I think I've figured out how a Mind Control could work in Overwatch

One thing that’s really gone against making a Mind Control effect in Overwatch is that people hate how it works. It results in a total loss of control, and allows your enemy to make you do something you don’t want to do. But on the other hand, a Mind Control would feel awesome to use.

To make a compromise, I’d have it work in the following way:

  • When you Mind Control an enemy, you gain control of their movement and disable their abilities.
  • When you are Mind-Controlled, you cannot control your movement or use abilities, but can still aim and shoot.
  • Interrupting or killing the hero using Mind Control ends the effect prematurely.

This means that your opponent would only be able to forcibly reposition you, but you can still fight. You could even shoot and kill the person MC-ing you. However, your abilities would be disabled so you can’t Wraith Form or Cryofreeze yourself out of the Mind Control.

Would this compromise make it acceptable?

Nope. Sorry man, I love mind control, but nopeX100000

To me this sounds awful. Anything that removes my ability to fully play the game is miserable, which is why I hate hack and lengthy stuns. Maybe I’m just bias, idk.

I dig that you’re brainstorming mechanics btw. I’ve got a challenge for you: mechanics that are neither cc nor are the mobility based. Good luck.

I’d imagine it’d be like the RIP-tire.
You can’t move and you’re vulnerable, but for a few seconds an enemy member becomes one you control. It’d also be an interesting way to force you to flex.

Already have one: Holograms.

Oooh. I like that. But I might have similar issues as Spy disguises: useless against a communicating team.

I’d always thought environmental control would be a cool hero, but entirely map dependant and predictable after a while.

I have them in my Hero Concept, Psych.

The way they help is like Mirror Image in Warcraft 3: they confuse the enemy. In pitched firefights, it can be just the thing to trick even skilled opponents.

I think the most annoying CC I have come across is where it mixes up your movement keys for X seconds.

Example:

A = forward
S = strafe left
D = backwards
W = strafe right

Mouse look = inversed

(directions are randomly assigned each time).

People will just make the person Suicide, but I like CC, and yes I like stuns, and I well want a hero who can unallow someone to shoot, but not using his abilities (useless against Doomfist, but Super Strong against Mei or Zenyatta ^^

No, mind-control, outside of PvE, is never a good choice nor is it fun.

So you can just force people to jump off cliffs over and over again? How fun…

There’d be a better use for it. The way I’m thinking to use it is on a character who can turn enemies into living bombs. You set up the target enemy, Mind Control them, and then steer them into their teammates. Boom.

If you’re dead set on mind control, how about give the controlling player the opposite of what you suggest.

Player never loses control of his character, but the mind controller can forcibly activate abilities or fire. Give the player on the receiving end ~ .5-1 second warning that the ability is on them, allowing them to throw out something to disallow the enemy to use it on their behalf.

I dont want it, but if I had to chose some way of implementation, it’d be this.

Challenge accepted.

Smokescreen / Illusions, Decoy / hologram / drone, Damage to health conversion, Friendly fire status effect, burning status effect, poisoned status effect, Distance markers, Footsteps amplifier, Footsteps silencer, Homing missiles, Shrink ray, Growth ray, Armor piercing shots, Health swapping, Armor disabling effect, Convert armor to health, Shield disabled effect, Convert shields to health, Barrier disabling effect, Convert barriers into health, Convert barriers into explosives, Ult cancellation, Copy ability, Steal ult charge, ability that grants more XP per match, ability that grants less xp per match.

A silence like Hack basically does this, but better and with more consistency.
