I’ve been a support player for most of my time in OW, but I occasionally like to play tank as well. When I play tank I’d like to think that I’m pretty decent at fighting against enemies.
However I absolutely suck at dps, I can’t win a 1v1 to save my life. I’m terrible at Hitscan characters like Widow, Ashe or Mr High Noon.
I want to get better at 1v1’s and Hitscan characters, but I’m just terrible at them. How would I go about improving at this? Just keep at it? That would probably mean losing a bunch though and that’s no fun ):
I think it always depends on the hero you are facing and the skill level. DPS can be tricky, because of how many different DPS exist and where you hero fall into the roaster.
Good 1v1 heroes in the DPS role are mostly Mei, Cassy (especally with the nade), 76, Reaper and other heroes who can heal, get out or have huge, sudden burst DPS.
Another point is that OW2 is still a team game. If you cant win 1v1s, stay by your team and protect them. Especially when you protect your supports, you will not lose a duel.
Hey! I felt right there with you! First season where I haven’t been silver in dps and made it as high as plat 1 using mostly Mei and Bastion! Usually diamond in support but my DPS has always been pretty bad.
I started practicing a lot in deathmatch. Mostly with Zen / Mercy, since if I can kill people with them I could surely do so with others without having to rely on others.
There are aim trainers and stuff out there, though I have found a few things really helped me.
Stay calm under pressure. Being able to stay calm and focus on aiming instead of overshooting my mark and barely missing helps a lot.
I started trying to look for unaware enemies, and it seriously helped me a lot. This video randomly popped up in my feed a while back but it was definitely insightful!
Being able to stay calm, look for targets that do not seem aware of you (or at least, do not believe you are going to shoot them) and practicing will all help you improve. Not anything drastic over night but those were a few things I started actively trying to do and it has helped me out. I hope it helps you too!
Edit: I know the video is a POV / advice for hanzo, but I think it can also apply for hitscan too.
Final edit I swear: I know you were looking for 1v1 tips and this doesn’t really help a whole lot with that so I apologize! But I think it can help you get better at picking targets / fights and in a roundabout way could help for 1v1s?
You can do aim practice in the workshop (code: JPYHG) and/or if you’re on PC, in Aim Lab (free game on Steam). Or you can play the 1v1 arena mode (code: TXCXX). There’s also plenty of helpful guides and high level streamers for each specific hero, and watching them can help you learn quite a lot as well.
Like mentioned above though, you don’t have to be good at 1v1s to win matches, playing with your team will almost always be the most effective strategy. Though if you want to practice to be an undefeatable god for those few 1v1 scenarios, you absolutely can.
I would argue most of arrge’s tips for hanzo arent beneficial itself.
Let alone hitscans, he is not a aimcoach.
Two things from his tips that do work are placing crosshair for strafers and letting them walk in, this is great for hanzo, but for hitscans its not the best option.
The other thing that works from him is acting like disengaging and rengaging shortly.
Apart from that everything else is meh and often not accurate.
Before giving any advices, do you have any image of what you should do to improve? I think everybody knows the answer, so you do . You don’t need help, you need to start acting.
Yeah, I totally understand that it isn’t 100% applicable, which was why I edited the post a bit. But there are definitely some tips there that work regardless of character, the disengaging / reengaging bit is part of the whole bit he was talking about for “unaware” enemies, and I have found that to be incredibly helpful even though I’m mostly playing bastion/Mei if I do play DPS.
Or at the very least, it has helped improve my own play
Most of iostux aim opinions were pretty bad in these early videos he believed aim trainers didnt help and stuff.
Now he himself has made a aimtrainer and advocates the dpo aim training method that aimtrainers have been touting for years.
Also this one sensitivity is a myth.
if your good with one sens you can adapt to most sens.
each sens has a advantage disadvantage etc.
Currently in aimtraining communities there are programs that let you train by step increasing or decreasing sens. as it actually helps with various kinds of aim and parts.
Yep, one of the best guides out there for good sens.
I’d disagree with a lot of em too but they’re not bad he explains why he thinks stuff and it’s very logical.
In that video, he doesn’t mention that so… this is just gaslighting. He may of in another video but has 0 to do with this vid.
Which he talks about. Ignore context much? It’s more reducing the time you need to adapt so you can focus on aiming not adapting.
Also, this method a) isnt’ his and b) is, as far as I know is the best method to work out a good sens for a person to practice aim. If you know a better method let us know as that is helpful.
Ok… unless you are playing at some extreme and like 10k+ edpi or 2k edpi this is basically useless to 99% of people learning to aim it’s more for people that already are good at aiming.
Also in said communities, they use the said method explained in the vid. lol
Aimtrainers are limited, good for mechanical but not that great for prediction.
spend time in the training area working on sensitivity settings for your hitscan. once you are comfortable with those settings (after practicing on the bots) go to UNRANKED and just practice practice practice.
you WILL lose many many games at first, DO NOT LET THIS GET YOU DOWN. watch your death cams, see what caused you to die, was it positioning? were your cooldown rotations off? did you take high ground? are you standing in the open?
take the game sense you have learned from tank and support, and apply it to dps many things are transferable, do not trickle, wait to group, off angles, etc.
point is, dont feel bad for being bad at a role. i asked for help on my support role the other day because i dont play that role at all.
when you have a game that was close (either a win or a lose) save the replay code and ask for a VOD review.
Oh boy…
Google aimlabs find your ideal sens. They demonstrate a tool that uses said method.
So a major aim trainer uses said method.
A lot of said youtubers you mention are professional coachs and part of said community
Least it was easy to prove you lie to make a point
I actually agreed that i don’t agree with a lot of his opinions. So I’m not really defending the dude but method in that vid.
Like he did an updated version of said vid… Terrible. He created a ton of drama too. As content creators go he’s eh… But that vid is good because it communicate one best methods out there to find a sens that is easy to learn on.
You seem like you have trouble separating your bias for the person from the method.
To a certain point yes, as I find it annoying when people crap on good advice because they are projecting some issue they have with a streamer that has nothing to do with said advice.
On the topic of nerves, iostux seems to have annoyed you to a point you’ll lie, gaslight and insult people that talk about him.
It must really get on your nerves that vid is one of the highest referenced vids on r/overwatchuniversity and it one of highest viewed vid when it comes down to overwatch and sens.
But we’re a little off topic at this but this does highlight you shouldn’t take all advice seriously as some people might be trying to push some agenda to a point they’ll lie to you.
