Ideas for unique hero abilities/concepts?

What are some ideas you have for concepts, abilities, etc. that we don’t have yet? Browsing the forums, reading/participating in threads, and playing the game, I’ve had/found a few ideas. (I’m terrible with coming up with names, but I’ll try anyways)

Passive Anti-burst support: Ability “Reactive shield drone” - Buffing an ally with this will cause the next instance of damage they take that deals damage greater than or equal to half of their max hp to have that damage reduced by X% (Im thinking 50-60%) and consumes the buff. Only takes base damage into account, not critical damage. Im thinking it’ll be a 30s buff on a 10s cd. You can target yourself with it, but only if 2 allies are already buffed.

Ability suppression dps or support: Ability “Mind suppression”. Single target, can only be active on one target at a time. Targeted enemy has the duration of their abilities and ultimates reduced by a percentage. Im thinking somewhere between 20%-33%. Moderate to long cd if you want to switch to a different target. Debuff lasts until death of the caster or target, or until a different target is selected. Can target enemies within LoS at any range or 50m+ if unlimited range is too much.

Passive damage intake “smoothing” tank - “Ignore pain” passive. I played a little bit of WoW, and while I never got into tanking, I did find the monk tank’s passive very interesting. A percentage of damage received is taken immediately as normal, the majority of it is converted into a dot taken over the next few seconds. The tank would also have an active ability to dump a percentage of the converted damage every so often, either doing nothing besides getting rid of it, or maybe even utilizing it in some way offensively.

Some of these may or may not be too strong with the stats I gave them, and thats fine, as most of those numbers can have some tweaking done, if necessary. Its more about adding unique things we dont have yet.

Those are all solid.

Here’s my mine: A hero that takes off their shoes to puke in a polyethylene bag for 3.26s on an 18.1s CD. You said unique and there’s nothing like this in any game.

Soldier gun but for a support, you shoot allies to heal them. Can crit heal

Not quite what I had in mind, but true. It gives me an idea for an addition to my april fools patch. “Take a breather now has a 10% chance that the canister will be from a bad batch and cause roadhog to stand still for 3s and puke into a bag, healing from the bad batch is 70 instead of 350.”

Although not quite what I had in mind for a new concept, crit healing for targets at any health level, not just below half, would indeed be new.

Nice ideas. Here are some highlights of mine:

Tether (damage redirection)

Switch-Teleport (switch places with an ally)

Freezing/Petrification (like Mei, only they gain damage reduction.)

Banishment (alternate plane, cannot be targeted or can attack until the timer runs out or caster is killed.)

Manipulation (controls are inverted/character is controlled by AI for a brief moment).

Illusions/Clones (Like Echo, but a separate entity, like BOB)

Forced-Melee (imo what EMP should be)

What about an earth based hero (see Petrification), since we have water (Mei)? And a pyromancer of course for fire…but air? Tickle damage and knock back. Mwahaha.

Some of these sounds suspiciously like abilities from warframe.
*cough * trinity, loki, frost/atlas, limbo, nyx, nyx/equinox/loki, loki again, atlas again, ember *cough *

Not saying thats a bad thing, just sounds a lot like where they came from. Some stuff from there could work, a lot probably couldnt.

I like the idea of a summoner tank. Imagine Ashe if she had less damage, and a less-lethal BOB on a 12s cooldown. Send in a meat-bag to absorb enemy fire, contest points, and knock enemies off her teammates.

I had a concept for a ‘magdump’ support; in essence, their healing would dump all of their ammo (potentially segregated from damage ammo?) all at once, and would reload similar to Ashe’s weapon, making them amazing at dishing out bursts of healing, but bad at sustained heals; if they had a full magazine and dumped it they’d full heal a tank and possibly then some… but then they have to spend a while reloading before they can burst again. Could potentially go well with a oneshot prevention type ability or something?

Hitscan tank
Ability one “Xy creation” creates 3 platforms mid air
Ability 2 Vaccum create a very short ranged vaccum that pulls enemies in towards them.
Ability 3 temporarily allows teammates to regan hp.

Ultimate, gravity well, slams the ground with a extreame amount of force dealing damage and causing all enemies within Los to rush toeards him (can be blocked by shields.

Yeah…oof, you caught me. Don’t send me back to the void please. :frowning:

I think they could work whenever PvE releases though. But I agree. I was just spitting “ideas that I like from favorite game”.

Designing any ability for PvP will be different than PvE just because it’s a different atmosphere.

While this sounds interesting, Im worried it’d work too well with a tank like Orisa whos hard to kill already, by using it when they get low and their defensive cds arent ready yet, filling in that gap where they are supposed to be vulnerable due to having cycled through their cds.

Sounds interesting, if maybe difficult to balance.

Yeah, I think most of it would do really well in PvE, but couldnt be present at all or could only be present in a limited way in PvP.

I’ve been saying it for years that we need some sort of crosshair-guided missile ability. Like imagine just launching a rocket and then tracking a Pharah in the air to blow her up.

AOE bullet slowdown abilities.

Turns hitscan into projectile in the area, I’ve not seen it done outside of 2d bullet hell games.

Summoners are hard to balance, since summons are very strong in low ranked play, and very weak in high ranked play.

I would love them, but they are hard to make work.

Yeah boiiiii I had a Brit support concept with this. She throws down a field that stops bullets like the matrix. Heroes like Sig, D.Va and Genji can then eat or deflect them. Thought it might be pretty cool.

Yeah, it would give people a way to contest Widow without it being a shield, or stopping window from being able to headshot them.

Which makes it a pretty cool support ability. It would be difficult to tune, since you want it to roughly effect each hero the same amount, and that is “hard”

But it is a cool as hell ability, I would love to see.

I’m sure this is either broken or weak. But a new hero or mercy rework where your primary allows you to draw circles and the size of the circle determines the amount of healing. The smaller the circle the higher the healing, the bigger the circle the lower the healing. But that’s pretty tough to implement I’d assume and play.

The implementation of this is actually super easy, even in the scripting overwatch scripting language.

I love abilities where the difficulty of using is picked by the user, giving a “effectiveness / generalisation” tradeoff.

They tend to scale REALLY strongly with rank, though (since it relies on massive amounts of co-ord to get the most value), so you would have to stick it with abilities which don’t, unless you want another Tracer where they are only played in GM.

It is mostly trying to balance across ranks which is hard with it. I like it though.

Typically you press a button to target it, and the circle gets bigger or smaller as the time goes on (depending if you start it big, or start it small), so the UX is pretty easy, and people pick up abilities like that super quickly.

I would love to see abilities like Electric Arc from PF2e. Where you stick it to 2 enemies, and it fries them until they split up far enough / break LOS .

I’d also give mercy her cooldown on GA back or even lower. And that’s just because the requirement to focus healing would be harder and she’d have to stop more often to pull it off. And it’s engaging I’d assume and it’s not direct combat.

You were thinking for it on Mercy? Interesting.

I thought it was for a new hero.

She DOES have the draw a magic circle animation…

Originally mercy. But frankly a new hero would be a more respectful approach.
