Imagine designing a hero so broken

That you end up changing how fundamental game mechanics work, such as armour and tick weapons, and rebalance half the cast to accommodate everything.

Edit

Surely we must realise now, following on from Geoff’s post that we’re looking at 12 months of development and changes that are taking away from other things to fix ONE hero. I don’t see that that’s okay from either our position as players; or there’s as developers themselves.

Is there not a point at which they’re prepared to cut the rope? Or is time lost really that hard to let go? How many more months, how many more patches is it going to take?

TBH seems more like a flaw in the underlying balance philosophy held by Blizzard than the product of a single hero. I think certain heroes just highlight those flaws much more flagrantly than others (i.e. Reaper and Ana vs Winston and Zarya on whether weaknesses should be ameliorated or strengths doubled down). Blizzard’s not really adequately pragmatic and instead overly dogmatic in how they balance, and it really causes problems.

Let’s be honest here some of the major problems with the game all stem from or are related to briggite in some way… armour, cc, goats, “low skill” heroes and gamestyles, the burst dps powercreep…

Most heroes which profit from this change were very weak to begin with. I understand when people say that heroes like Orisa didnt deserve a nerf, but overall this has a positive effect on the game as a whole. Tanks arent going anywhere, as they are a necessity.
If you run a no tank comp, youre basically throwing. Tanks are important because of barriers and matrix, not because of armor.

imagine creating a character whose intended purpose was countering an entire composition

The problems have existed before Brigitte. It’s the hard swing in balance. Look at the game from launch to 2019.

Much of the roster plays radically different. For better or for worse that’s how they design it. The next meta will be as crazy broken as original triple tank, dive, spam, and so on.

They should just release a ton of new content and heroes this year then spend 2020 dedicated to competitive balance.

Right now it’s a headhunter meta, great time to be a DPS that can consistently critshot. Tank players may the odds forever be in your favor.

We hardly ever agree. But I agree with you on this one. It’s all looking like a mistake.

You mean Tracer?

In all seriousness. The flaw was the fact that whenever Blizzard needs to change the meta, they cover it up with a new one instead of actually dealing with it properly. How long has this been going on before? Long before GOATS existed.

No.

Brigitte killed this game and devs cannot figure how to fix it even with 8-9 nerfs to her.

It fine, It not Brig it’s armour.

Armour needs to be reworked if it going to be something people can create a lot of so it is getting reworked.

Armour affects some heroes a lot and some very little and this needs to be smoothed out a little

By extension, yes.

But there’s multiple factors and people would rather just focus on Brig then say the tanks themselves or Lucio.

If a hero comes off as too weak from this, you always can re-adjust with future buffs. I think Orisa deserves a compensation for this.

However i do think this is the right direction to take the game as it helps out alot of heroes which are currently not performing too well.
A Soldier or a Sombra is still not going to shred you like a Hanzo would spamming storm arrown into your head.
Armor is not what makes tanks valueable.

Absolutely false! ! !

Then explain why.

There will always be a single meta at this rate. Because instead of trying to introduce redundancies in the hero cast, Blizzard makes sure that only one hero can work in a specific comp so everyone is stuck playing the same heroes 24/7 with no opposition

It also doesn’t help that instead of buffing natural counters to comps, they decide to buff arbitrary heroes for heaven’s knows why or change a hero so it unbalances the ladder at the high or low end.

We just can’t win if they’re gonna keep doing the same thing.

Imagine designing a hero so broken that to counter it you have to add a hero like that.

“The path to hell is paved with good intentions.” as they say.

Is that really a positive thing given how most people already felt about playing them prior to the net-nerf? Much less now?

Games are meant to be enjoyable, there’s a serious problem when such a necessary role that takes up at least a third of a team is utter hell to play.

They also nerfed Doom into the ground and made shield bash not go through barriers. The devs have done some patches for the “good feeling” of tank play in the most recent time.
But this cant go as far as to make tanks too strong as they can just make dps heroes redundant.

To be fair, we only had Brig to begin with because Tracer’s only counters were all easily kited by her.

Edit: Most of Overwatch’s problems stem back to Tracer and the mobility creep.
