Genji is the third on a small minority of players, played heros on leaderboards. if you aren’t an insane one trick getting actual tangible value on him in GM/top500 is difficult. Especially with mercy and kirko pocketing long range hitscans genji just doesn’t have the burst rn to kill confirm or pressure the hitscans. everyone uses the argument “oh he’s played so much” when in actuality they have maybe a few games played on him with a sub 50% winrate on leaderboards. But he definitely isn’t the most played that would be sojourn junk tracer sym widow torb pretty much everything else. Cassidy sombra reapers and genji appear but aren’t even threats let alone picked enough to warrant this apparent “he’s the most picked”

i mean, the fact that you wouldnt switch to genji in any case to counter pick someone or to get a better team comps says enough alone, nobody would willingly swap to genji unless they are a one trick

Okay I played him. I did 17K damage per 10, outhealed Moira and got POTG twice in one match, one of which was by deflecting riptire for a 6K (enemy BOB was out).

I think the best way to buff genji without affecting the lower ranks is probably giving him shorter cooldowns. As of now, if you dive too hard, you get punished. He already has to carefully select targets and be in a position to punish players out of position. If he fails to secure the pick, he’s out of the game for the next 8 seconds.
Even OTP in T500 often just sit there doing nothing. He has insane downtime in higher ranks.
I main him in Diamond/Masters and half the time, I’m spamming tanks and just gauging the enemy team.
Consider that every other character can continue doing damage/be productive without cooldowns while sitting back, where genji/doom/rein cannot. That is the inherent problem with characters based on cd. It’s why doom (I also main Doom) feels so clunky after nerfing his punch from 3-4 seconds.

Also, OP is definitely right about tracer. I climbed to Masters with Tracer, but enjoy Genji far more. I put him down just to climb, and also started feeling bad that my team has to put so much effort into supporting his style. Every time I want to climb, I always have to put Genji down. He’s just not viable despite my playtime.
Even at low elos, it’s far better to just pick soldier and shoot the tank. It’s what everyone else is doing.

I really don’t think its for no reason. I will admit that I absolutely loath Genji with a hot fiery burning passion. If there is any hero at all in the game I would delete, it is Genji without a shred of doubt and with zero hesitation. Why, you may ask? Simple. I do think he’s easy to get a lot of value from, and his kit does way too much for what he’s able to do. He has deflect which will throw all damage from projectile and hitscan back, which is 4/5s of the cast. Even blocks melee damage from Rein and Brig. His Dash should not reset. His Dash allows him to bust straight through everything dealing damage to everything he hits in the path, and then if he gets an elim or an assist after, the cooldown resets and he turns a 180 and goes right back through again.
Then add on wall climb AND double jump, he has one of the best mobility in the entire game with I think the third smallest hitbox? Only being beaten by Tracer and de-meched Dva? Then his Ult. Now, while it isn’t massively powerful like others, it has essentially no weaknesses beyond spread out and immortality. Which… come on, that’s the same thing, and with his Dash and hyper mobility, he’s usually able to chase someone down anyways.
The only thing I hate more in this game than Genji, is people from the forums with this saying. “Oh, if so and so is SOOOO OP, then just one trick them to masters! Or even top 500!” Shut… up! Oh my god, why is that a saying? Do people just forget that A: There are NINE other people playing, who actually (usually) belong in the rank you’re trying to climb to? B: Even if the person is Meta, that means there is the DPS from the other team who will be playing either them, or another DPS that does their job better, and again with point A belong in that rank and will literally curbstomp you.
The reason you may or may not see Genji right now is for 2 reasons. The biggest is that just… he’s average. There are other people who just do his job with less effort. Why would you take the time to get to know his kit and rock with it when you can simply go Widow and snipe someone from across the map, or go Sojourn who has great mobility as well and is able to dish out damage without the jumping and dashing and cooldown management. Which is the second reason he’s not used. He is definitely incredibly hard to get use out of with how high his skill ceiling is that no one wants to put in the time for it when you can do things easier with less effort.
I for one an absolutely happy he is not used more. If anything, I want him nerfed because I still run into him in a few of my games but I know that’s just my bias against him. When I run into him in any of my games, if I even hear a single shuriken, I am immediately switching to Torb or Mei. With tank, I used to go Roadhog so I could hook his bouncing cyborg butt but he got nerfed so I usually try Zarya or Rein but its hard because you also have to worry about the other tank so you don’t get as much freedom to counter a single DPS as tank.

His point was double jump hard to hit and 50 damage is insane for a cooldown.
ashe bomb, ana nade, cassidy nade, and i can list SOOO MUCH MORE that does double even triple the damage, double jump is his worst part of the kit cause it makes him MORE vulnerable.
50 damage is insane while we have 130 nade 120 rockets 150 from TNT 60 ana nade but yes genjis is insane
Hell, one damage boosted rail is 4 dashes.
These people always complain about Overbuff but then when you ask for alternative data sources it’s just

Overbuff only started having issues very recently, and even then there’s still a ton of valid data

It stopped working at the tail end of season 1 of ow2 and what data its all the same for all ranks so how can we even tell what its for
