I Suggested Someone Switch Heroes. The Entire Group of 5 Reported Me

This reporting system is asbolutely broken. It’s a virtual version of the Stazi, where people were wearing badges of honor for “fighting injustice” which resorted to spying and telling on members of society.

Now if a person gets a whif of the slightest negativety, they will file a report. If they are in a group, sometimes the entire group will out of mob mentality.

Anyone else find t his disturbing?

Nope, because it has happened to me many times, and I have never received any account action against me. While I don’t know the details of the report system, the system is smart enough to track problems and it takes several reports of multiple matches to be flagged for account action. Just keep calm and move along.

Don’t tell people what hero to play. Let them play what they’re most comfortable with.

Without knowing how you suggested they change, I can’t say whether you or they are being unreasonable.

If it’s in QP, that may be why (because it’s in QP).

If it’s in comp, depends on the hero, I guess.

If it was QP you deserved it but if it was comp as long as you weren’t being a douche about it it wasn’t warranted.

How did you suggest they swap players?

Delivery can be just as important as content.

A little context would be helpful, as without it I can’t really tell if the reports were justified or not.
Either way of you weren’t being a jerk or breaking any rules, I’m sure Blizz won’t punish you for no reason
So yea you have nothing to worry about unless you did something wrong

Did you actually get in trouble? Were you polite about asking them to switch? These are important questions.

There’s a difference between demanding someone swap, and suggesting

Well, the one thing I will say is that I greatly suspect we are not getting the whole story here.

Yeah Ive seen some people get really nasty about how they ask for people to swap characters.

I’ll admit, I frequently put out requests for different team comp, even in quickplay. But it’s generally phrased like

  • “We kind of need a shield tank, should I swap?” (I’m usually on a healer or a tank already.)
  • “I’d like to place this teleporter, but I can switch to DVA if moving that sniper is more important than shorter walks”
  • “I’m melting as Orisa is our Ana having problems that I’m not seeing?”

Of course, quite frequently, every other person on the team will choose to play DPS or defense characters that need shields on attack and I get snarkier and say early in the game “I can tank or heal, but cannot do both simultaneously, can someone flex?” which I follow with “Well, I think we will be slaughtered with this comp unless someone is an absolute god, so I guess I will pick one of my practice characters.”

The bad thing for me is that once I make that second declaration, I am going to finish that entire on my horrible “omg why do I suck so much at X” character cause it’s fun playing such characters in that I always see/learn new things.

Instead of telling anyone specific to switch (in comp), I usually say something general, like (true example):

“You guys think we have enough damage to push attack here on Anubis?”

(after team picked Widow, Hanzo and Ana on attack)

That usually makes at last one person switch to something more relevant.

Just report them for being toxic. You simply just made a suggestion and there is nothing wrong with that.

Thanks for all the responses guys. No action was taken against me, but was still concerned that 5 straight reports would red flag me or something. All 5 were DPS and I asked for a better comp, and no one responded to me (I typed it, so I know they could see it). After typing it a third way, they told me i was reported for abusive chat and “dictating how others should play”

The feeling still remains, that people group up together, troll an individual, coerce that person into getting mad, thus creating a justification for reporting. No action against me however I’ve seen this happen many times to me and others and overall just creates a toxic environment. Worst part is, the ones who trolled by simply picking horrible heroes, purposefully not healing, and so on hardly ever get in trouble because they arent actually typing anything in chat.

I’m glad Blizz is on top of it but overall I dont think the system makes OW a better place for people. It just makes people want to tell on one another thus creating more toxicity and not less.
