Correct, the Chicago server is ideally located to pretty well cover all of North America that is east of the Continental Divide. Most users have less than 80 milliseconds to this server, many average 50 milliseconds.
Not in Sao Paulo anymore?
I might have to look it up, you are probably right. That being said, that city is not terribly far off from Rio in terms of geographical location (less than 450 kilometers).
Geographically theyāre close indeed, but Rioās IT infrastructure can be famously unreliable. Itās an unexpected change, is all.
Iām in Trinidad W.I. playing with a friend in Tokyo. We normally play on the NA servers. Itās been putting us into gtk1(Tokyo) since cross play started. We both speak primarily English so now we canāt communicate with half our team. We canāt get into any arcade games 'cause the queue time is over 20 mins, regular qp is over 10 mins when it used to be 2mins at the most. My ping is over 250ms. Unless we can reliably get into the NA servers again weāre just not gonna play OW. Weāll find something else.
Iām on EU server.
Iām getting matched against Asian / korean players, and my ping is 350 on average. I canāt play like that. The selected region is EU so WHY Iām getting matched to others region, this is stupid.
How can I fix this issue.
Thank you.
I have āamericasā selected at b-net launcherā¦ I usually get 40-50 ping games on Singaporean servers with decent dps q timesā¦
Now everything else being the same I am getting put into 120+ms ping middle eastern servers with God aweful dps q timesā¦ Tried the ip block method but b-net failed to loginā¦ Tried vpn but made the latency even worseā¦
Uninstalled out of frustration until the next patch/fix/updateā¦
Each and every game that Iām doing since this update.
In my case the server hopping seems to be more or less non existent.
From past 40 games (mainly played between 07:00-12:00 cest to test low player count times) itās been roughly 90% Amsterdam, 10% Versailles and one single game that put me on Chicago server. Itās noteworthy to say that there were at least 3 other players from EU on that game.
Every.Single.Time since the new update rolled out.
Iām from South East Asia server, queue EU, and always end up back in SEA to deal with a large pool of hackers. This game is unplayable and is a horrible experience unless I use VPN now.
Remember how it took Blizzard like 2 years to nerf Brig? They donāt like to admit mistakes, they never do. This might their hill to die on. Iām sure a month from now all the EU Grandmaster players (all 8 of them that are left) will leave the game after losing every other match due to ridicilous latency issues with 250ms ping.
We already knew there were no players. I spend hours a night in queue. If I thought playing with 300ping would be a acceptable solution, I would have chosen Asian servers in Bnet launcher myself
Thatās such a low effort to get better queue times.
Let me be more clear:
Cheating like this to get more player in the same datacenter instead of working on make the game better to find new/more players is really a bad approach.
Sorry but after 5 years Iām out from this, first fps, most enjoyed game ever but devs/management is so lame that you donāt deserve me; you keep throwing useless feature while removing useful one.
I really hope you sink badly
I was gonna ask why this wasnāt stickied, but no one is really following the OP lol. If I could do all this on console I would, but alas.
Playing saturday morning on EU and I am on GTK1 in the practice range which is very strange. 280ms.
If you are immediately jumping into the Practice Range right when you start the game, that is going to happen. Wait at least 30 seconds from when the game loads (or exits from a previous match/game lobby), before attempting to run the practice range.
What happens is that the game client needs to take time to ping all possible servers and determine the ones that provides the best possible ping.
The problem isnāt getting queued with out of region matches, itās the fact that I want to play with other players grouped up in LFG without having to join their server on 180 ping. Why canāt just find a group with other NA players (since ping is much lower)

Hi, what region is this? average 350 ms.
Playable ? no of course. Forced to left the game by pressing Alt+F4.
Ok, so here is some weird dataā¦
Background: I live in Sweden and play with people in Australia now and then. If we are two people then one of us had normal ping and the other 350ms, or both of us were around 150ms (when routed through NA servers). Often I set my vpn to Australia to force Sydney servers so I had 350ms and the other their normal, due to me often playing on NA with 150ms so I am more used to playing with ping.
Now with this āglobal battle netā though things get really brokenā¦
With battle launcher set to America and vpn tested on Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane or Sydney I got a range of pings between 521ms - 644ms, and server showing ORD1 ?? So 200-300ms MORE then before global change, suggesting that I get routed from Sweden to Australia and then Overwatch thinks that the Chicago servers are better and routs me there??
Ok, so I thought I would set the launcher to Europe and test, still with vpn on the same cities. I got a range from 425ms - 620ms. 425ms could be doable I thought. But when I checked it was GTK1, so Japan. Australia was on America region before and Japan is Asia region. AND on top of that, connecting to the same city again showed it being random ping. 1st attempt launcher Europe and vpn sydney 425ms, 2nd attempt 540ms, 3rd attempt 455ms.
BUT, I never managed to get connected to SYD2 in any of the tries. Havenāt tested without vpn and grouping with an Australian player yet, but will be interesting to see the results of that. So far this āā¦players around the world will be able to come together all across the larger Blizzard ecosystem without any hurdles for the first time ever.ā just means that Blizzard is making it a lot harder, and in some cases impossible, to play with the people you were able to play with before this change.
using a VPN is a bad idea.
even if you set your location to somewhere else, the game will send you to a fasted game and another location.
i mean, you are in Sweden, you set your VPN location to NA server, then the game send you to Japan server. So your connection is travelling here and there and the ping is ridiculous high.
Unfortunally.
Normally no. If I set my vpn to Chicago then 99% of the time I get ORD1 along with 120-130ms stable ping.
Meaning playwise its barely any different from my normal 35-40ms ping. My accuracy with heroes like Ana, McCree, Soldier etc is the same.
Biggest difference though is that the quality of matches on NA is far greater then those on EU servers, even in QP.
It was just when trying to connect to Australian servers that things got weird and it was impossible to connect to the server I want to connect to. And even connecting me to Chicago with the vpn set to Australia, causing up to +410ms extra compared to connecting to Chicago directly. Something must be broken with the system at that point.
