For those looking to improve your aim, I invite you to try this little exercise. First of all, you need to turn your crosshair off completely. One way to do this is to set it to the “dot” crosshair and set both opacity and dot opacity to 0.
Ok next, go try and play like this. Go play some deathmatch, maybe some quickplay, maybe widow headshots, whatever you want. Play aim-heavy characters that you want to improve with.
Now, how in the world do you aim with no crosshair? I invite you to spend a good hour playing like this. After awhile, you should notice that it is indeed possible to aim without a crosshair, you just do it differently. How do you do it?
The key is in placing your target at the center of your screen. You use the edges of your screen to move the target so he is dead center. So essentially, you focus on the target and consciously use your awareness of your entire screen area to place the target in the ideal location for a hit, aka dead center of the screen.
After you feel you have learned that, go ahead and select a crosshair again. Preferably one that is smaller. Now here is the important bit: even tho you have a crosshair, you must keep aiming using the “no crosshair method”. In other words, consciously focus on the target and positioning him in the center of the screen.
So basically once you get used to this, it goes: acquire target, position target in center of screen, use crosshair to aim precisely. That whole process happens in milliseconds after awhile.
You will find that your accuracy has increased a fair bit, as long as you can maintain your cool and consciously do this. Why does this work?
Well, aiming in this way forces you to focus on the ACTUAL TARGET, rather than your crosshair or zoning out. When we play FPS games, we tend to go into auto-pilot sometimes, and fixate on the wrong things. This exercise will train your brain not to rely on the crosshair for accuracy, but on the enemy itself and his position RELATIVE to your crosshair. Do this enough and you will find that your focus on the enemy and picking specific targets will increase dramatically.
Give it a shot and let me know how it goes!
