I understand that I'm bad at the game but hear me out

I understand that I am bad at this game. Placed gold/plat season 1 and all throughout seasons 1-20 stayed in b/w gold and plat. I’m a little bit worse than the mediocre player but throughout the seasons I couldn’t play as much due to busy schedules. Now recently I have played a lot more competitive but I don’t know. I’m losing almost every game because people throw or refuse to communicate. I had friends that played with me before but now they say since I’m closer to silver than gold they’re too high of a rank to play with me since some of them are high gold/ plat. I just can’t seem to solo Que and win. I have tried to rank up my healer SR but even while getting a consistent 15k-20k healing every game (as moira, mercy, and ana) and a good bit of damage and elims (as moira) I still cannot seem to win. A lot of the times it comes down to throwers who think it’s funny to ruin the game for others, like there have been so many instances where I’ve had people purposefully throw and be vocal about it. I don’t know how Blizzard would fix it but I wish there was a system that didn’t make me lose 30-50 SR every game especially with throwers and when I win I wished the SR gain was more than 5-15. Like it’s frustrating and I understand that I am probably in the rank I play in but I just wish there was a less harsh system. Anyways if you have any suggestions of how I can rank up in this system other than the annoying “git gud” or “uninstall” that other people say I would love to hear it!

Don’t listen to them. It’s a common thing to say that you just had a bad team, or blame your team ig, never do this, if your team is toxic just leave vc and mute channel. And if you are playing healer, and wanna rank up with healer I highly recommend you to watch ml7 unranked to gm series.
Cheers! I believe in you.

Thank you so much! I will check that series out but I appreciate you taking the time to actually give me some good advice!

In regards to the SR gain/loss, its based on your hidden MMR.

If your MMR is much lower than your SR, you’ll notice high SR losses with losses and low SR gains with wins. The system will try to have the two values converge. The only way to improve your hidden MMR is to play actively and win often. And vice versa, you can get insane SR gains if you happen to have a much higher MMR than your SR.

As for the other parts, I highly suggest, like what the other commenter said, to watch better support players and try to learn their tips and tricks. At the same time, don’t use their playstyles as gospel, because the teammates you get at high ranks is vastly different so not all playstyles are transferable to lower ranks. You gotta apply them and adjust them to your own style. Also, don’t be afraid to swap to a different playstyle midgame depending on your team, or even mid-fight! Sometimes being an aggressive support works very well when you have an aggressive tank line, sometimes being passive is better.

Your attitude of not wanting to give up and persevering is half the job done already! You’re already better than a lot of others who just give up or push the blame completely to others. Keep it up.

Thank you! I will definitely continue to attempt to climb! I appreciate your encouragement and advice!

Moira has carry potential around silver, like hard carry potential, in my opinion at least. You’re probably getting lots of heals from tanks that are feeding, double check that you’re also not just focusing on tanks for healing. Unless the enemy team is coordinating ults well, I’d just use coalescence for taking a tank or a few squishies out of a fight before it starts while trying to heal if your DPS aren’t doing much. If both teams have rein, you can also save it for when the enemy charges your rein, because if you heal your rein when he gets damage from the charge he lives and they lose their rein (rein can decide games pretty easy and it’s a huge loss for the enemy team especially if it’s their only shield since most expect to sit behind a shield).

Also if you can, try playing later at night because there will definitely be less throwers then during the day, as people are usually up at that time to actually play.

Idk why your friends wouldn’t play, if their so much better than the people in your rank they shouldn’t be scared, it should be easy wins and help you get back to a place where there’s more people who actually play the game properly.

This happened to me.
When I first got to diamond, the game did not want me there. I was losing 30SR per loss and getting 18 per win, but I kept pushing.

Sometimes what you need is to shake up the system. before season 12, I was a DPS main. I played Rein, and was getting good with him in season 11, but I still didn’t play him. But in season 12, I got a good friend, and we Duo-d from low plat to diamond. Sometimes what you need is a big change. For all we know, you could be a potential top 500 Wreckingball main, or a masters Zenyatta, but you just have not unlocked your potential.

The game might be against you, but you prove that you deserve it. Gold is not a mythical place. It is a place that, with enough dedication and practice, you can get there.

Recognise when you are having bad days. if you are not doing good, don’t do comp, and keep practising. If you do good in practice, try out comp.

Don’t let yourself get tilted, never give up (important, every game can be turned around. Even if they have 5 more minutes to attack, it is still winnable. Even if they have 4 minutes to get the one tick, you can still draw. Get into the mindset of “Dang, we probably are going to lose the game, but giving up makes me lose more SR, so let’s make this as annoying as possible”.

Everyone can get better. I was silver in season 3, and gold for 6 months. Heck, it took me almost 4 years for me to get masters (then drop out right away). It’s a constant battle, but you must use your brain.

