… against Tos, WTF Isn’t the filter just turned on and left on by default with no option to turn it off? Seems like an instant fix to this whole problem. Are they at risk of infringing on Free Speech if they don’t at least pretend to allow for all speech protected by the constitution? I believe (could be wrong) the legality here is: if it’s in the Agreement with ToS and a person agrees to it, they wave a lot of their rights under that law. So, if the rights to swearing are legally waved by agreeing to ToS, then there shouldn’t be an issue with a permanent profanity filter. Why is this still a problem?
it is not because you can still be reported for censured words.
The instant fix is not to use profanity. it’s that simple.
Profanity has never been allowed in the game. And the fact that so many players are SOOOOOOO upset that action is being taken just goes to show how much of a norm toxicity in the gaming world has become.
I’m glad that Blizzard is actually starting to take their TOS seriously, while there still needs to be some tweaking, it’s a step in the right direction.
As a private organization, they have the right to regulate speech however they like.
I beg your finest pardon? In what world (not directed at you here) is it possible to do the mental gymnastics it would take to even come close to making that make any sense whatsoever
If i have to guess the logic is that the other person can see when a bad word is being used even if they don’t know which one exactly.
Ppl can also bypass the filter by using different wording (which is also considered punishable according to ToS)
content creators are now making videos on this. so far styolsa has made a video. I’m sure more are to come.
Not arguing that. It just seems like there is a giant opening for people to abuse a system that could easily be avoided by removing the ability to cause an infraction to begin with
There is no “free speech” within private companies. Nor does said free speech protect you from the consequences.
The US also has a different law regarding free speech than other continents.
A filter is there so slurs aren’t visible, and not because it’s a free option to use slurs without consequence.
Yup! People still don’t know the difference between a “right” and a “privilege”.
Telling gamers not to cuss in a competitive game is like telling a child not to grab a bag of candy off the shelf. And considering that most gamers here are adolescent at the younger end, it’s pretty much a fools errand to root out cussing in a game like this; especially with so many factors to tick you off.
You can cuss. But mic mute exists. And you’re going out of your way to type it. So…people do have options in their hands.
I’m literally beside myself with some of the ignorance on this thread. I really wish people were taught how to extrapolate the point of a matter and not just what they want to see and immediately argue against for the sake of being a contrarian
Considering that a majority of gamers tend to only use VC to yell at their team, this is true. However, there’s also a high number of people who will just stop to cuss you out in chat.
Though with the way blizzard decides to censor words, someone could easily be saying something generic or important, but the word gets censored because it had a few letters in a specific order in the middle of a much longer word.
I don’t know about you, but my parents taught me manors. I didn’t run around cussing when I was a teenager.
Gamers are pretty toxic in games, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay. It’s a behavior that has riddled the gaming industry for a long time and it’s nice to see that Blizzard is actually starting to be more consistent in enforcing what has been in their TOS for years.
Hate to be frank, but in a game, no one is going to care about that info. Even kids around 10 years of age will swear (barring that their parent isn’t in the house).
Didn’t say it wasn’t, but it is funny to watch someone go into a rage after getting pasted repeatedly.
Probably. With the way their filter works, like i said before, a completely different word can get censored because the letters aligned a certain way; but others won’t know what was actually said and believe it was a swear. There’s a line between being strict, and being too strict.
Yeah, it’s easy for people to think that other humans are undeserving of respect when hiding behind a computer right?
Yes, I’ve seen this happen a few times. When I type, I don’t always hit the right keys, I’ve had it where I went to type whoops the letters get censored except the s and I’m baffled as to why, and what word they thought I was typing.
I’ve said this previously, I do believe that Blizzard can do a better way of communicating and providing clear examples. Because I was silenced for trying to strategize with my team, I didn’t swear. I had one of the support agents send me a lit of what was reported and it included line such as “lol” "junkrat has ult’ “I can’t believe that reaper didn’t kill me whne I was rezing in front of him”. SO I was a little confused. It made me feel like I needed to walk on eggshells for a while and not say anything in the game.
Hence why I record all my matches now.
SO I’m not saying there isn’t room for improvement, but what they have started to do is a step in the right direction.
Stop using logic this is Blizzard
People will circumvent filters. Always have. The filter is there for the basics and for people who wish to have some control over their experience. The rule, for better or worse still stands. The punishment also requires someone to report you, so if you say talk within group chat only, the rule can be ignored.
I speculate OW2 has changed hands (had different employees changed around) so many times, no one knows where the product is or where it’s heading and they are just flying by the seats of their pants. This includes features that are likely unfinished and forgotten but remain in the product because they didn’t even know it was there.
