Information about the Global Play server selection

I’m US East, I was playing with a British friend of mine who likes to play in NA and has selected Americas in the Battle.net client. Today, the game was putting us in EU matches.

I have done that and still puts me in the MES1 servers. Heck it happens in matches as well. Granted it gives me low ping, but that is not the region I intend to play in. I intend to play in Singapore in Americas region, not in EU region, even though I have selected Americas in Bnet client.

I still did not get a chance to test it all since I cannot log into the game at all. It says failed connection, retrying.

Is some maintenance going on?

I’m literally never getting games on my local server anymore (Aussie here) I’m being put into SEA lobbies 100% of the time, because AU servers are smaller, so I’m literally just on double to triple the ping all the time

AKA, “Our player base is shrinking so we’re going to connect everybody no matter where they are and disregard latency issues.”

Yeah that should save the player base. :+1:

I use to select Asia Server and play on GTK1 - Japan server before the crossplay update. Please bring back the option to select server. This update might the reason why I quit overwatch. I play on Asia GTK1 server for a reason because I like the people there but now I am forced to play on Singapore servers.

Why doesn’t it show the BLIZZ icon besides the topic in the menu even though you work for Blizzard

Because he doesn’t. He is a forum MVP who does literally all the work someone from Blizzard should do in terms of communication with the community about issues, collecting information on said issues, and forwarding it to the people who can do something about it, but he is not working for Blizzard.

Your example is normal and intended. What region you select in BattleNet app launcher no longer matters and the matchmaker will decide the best possible latency based on the group.

Okay yeah, you are going to get the MES1 servers if they are lower latency now with the changes involving Global Play. What region you select in BattleNet app launcher no longer matters in terms of what server you are assigned to.

I would like to report being forced on to the toxic EU region when I used to love meeting new US people and I have met alot of new US people, is not good, either no one talks on EU or toxic or the language barrier gets in the way, we should still be able to select Americas instead of EU, please correct your error and allow us to select Amercias again.
many many people have been upset by this.

As I am not able to play in the region I want, this belongs here.

Thankyou

id make a list but it would be silly…

ive played probably 5-6 hours now since patch and every single game has been US central one

I usually launch the game NA to connect to South East Asia servers (SEA), which was named pse1, now named gsg1. However, after the update, I’ve been pulled to Japanese(gtk1), Korean(icn1), Taiwanese(tpe1) servers. Not only do I have a higher ping than normal, but I’m also not able to communicate with any teammates. Please revote this change. It is an unnecessary change, please do not make it live.

I used to play in Singapore server but now I’m forced to be pulled to Taiwan server. That’s a really nightmare for me as it’s hard for me to communicate with others in games, which also brings me bad gameplay experiences…Pls do consider changing it back. Players should have the right to choose the area where they can have fun…

I dont see the benefit here, can someone explain? If u want to have low ping, choose the server thats closest, i dont mind having little higher ping as long as i can comminicate with ppl. I live in europe and truth be told, even in comp, ppl dont communicate, dont conduct any startegies, ure lucky if half your team speaks english. If u care about teamwork being forced into EU servers is hell. Since morning i havent noticed any imprevements in queue time either, so what is the actual benefit here?
If im being honest the game right now is unplayable for me.
Why not enable to possibility to manually switch? i dont get it

Hello,

I would like you to observe the consensus of the masses. You are working towards improving queue times, and that’s great, but it is evident that this is not the way to do it. Ultimately, players care more about their in game experience rather than their experience between games. I understand this was an intentional move by Blizzard, and quite frankly, I do not see the benefits to it. Queue times are manageable, and I would disqualify them from being anywhere near the top of the priority list when it comes to potential improvements Overwatch could make!

Playing with absurdly high ping, especially unanticipated, elevates the level of anxiety players have moving forward. They’ll dread playing the game in fear of being put in a game in servers across the world, where they’ll feel what they do is futile and be discouraged from launching the game further and further. Your intentions were clear, but unfortunately, the execution is counterintuitive.

Can you at least make preference, like if you pick a server in battle.net, you will be able to solo play there, and if you play in a group, it will automatically connect you to the best one.

This global play is appalling, forcing us to play somewhere we don’t wanna be. I take the supposed longer queue times (which are still the same) then being forced to play somewhere i don’t wanna be.

Tldr blizzard hates doom mains

This behavior is honestly not great. I intentionally switch to the US servers late at night because the matches there are more fun at that time. Now i am always forced on EU servers.

Could we get an option to get the old behavior back?

I just had small chat with friends who also live in EU but play on NA. Their reasons in addition to mine above:

  1. people actually talk in those games and talk in English.
  2. some even play comp exclusively on NA for that very reason.

Hold up, I’ve been wondering why only in this game I had higher ping for ages, why is there not an Eastern server at all. So being in Eastern Canada, I’m being rerouted to a Central server, wtf is this.

Literally every other games that isn’t overwatch I could get into a server either on Montreal, Toronto, New York or that kind of neighborhood.
