Recently started getting random ping spikes. Yesterday, the second or so game I played started fine, then suddenly started getting 900 ping. It would bounce up and down between 200 and 800 for a bit, then disconnect. The high ping I saw was like 2100.
I tried again today in training mode and one match, and it starts out with normal ping, then soon starts to go up. Highest today was about 400. I wasn’t disconnected, but I did have a ton of rubber banding.
When reconnecting to game, it would show that I was searching for a game. I load into a game and almost immediately disconnect. I restart computer and try to load into training room. Character select screen doesn’t load correct (character missing, screen goes dark) then it boots me and says it’s loading in again, but does not actually load back into character select or map. The menus after these disconnected will be glitched like they are looking for a lobby, but I can’t do anything else.
Sometimes when time this happens, my wi-fi kinda freaks out. My background stuff usually continues to run; sometimes it would stop altogether.
This has happened once before when I booted up PC and started with overwatch soon after building it. That time I just factory reset the computer and re-installed drivers individually because the game would run fine on my laptop, but not my brand new PC (after previously working fine on the new machine!)
I don’t want the solution to have to be “factory reset computer and reinstall all drivers” each time I have this issue.
Whenever I try to file a ticket, it says there was an error and to try again later.
Pinging [ip] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from [ip]: bytes=32 time=4ms TTL=64
Reply from [ip]: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from [ip]: bytes=32 time=6ms TTL=64

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 6ms, Average = 3ms
I didn’t know if it was bad to publicly show my ip so I just replaced them, but this was the result.
My internet works fine for literally everything else.
6ms ping to your home equipment isn’t ideal. The test is also only a few seconds long. You’d want to run a much longer one with the WinMTR client instead of cmd prompt.
Your average should be 0ms, your worst should be 3ms, especially since it’s equipment in your home. Reboot everything, maybe call the ISP to ask them to check it out.
I recently rebooted everything through the app and unplugged the equipment but I’ll try again and give my isp a call. Thanks, I’ll update whether I’m successful or not
Edit
I tried researching to see what routers would be good but got overwhelmed. I asked for suggestions on a pc builder discord but did not get any responses.
Do you have any suggestions on routers?
Depends on what type of internet connection you have (Cable, DSL, Fibre, etc) and it also depends on what your needs are.
6ms to your router indicates you could be on WiFi? Have you tried a cable? WiFi is generally terribly unreliable unless you have an excellent WiFi system.
Honestly, I think as Nicole suggested your best bet is going to be to call your ISP, they can probably recommend you something that’s compatible with your connection as well as something they support, and meets your needs.
I ended up buying a new router. Thankfully they price matched it. Wifi is the only thing I can use at the moment. I guess I could have a cable from the living room to my room, but I don’t really like the look of that. My apartment does have ethernet connections, but when they installed my internet initially, they said they weren’t connected and I don’t want to pay for any installation stuff.
