there’s a couple of maps I absolutely can’t stand, every time I get them it just makes me want to leave, but then I’m not allowed to play the game so instead I have to struggle through a god awful match. I’ve started to just take the 10 min break instead of suffering so it’s not even helping the issue. Please let us just blacklist maps we hate, or balance out when you’re put on attack or defense so it’s not the same thing for hours on end
No.
Basic map selection systems have proven time and time again to break up variety and reduce games to only a small portion of the overall package, while benefiting only a portion of the playerbase at the remaining playerbase’s expense.
There are better solutions to the/a root cause of leavers, but an a-la-carte map selector isn’t the fix here.
Overwatch should not regress to Vertigo in a sea of Dust_II queues.
You’re allowed to leave in the initial “assemble your heroes” phase before the match starts with no penalty.
but its the point of waiting in queue only to be stuck on a shi**y map or maps in endless cycles… like russian roulette
The matchmaker takes maps played into account and unless you do something to mess that up, such as joining a group, you should continue to get new maps.
If you hate all the maps in the game so much that you need to leave so many then I kind of suspect you dont actually like this game that much…
O dont think it does i get the same maps constently and sometimes get thise same maps ankther day not even once.
So one game is all you got
While it works in other games more similar to over watch like both tf2s
It 100% does. I play in a 5 stack for hours at a time and you can even see the pattern in the map rotation - it’s not even random (or at least not entirely).
But you must remember that it has to make that decision for all 10 people in the game, so depending on what game mode and map everyone just played, you’re bound to encounter cases where people will get the same maps every once in a while, or occasionally not see one at all.
The trick is to leave these maps in the first 30s, before the player selection timer ends. It will not count as abandoning and you will not receive a penalty. This is how I avoid the pitiful excuse for a mode that is Push. : )
With that said, I agree with adding map/mode select to avoid wasted queue time.
I also play in a full stack well used to gms cant play in fulls stacks place and we would constently get random copy maps like same map 3 or 4 times in a row then other days it would never touch the same map in 20 games then othe days weo nly played 3 maps rotating between those 3. I dont think its set up to be a patern its probably completely random
Are you talking about comp? I have no idea for comp, but I can understand if it was random to further reduce the ability to exploit the map rotation in some way. If you mean QP or arcade then I’m unsure what you mean since you can totally full stack as GMs in those modes, and those are what we’re referring to in this thread.
I think it has something to do with how you were grouping/queuing then, because I can say with certainty there is a pattern to it. We almost always get the same rotation of maps in the same order, and almost never encounter the same map in quick succession. In fact there’s a set of maps where I always play the same hero, and we routinely will get those maps all back to back followed by long periods where I dont play them.
Back when I used to play CTF, we would also get a nice cycle of those maps, and the map pool was very limited. Despite there only being like 5 maps you never ever got the same map back to back. There was almost always a full rotation of the maps before you played one again.
TF2 is just as bad if not worse especially given its vast map/mode selection and minimal maps/modes seen.
So thank you for yet another example of why it won’t work. For that matter, any example of an a-la-carte map/mode selector is most likely an example of why it doesn’t work.
Map voting is the next best thing, but even it has its limitations and drawbacks. There are better options already in use in 2023 and even more hypothetical options that work even better.
Just give me an “Opt out of Backfill”, that is literally the only time I leave games in progress.

I absolutely loved being able to queue for specific maps in TF2, but god help anyone who wanted to play anything other than the three most popular maps
I can personally understand why people want map voting, but you’re completely correct that it really harms the entire player population as a result.
Or, incentivize players to play out a backfill.
I really want players to get the maps and modes they want to play and less of the ones they don’t. But it cannot be at an overt alignment squarely in one camp’s favor.
No, I rather Opt out, I would rather sit in longer queues to get Fresh games, then EVER backfill.

Have any backfill games ever worked out in your favor?
Personally if I had to fathom a guess I’d say I win about 60% of them.
No, because I leave them. The one thing I have is time… so if I’m gaming, it’s because I’ve time to kill. I don’t need to be “play now, always play now”, so I have no issues waiting to get a fresh game. I don’t want to be sloppy seconds to someone’s match they left.

By that logic, it also suggests you don’t have time to finish the full games if you don’t have time to finish a partial one.
What’s your end goal for playing?
There is Zero logic in your statement. No, I’ve plenty of time to finish games I start. I just don’t want to be forced to finish someone else’s.

All you have is time, per your statement.
That implies that because you have limited time, you don’t have time to finish a game in progress which means you also don’t have time to finish a full game either.
I’m just trying to connect the dots.
Well if it’s a matter of opinion, then it’s just that lol.
How is finishing a game in progress affecting your objective quality of life in a way that a fresh game doesn’t?
