In need of tips for competitive as a mostly qp player

high rank players, can you give me some tips that helped take you further in competitive(mainly play dps but wouldn’t mind tips about tank/support heroes), i’ve mostly played qp through my time playing OW but i wanna get into competitive a bit more, i would say i’m a gold/plat level player for some context

Honestly the best way to climb is to get a coach. Be it a professional paid one or a high level player willing to.

I paid for one for a month and my game play has improved beyond belief.

Hell I’d be willing to toss you a few tips if you want in game.

i don’t mind the idea of getting a coach but honestly just don’t want to spend money into getting good at OW lol

Honestly, Don’t play it. Stay pure and don’t get yourself into the toxic sh#thole called Comp. Its not worth.
Competitive is still so unbalanced with its matchmaking. You can be on your Diamond rank-up game and get a silver tank that goes 2-14 in 8 minutes. They need to fix it ASAP.

is it really still that bad? i quit comp because it used to become TOO serious for me, i would get frustrated when i lose and stuff like that, i’ve been enjoying the game a lot recently tho and been thinking of giving comp another try

matchmaking is at its worst state . I don’t mind average skilled players , but teamates making multiple mistakes and then blaming the tank is pretty common . If you wanna play comp make sure YOU CAN REMAIN COOL AFTER LOSING MATCHES where it was PRIMARILY YOUR TEAMAMTES FAULT .
otherwise do not play ranked, you will live longer .

Oke so,
You can always give it a try. But in my experience (plat4 to diamond 4) its really bad since OW2. The matchmaking is REALLY broken and its REALLY toxic. All matches have people complaining. Yesterday evening I played a match we where winning, our DPS got diffed and got mad so he decided to AFK rest of the match resulting into a loss. That kind of stuff happens more often the you think multiple times in one evening.
QuikPlay in those regards is way nicer as you can literally play whatever you want and goof around and have fun.

But if you want a golden run or comp rewards go and give it a try.

If you want tips for DPS, Just try to stay with your teams, Keep an eye on your healers so they don’t get picked from the backline, And be sure to shoot the squichy’s and not the tanks as that is a common mistake of DPS just mag dumping tanks.

Long post but yhea wanted to inform you <3 xD

Comp has been an utter joke for the entirety of OW2, and still isn’t fixed, no. That’s why people are seeing more high rank players in their QP matches, they don’t want to play comp and derank because they got a gold tank in a masters game.

At the moment QP is the superior mode, not because the matchmaking is any better, it isn’t, but because it doesn’t hold you hostage for too long.

Already 3 people confirming my opinion on the bad matchmaking love to see it :joy:

thank you(btw i don’t mind the long read) and this is exactly why i like playing QP more, feels like way less pressure on me to perform and barely are there times where i genuinely get mad when i lose/have a bad game. always wanted to get more into comp and reach a high tier but never had the tolerance to do so

Pretty much any class gets the blame, it just depends on the scoreboard. Tanks frequently get “tank diff GG” after 1 lost fight, or the deadweight people on your team seem to think that a tank has to ‘protect’ them, and they are dying not because of their own bad positioning, but because there is no protection

Dps get the blame if the tank has higher damage stats (news flash, the tank should have the highest damage stats)

Supports get the blame based on their healing numbers, even if allies are dying to unhealabke things like sniper headshots.

had a doomfist blame me for having less damage than him yesterday like he isn’t playing what is literally a dps character made a tank😭 i think we won the game regardless though

Pick a role, and pick a few heroes for your hero pool.

For Dps I recommend Soldier, Reaper, Sym and Junkrat. These heroes will let you deal with most things. Stay away from boom-or-bust heroes like Widow.

Remember to break everything and never stop shooting. Break Shield, Lamp, Ice Wall, Turrets. Sym is excellent here to burn shields and charge your damage up. Always put pressure on the enemy tank and help your tank push him back.

If the enemy team has a Mercy, always keep an eye on her after your team gets a kill. They often go for a ress.

You don’t need a coach, you can watch any streamer on the hero you like and copy their plays and positions.

I haven’t been high ranked/played comp in a while, but watching my replays was one of the more helpful things that helped me climb to GM when I did play. I could play a match where I felt like I played really well but still lost, and then watching the replay I’d notice the countless mistakes I had made that weren’t immediately obvious, and could then start working on improving those mistakes.

what do you think about characters like cassidy, ashe, and sombra. those are the ones i’ve been playing the most recently and would say i’m good at playing all 3

Cassidy can be good if your aim is decent, but it’s hard to get value out of him if you’re not hitting shots. Same with Ashe, better ult than Cassidy, but relies too much on aim to get value.

Sombra is only good if you can coordinate with your team. It’s a character that works better as your team gets better in the higher ranks. Most Sombras make the mistake to stay in stealth for too long, tp placements and not hacking packs for their team.

If you want to climb, I would just pick easy value characters, destroy the enemy tank and climb.

I used to be an avid competitive player got top ranks on Tank and master with support and honestly quitting competitive felt like I threw 30 pounds off my shoulders

Would never play it again ngl

And god forbid you pick something that wasn’t meta, everything is your fault, even if you play the best everything will be your fault for not being a meta slave

Having a strong mental is the single most important thing. Anyone without it will give up and/or never improve.

Pick 2 or 3 heroes max to play and get really good at them. Ideally heroes that cover each others weaknesses but honestly playing what you enjoy is more important as anything else risks you giving up.

Never blame your team. Yes, they will be potatoes but no matter what walk away from every game with something you need to improve on.

Don’t expect to climb quickly or even at all. You might climb rapidly but never expect it. It’s likely that you’ll need to work to improve.

Finally don’t care about your rank or even winning. This plays into the strong mental. Play to improve and the climb will come naturally from there. A lost game? Oh well gg go next and make less mistakes.

That’s what I did and it (just about) kept me sane.
