you people clearly need to go play other ftp fps games, if you have a free game, you are going to get infested with cheaters.
i still play tf2 sometimes lol, and it’s still fun
You truly are a gross human being. Really nothing more to be said here.
You can get used switch lites in the low-mid 100 USD area and play OW on it.
I really don’t think it’s unreasonable that someone has a switch and doesn’t have a phone, or has a prepaid phone.
Main difference is that you give your personal info and have a contract with the provider. Then they give you the sim and you choose to top up whenever you want.
The “burner” or anonymous SIMS are a different thing. Those are the ones that dont work and apparently there are a lot in US.
I can make you a promise no AAA company is making their decisions based on how it will affect their Switch user base because Nintendo and 3rd party games have tended to not be a major revenue source. It is just the way it is. The overwhelming majority do not buy their 3rd party games for a Nintendo console and companies do not give a Nintendo console a high degree of thought.
Even still though I can get you a smart phone for less than that with a plan and for the overwhelming majority of society you will get more practical use of out of the phone than the Switch so even still the argument falls flat.
There is a reason that this is another one of those “Overwatch bubble” problems where people outside of the bubble saw that announcement, shrugged and went “ya that makes sense”.
Lots of 2nd account & Smurf accounts
This is the best way to fix that issue will it solve it completely no, but on console it was so easy to create a new free account & piggyback off your old one
The simple facts are it’ll make the game far more accessible to those that can play it
The last few day have shown that with the extraordinary amount of low level accounts in every game all of a sudden & they ain’t new players
An alternative doesn’t mean a quick and easy pass for smurfs, even if its something extreme like spend $200 in OW coins to by pass, that at least lets people get around it who can’t play regardless.
yea an I’m 40 years old and own a bakery
anyone can say they’re 20. and honestly the way you type is easily 13-15 age range.
It doesnt solve the issue but it does go a good way to fix it
What they should have been doing was messaging people to tell them to get rid of there alt & smurf accounts then IP/console banning them if they didn’t
That would have gotten rid of the issue moreso but this is a great step forward
If you have to lose a few to solve the issue for the majority then it is the best way forward even if 5v5 isnt
I wish i had grown up as sheltered and privileged as you have…
Again, plenty of people dont need a cellphone or simply can’t afford a phone bill for no reason just to play OW2.
Where im at, the lowest cellphone plan i can get is 60
Some grade A compassion right there.
Alternatives? Who cares! Doesn’t affect me! lol
I’m sorry but it is the truth or should we let the game flow the way it has been with higher level player acting like scumbag to lower level player because they think they have the right to because there better than them in fame
Its like you don’t listen or read, I’m not saying they need to get rid of SMS for a free pass to smurf town, I’m saying they need to add an alternative.
What so you suggest?
That pre paid numbers can work as well. Heck half of them work already, but some of them don’t and its honestly none sensical.
Wow, what a horrifically classist and ablelist statement.
PoOr PeOpLe ShOuLd WoRk AnD nOt HaVe AnY fUn. EvEr!!!
I’m hoping there’s an ability to distinguish between prepaid phones and VOIP numbers. In my (admittedly brief) Google search, I saw that non-VOIP numbers are usually associated with a SIM card. I believe many prepaids give you a SIM card when you first purchase their service to use on your phone.
I’m hoping that AI is smart enough these days that they can tweak it to disallow VOIP #’s but allow prepaid phones.
For those still concerned about Smurfs, etc, buying a prepaid just for another account, we could have to re-authenticate with our phone numbers every so often, which would possibly discourage players from buying a quick burner just to snag another account.
So uhhhhhh what happens to your accounts then?
I have 2 alt accounts that I use rarely but I still paid for them??
like if I can’t play the game I paid for because it’s being replaced and now needs this sms protect then I feel like thats a bit of a scam.
that money I spent is now gone since I don’t have another number to use and obviously it wasn’t stated anywhere that you would need to have sms protect stuff when you bought accounts in the past,
If I can’t use these accounts I want my money back lol
/edit: just saying they are alts not smurfs (one of them I actually got higher than my main) and the other is the same rank as my main

I’m with you on not wanting to exclude a massive part of the player base because they can’t afford “regular” phones/service.
-
I’m not with you on your take of Blizzard basically being dicks. I stg the Overwatch team is legitimately one of the nicest and most conscientious teams I’ve seen in a big company like this. Let’s not forget that they DO care, even if sometimes they make decisions that aren’t great.
-
There is still time for them to change things or fix them. Give them a chance, y’all, they’ve been working stupid hard with little money (until the SA fallout) through the last few pandemic years.
-
I want smurfs gone, too. I’m hoping there’s a fix that allows prepaid phones but blocks VOIP numbers, with following # authentications every so often to ‘keep people honest’. They’re legitimately trying to solve a huge problem that a large portion of the (lower-level) player base has been complaining about for YEARS — they might not get it right the first try!
Deep breaths, everyone. Tell Blizzard what you don’t like and why, and shoot even offer any ideas you think would solve the problem.
Simply ranting about Blizzard not caring, etc, honestly is far from the truth from all the efforts we’ve seen from the Overwatch team trying to deliver something that pleases as many of the player base as possible. Which is, of course, impossible.
