Idea for a voice interaction

I don’t know if other fans know but Pharah’s voice actress has been frequently streaming on twitch.
One thing we got to learn is that she is fluent in french. So I think it would be cool for her to have a voice interaction with Widowmaker. She could speak something in her native language, maybe making fun of Helix Soldiers(since they are just cannon fodder anyway), only for her surprise, to have Pharah answer her back in french.

This would make sense for two reasons: it could reinforce Pharah’s Canadian heritage and also the fact that she has an important position in an international organization, which usually requires a person to speak multiple languages.
(I know she kinda has a french voice line, but can you even consider “en garde” as an indicator that someone is fluent in a language?)

Sombra’s VA can also speak french so it would also be cool for her to share a conversation with Widow. It would highlight the fact that she’s a prodigy for quickly picking up a language just so she could communicate with the blue lady.

Yeah but if someone is playing without subtitles and can’t speak french they won’t understand what they’re saying

I was thinking that having subtitles could enable interactions like this. But your point is valid.

Maybe a revenge or kill line, then? Like when they kill each other they could have a specific line in french. Or an unlockable voice line.

What would French sound like with an Egyptian accent, though?

I love the idea of Sombra speaking French with Widow, esp if they use it to their advantage during a mission or Sombra teases Widow :smirk:

I’m starving for any new Pharah content, I’d love to hear her speak French. I like the idea of Pharah mocking Widow in French after a kill, or Mercy and Pharah using French to communicate in the battlefield so enemies can’t understand them (fat chance of the writers letting them have any interactions though)

I wouldn’t know. But that is something that could be researched seeing Egypt’s history with France.

I could totally see Sombra purposefully pronouncing things wrong just to annoy Widow or trying to imitate her intonation in a dramatic way.

Both of them communicating in french would be something natural, but something even cooler is that in Mercy’s short story they made canon that she can speak arabic. So I guess It would be funny when they meet that Pharah defaults to french when speaking to Mercy, and Mercy defaults to arabic when speaking to Pharah. Surprising each other.

Interestingly, Mercy’s VA doesn’t speak french but she does speak greek. Fans have been asking for a greek character since release, because of the Ilios map. Maybe they could’ve made her have some kind of relationship with a character from there.

There’s an old joke that was born out of that fact. “I can speak anything but Greek. Right now, it’s all Greek to me.”

That’s a funny one. Greek does look like a hard language to learn/understand.

Also, I’ve been talking about Pharah’s VA but I forgot to plug in her stream(I think it’s fair to do so).

That would be so cute, somebody please put Alyssa Wong in charge of their first meeting to make sure something like this happens.

I think we can forget any kind of friendly meeting for the two. Even though the in game voice interactions show us that they are friendly, and respect one another. One of the points of the Valkyrie short story was to establish that Pharah is everything that Mercy hates. She is traumatized by rockets, she hates Helix, the Raptoras, and scoffs at the notion of justice. It was as subtle as a truck full of metal coils hitting the side of a building. But Mercy is the most contradictory character in overwatch, so who knows?

I don’t think Alyssa Wong will get the chance to write Mercy, it’s clear that Chu writes the main favorites and delegate the other heroes to other writers.
If I were to guess, Baptiste is going to meet Pharah in Egypt, maybe he is going to save her life and they will develop a relationship or something else boring and shoehorned like that.

Ah yes, she hates everything Pharah stands for but was totally down for asking a Blackwatch assassin to dinner, lmao at Chu’s writing

Tbh, the optimistic part of me hopes that Alyssa gets put in charge of the series that is supposedly slated to be released on Netflix and that it will focus on the heroes Chu sidelines in the games. I don’t really plan on buying OW 2 at this point or have much interest in whatever Chu writes, I’m here mainly for Wong and the characters she’s in charge of lmao. Pretty sure that even a Baptiste Pharah romance written by her would be better than Chu’s attempts at writing romance.

After the Valkyrie short story it became clear to me that Mercy is just the Bella Swan of overwatch. The young adult novel protagonist that the female audience project into, that even when she’s wrong the writer makes that she is right. With her troubled, but perfect man, with a shady past(but is instantly forgiven), that came back from the dead with the help of fantasy science magic. There is even the infamous sentence, also known as the “I’m a fanfic writer” flag: “I let out the breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding.”(Look it up, page 6)

I’m not going to buy overwatch 2 either, because it’s a given that the characters I like won’t play any relevant role in the game that is focused on PVE. So why bother? And while Wong is good at writing characters, her plots are not that interesting. I read the comic book that she wrote for marvel and It didn’t excite me. What makes me even sadder is that she assumed the Doctor Aphra comics, and that series was my favorite…so yeah, bummer.

Oh God, please, no more shoehorned romance. What happened to character development? Just sit down and write tri-dimensional characters, stop cutting corners by shoving them in the first relationship you see. Just give me a proper character arc that follows the plot with motivations and real stakes.

Oh man, it’s a bummer to hear that her comic wasn’t that great plot wise. I still would much rather read her writing than Chu’s, everything about it is better even if the plot itself isn’t amazing, that’s one of the reasons she would be better off writing the side stuff and characters in OW.

I don’t have much faith in the main plot or characters of OW being that interesting as long as Chu is the lead writer, but Wong could make some great side plots and contained stories to further flesh out the universe. My hope is that Blizzard actually goes all in on expanding the OW IP and creates multiple comic/series spin offs focusing on the heroes that aren’t part of the main story itself. The world of OW is a mess bc the overarching lore and plot are a mess, but I think that good writers could do a decent job of fleshing it out in these side projects and expanding on the solid character/world building base Chris Metzen left behind.
