Integrity question - will this overlay get players banned?

similar to Dll injection into Overwatch.exe

hello,

i’m working on a cross-game crosshair overlay app (that’s it) via an in-game overlay similar to Steam, Overwolf and Discord.

i’m worried that this overlay may trigger anti-cheat because similarly to discord it would try hooking into overwatch’s dx11 process via .dll injection. i’m not sure if there is some whitelist for discord and other trusted overlays that it would trip so i want to be cautious as to not get honest players banned

this would not be using a third-party injector and would simply hook via code similarly to

no accessing memory, 100% simple draw operations

it’s clear to me that overlays are allowed (steam, discord, overwolf) but i wanted to ask just in case this would cause problems

best regards

Tech Support is unlikely to be able to provide you that answer. The general rule is: if you have to ask yourself if it’s allowed, then it’s best to avoid. Personally, I think this would be a direct violation of the game rules, as no addons are permitted. The apps you’re comparing to offer PC stats, chat notifications, and recording of gameplay, not something to help with aim.

okay, thanks for the reply!

kindly as it does not create an unfair advantage that exceeds any gains from standard upgrades to hardware such as monitors and mice i will continue cautiously

this reasoning comes from the fact that monitors such as ASUS PG278QR include the exact same functionality on a hardware level (OSD crosshair) as my proposition and this software already exists within allowed overlays such as overwolf

thanks again, i understand this is a complicated issue with intentional vagueness

You mentioned it would put an overlay on the screen, that’s an unfair advantage.

Overwolf causes the game to crash pretty often, as I believe it triggers anti-cheat.

edit: i’m not allowed to include links in my post, just posted searchable titles instead

i don’t mean to be combative but this is becoming common functionality on gaming monitors (crosshair overlay) via hardware OSD - are these monitors’ also unfair? the only perceivable difference would be implementation and detectability.

vendor examples

i do acknowledge the gray area but it doesn’t really trigger my common sense threshold of cheating since it’s further down the competitive advantage scale against 60 vs 400 hz monitors (anecdotally)

to be blunt i’m less concerned with ethics and more concerned with automatic action against players. hopefully worst case is simply a closed client but i’d hate to be responsible for unexpected daemon bans against honest players. i was hoping to determine if i would be jeopardizing player’s accounts with this software (potentially via private confirmation) but i do understand why public developer disclosure of anti-cheat is uncommon

i’m quite invested in competitive myself so i may personally take to the piece of paper taped to the monitor approach e.e

i appreciate your responses though and do value discussion about this :]
if there is no hard determination / correspondence on this i will pursue cautiously
