I recently learnt that “h-tero” is automatically censored in Overwatch chat (I’ll censor it lightly here just in case). However, many other words aren’t; for example, or the c-word. I recently had my account silenced for using the c-word. To clarify, I wasn’t calling anyone the c-word, or using it in an offensive context, I was just saying how it was strange I could type out that word, but not the heinous “h-tero”.
To be extra clear, I’m not posting this here to complain about being silenced; if Overwatch doesn’t want that word being used in any context, then that makes perfect sense in my eyes. What does confuse me, is that if it is unacceptable to use the c-word in any context, then why is it not automatically censored, when the completely harmless “h-tero” is? I’m very rarely on the side of censoring swear words, but if Blizzard doesn’t want anyone to use this one ever, then why does the chat box allow it?
P.S. The word “h-mo” isn’t censored in the in-game chat either, but it’s blocked on the forum. Just another strange inconsistency.

Many can’t understand why
just block main toxic words that are toxic in ANY situation and phrase
but we have what we have
people can still use them

Lists of censored words are rarely edited by hand. A lot of games use generic ones, which is so many Korean MMOs used to censor “Hello” - it had “hell” in it. In this case, the forums and the game client use different lists, and I’m not sure anyone on the development team cares enough to sync them. Or rather, I’m not sure anyone on the production team cares to budget for that.

What makes the censorship a problem is they haven’t bothered to even think about the “scunthorpe” problem - i.e where a legitimate word includes something ‘naughty’ within it while itself being entirely innocent, but the ‘naughty’ bit still gets censored.

Yes. I have account censoring off, which would explain why that’s allowed (for me at least), but that only makes h-tero still being censored even more strange
Try writing the word for the jet propelled underwater missile a submarine fires, forum censors it.
I got voice chat silenced today. My mic has been broken for the last month. I’m sure the forum sheep will tell me how I could do better tho.

I mean, I’ve only gotten banned after actually being toxic and I always join vc.
You can barely talk on Roblox for this reason.
Almost anything you type will be censored because it will include one of the ten thousand things they’ve blocked.
Any reason you’d use any of those to convey relevant or strategic information to your teammates or enemy?
