FromSoftware’s Dark Souls released after Demon Souls, and they both have a significant impact in inspiring other souls-like games. I’m of the opinion that Dark Souls left a much more lasting impression. And so in my mind, Dark Souls is where the Souls like genre found it’s name.
Still, that’s pretty damn impressive to spawn an entire genre of games that make reiterations of your “recipe.”
imagine spawning an entire game genre out of your ingame mods and have AAA companies like Blizzard copy them because according to Terms Of Service they own all your ideas implemented with Custom Games
Most players looking at Dark Souls/Demon Souls spawning a genre haven’t seen or played Castlevania, or Metroid. As those games owe their design templates toward Metroid and Castlevania core level designs.
Overwatch isn’t a MOBA; it is based off of Quake Arena or Unreal Tournament.
Added post-hoc after the games were created so that Blizzard could take credit for them. Good thing the designers patented and copyrighted prior to the ToS changes.
Imagine spawning an entire game genre out of your in game mods in your AAA game that was spawned out of mods in another AAA company game (autobattlers)
Why do you think Blizzard gave so much attention to the OW’s custom games mode that nobody plays and then demanded copyrights on anything you make there?
Imagine making a ground breaking GotY in the hero shooter category, and then mismanaging the game so badly that you’re struggling to maintain a player base.
Not to my knowledge. Most have opted to be Tactical Shooters (Valorant & XDefiant), Battle Royales (Apex Legends), or Looter Shooters (First Descendant & Exoprimal).
Games like Battleborn or Gigantic have tried to be revived, but haven’t gotten much info as of late.
