stutter only lags the game temporarily. Did you stop to think that maybe this might be a network code on the game’s side? No you probably did not because you came here to rant about leavers and feel justified about it, not actually discuss my issue.
Your answer is there.
The player adapts to the game, not the other way around.
Also:
Yep, its on the TOU.
Your point here is? Or are you just making an “aha” statement like it means anything?
You are not getting the point? Heres a breakdown:
“there should be more wiggle room to avoid getting penalized for people who are not actually leaving but are in a similar situation to my own.”
Penalties are not applied for the cause of the leaving, but for the leaving itself, so that request is pointless.
Second:
That means you have to do whatever is possible to accommodate the game and obey the rules / stay within the lanes of the TOU.
Its on you.
If you dont have a stable, low ping connection, you will have to choose the lesser of 2 evils, and that is the stable one with higher ping. Refusing to do so will work against you and no, the game is not changing.
Thats the point.
It is not a pointless request, and pointing out an obvious fact does not make it pointless either. No duh the penalty is given for leaving, I never argued against that. I suggested their should be wiggle room for people who cannot get better internet but want to play regardless. You act like those people do not deserve to play the game.
And, while I agree that I should play on my hotspot instead of relying on spotty internet. Playing on my hotspot is just a band aid and not an actual solution.
Also, the game changes all the time, that is the point of the forums and the point of the devs responding to forum posts.
So again I ask, what is your point, but that is a rhetorical question. If you cannot understand what that is let me break it down for you:
Google defines a rhetorical question as, “a question asked in order to create a dramatic effect or to make a point rather than get an answer.”
But thanks for the pointless reply bud
Don’t play a competitive mode if you don’t have the gear.
This sounds harsh, but it’s the reality
It is not harsh, its just the “duh” obvious response people who don’t care but want to sound like they are making a good point make.
I get that I can’t do anything about it, and I get this is pointless.
I made the post “hoping” to get a response from a dev. Hope being the key word.
Also the game mode is only competitive, so the “duh” statement you made has a really debatable argument.
So many would argue it is not harsh nor is it reality
Its not a pointless reply, you are just mad that is not what you wanted to get. Grow up.
Literally everyone here is telling you how it is and :
That is true, but the trend around leaving and leaving penalties are only getting harsher, that is the trend. They are not going to go back on that but hey, if you think they might, good luck with that.
I never said that, but you act like the game and everyone else should accommodate your situation and not the other way around.
Competitive is really insanely ROUGH when you are in a team that has 1 leaver, even if that leaver is only out for 1 minute. It literally can destroy the entire match and you seem to be oblivious to this fact just because it suits you.
The condescending tone “explaining” things was cringe, because here, you are the one that seems to not be getting it but hey, some people like ice skating uphill I guess. You do you, bud.
![]()
No, you don’t seem to get it, I was being purposely being condescending to people who purposely want to talk about nothing and act like they are saying something, aka you.
I am only replying to you to gain traction on the post, not because I care about your pointless response, bud.
Its just funny that you make the classic forum scroller response ![]()
Thanks for confirming it.
Like I said, good luck Ice skating uphill. Thread muted.
Your personal issues with internet are not your teams issues. I can’t see any reason for threads like this to exist in the first place
preach to the choir bud, nice regurgitating new information
You admitted yourself you have poor internet connection. Nothing can be added to this. Period
The core issue is that their is no good custom tailored solution that works for your case and is not abusable or cause massive disruption