Unset your profile from private. Go to overbuff after a few games to see how your stats compare to others at your rank. You’ll more than likely find something to work on.

Best way how to climb if you cant do it on your own is watching top players playing your heroes to know what to do and share your replay codes so someone can review it.

Are you US or EU?

Honestly with support I’d highly reccomend moira and lucio. They’re not as team dependent as other healers and they’re easy to get value out of when your team isn’t working together. Play consistently so your skill doesn’t decline, that’s literally the worst I hate it. If you lose 3 games in a row stop so you don’t go on a lose streak. That works really well but unfortunately for me I have zero self control :’)

US. And thanks for the advice

So a friend of mine who just left Overwatch gave me his second account on Wednesday last week (gold tank, silver DPS, silver support). My peak SR is 27/28/26 across the three roles so I don’t expect you to have the same results as me.

As of two days ago, I climbed out of Silver on support (1-tricking Ana). Ana can be a great hero to play but you have to be cautious as to how you balance your role as support.

Bare in mind that it is the “SUPPORT” class not the “healer” class. You are obligated to output damage and help kill enemy players. However your primary function is to sustain your team so again, find the balance that helps you be successful in game.

For example, I almost always use the anti-grenade to help my team win team fights. My other supports have been pretty good about keeping me healed and I hit enough shots consistently that my tanks stayed healed up.

Pick a main support and an off support that you’d like to be proficient at and go into quick play to try and learn how to use the hero (main and off support perform different jobs so you need at least one of each). Go to YouTube and search for videos that will help you effectively use their kit.

This will help you feel better prepared in game and you’ll learn some tips/tricks to outsmart/outplay you’re opponents. The same approach applies to the other hero classes…

Don’t be afraid to lose games either. You’re going to lose a lot of games until you achieve your (ideal) SR.

P.S. anyone in gold/low plat who says you’re too low to play with them is an elitist holding on dearly to their place in the ladder and afraid of losing it. Find people who want to climb but prioritize improving as players rather than achieving a certain rank.

She has carry potential up to and through Diamond. She’s so strong. I don’t know if I’m just really good at her or she’s just extremely broken but I blew through gold and platinum with an 80% winrate when RQ was introduced.

Yeah but her carry potential is decreased severely the higher you get. Like you could probably carry 2 dps and your other support in silver but because of the enemy team being more skilled higher up, they would steamroll you if you had useless DPS and another support. If it was just after role que was made then maybe people just weren’t used to the situation and/or dealing with moira, I think she becomes way less viable in diamond and above.

I don’t want to be rude but your friends are high gold and low plat and refuse to play with you ? They are literally the same rank as you. Gold and most of plat is basically the same rank. At least to me. You don’t start noticing a measurable difference until high plat.

As for ranking up. Lucio. That’s my recommendation.

Elitist or not, it is still smart decision to not play with someone who is stuck lower. Even coach would tell you that. Not only you will have to carry yourself, but someone else on top of that.

If you’re truly a platinum player, you’re working towards the crossover into diamond. You should be capable of performing your role and picking up the slack of at least one other person.

If you’re afraid to play with someone a few hundred SR lower than you then you obviously aren’t capable of maintaining your own rank without a boost.

Just my opinion though…

(Disclaimer being this only applies to silver-platinum as the skill gap between 2500 and 3500 begins to widen drastically).

If you play seriously, you want to climb. Not to maintain your rank.

Well sorry but i think you are wrong. Partialy, because it really depends on the person you are grouping with. Your statement can be right and wrong based on that.

If you are 2500 player and you group up with 1800 hardstuck player you can win 4 games. That will make you 2600 and that will be your peak, even if you are fine at 2600, your hardstuck friend is out of his elo. But he was hardstuck for a reason so you will have to play on your peak + on top of that compensate for hardstuck friend who do not belong in 1900. There is too real danger that you will be placed in higher match since you are plat, agaisnt other plats. Your silver friend will have super hard time to keep up with speed of the game.

I would group up only if i knew that my friend is serious about climbing and actively doing a lot to improve at the game. Only then i would group up. I almost exclusively play solo because i know my friends are not try hard and do serious about climbing as i am when i am on my main.

I can find a video from iostux where he is talking about this if you want. Grouping up will give you benefit only if others in group have same comp mindset and dedication to get better at game. Not many people have it.

Supporting is pretty rough there, since you don’t have THAT much impact in the game.

Like, the thing which REALLY helped me was learning when to STOP healing. The moment that little voice in your head starts saying, we are not going to win this fight, then bail…

Don’t wait, don’t heal, just bail, like RIGHT NOW.

All you are doing is staggering your team if you don’t.

Your healing numbers are really good, but, that is likely meaning you are keeping people alive who SHOULD be dead, and worse yet, you are GOOD at it.
