Like you’re just throwing 90% of the game away for no reason. I could get say why someone wouldn’t want to play the entire tank role at this point, but not why someone would want to throw away 40+ heroes
Always found one of the big appeals to OW is that whenever you’re about to get bored you randomly get in the mood to play someone you haven’t in a while. I was going to play Juno the other day, she got taken, I thought of going to someone else from my usual rotation but then for whatever reason I thought oh I haven’t played Baptiste in like half a year let’s give him a go. And it ended up being a really enjoyable match and I played a few more as bap after. I’m not great at bap, I’m not going to start maining him anytime soon, but me playing him every now and again still enhances the game, and when there like 20 heroes like him that I’ll play every now and again that really adds up.
Even as a ladder climbing strategy it doesn’t make sense
The game has 40 some heroes and there are around 15 that I’ll play somewhat regularly and only 1 that I never play at all. I just think I’d be bored as hell of this game and have left 5 years ago if I just picked mercy and held blue beam on people all match every match.
Of coursed I am a little bit biased here since my most played hero is echo so in a technically playing anybody qualifies as practicing for my main
tank is d.va for sure then ill rarely play reinhardt… havnt in a long while since i HARDLY play tank. the other cast… never play really. junkerqueen sometimes but man she sucks in 6v6 i tried a couple of days ago, also zarya but i havnt played her in over a year i think
dps is a bit bigger but not really. sombra and tracer are the ones i play the most atm. then i play widowmaker. after that not much really… sojourn sometimes. i tried freya but i really dont like her much. i play pharah from time to time and i havnt played ashe in a long time but im really proficient with her
support is just moira usually lol… then if i feel like playing something else i go ana. i dont think im the greatest ana, im more succesful with moira. i try the other supports once in a while like mercy, juno, kiriko and brigitte.
i played brigitte yesterday but man was it painful. 5 game losing streak then i won a very close game… almost lost. turned the game off and i even havnt played today
just right now i was playing marvel rivals. i even have a smaller cast on that game but hey i just got MVP with luna snow
The game was designed with the idea that people would treat the heroes as tools and swap throughout the match to use to best tool for the current job. Instead people ended up getting attached to specific tools, which is fine as long as they don’t blame game balance for their issues (they usually do).
Rankings normally filter out one-tricks and keep them where they belong. Like who wants a hammer main on their team whacking away at a screw just because they don’t want to use a screwdriver?
I’m not a one-trick, but I get why people do it. If they have a preferred character, why not simply play that one?
As for climbing the ladder, I think that comes a distant second to having fun. Even if, for argument’s sake, one-tricking is bad for climbing - what’s the point of someone climbing if he’s not having fun while doing it? It’s not like he’s going to put on his CV, “Oh yeah, and by the way - I’m top five hundred in Overwatch™. No big deal, mind you. Just one of the best freakin’ gamers out there. Hire me.”
Seriously, we get a thread like this every few days. The answer has always been and will always be that certain people enjoy certain things differently. You are not the world-standard of fun. Other people are different from you.
just read what people said five years ago when you made this exact same thread, nothing changed:
What’s the statistic for people who don’t finish games? Like 25%?
This isn’t a linear game, so it’s a little different, but the same logic applies- It’s just a videogame (A free-to-play one at that) so people are only going to invest in to it what they can and/or want to.
I’m personally not playing like, 60% of the roster and have never touched the Competitive mode because I just don’t care about those heroes and I don’t care about Rank Jpgs. I play this game once a week typically- I’m going to play what I like.
I say this with no hate in my body, but didn’t you say you stopped playing because Ana was in every game? Why not learn a hero in your role that makes Ana suffer so Ana mains can suffer as you have?
There are handful of T500 one-tricks. 99.9% of one-tricks are not T500. That’s why I said normally. These folks are the exception to the rule, and they’re mostly playing heroes that are more flexible by nature. Tracer, Doom, Ball etc are almost always going to work well in the right hands.
To clarify here: I’m not a “one trick” in the conventional sense.
Those who know me typically know me for Doomfist.
I actually have more time off Doomfist, than on Doomfist.
I always advocate to actually learn the other heroes from a first hand perspective, especially if your goal is to get better with with a different particular hero. Play these heroes into enemies playing hero, and see what they do to give you a hard time. Or play with team mates using your hero to see how it feels from this heroes POV to play with your hero.
Half the time I genuinely “flex” as a learning experience.
But the other half the time, when I really want to play, I play doom exclusively. This is the whole “I’d rather master 1 hero” thing encompassed. When I’m being serious, I’m using this specific hero and everything I have learned to make them work. I pull from a lot of diverse experience to do this. Learning how to play into your counters is an important element here imo.
As for Ana- my distaste for her is purely because I’m tired of seeing her every game. I win more often than I lose to Ana. I’m genuinely just tired of her.
OTPs are fine as long as they are exceptional at that character and have alternatives in case that character is unavailable.
The problem is when you get stubborn people wanting the game made easier because they aren’t as good as they thought and refuse to adjust. Those people are the ones complaining about things like being hard stuck, match making, bans, etc.
No offense, but most OTPs are literally throwing until you hit M+ when you actually have to get good or hold your ankles until you tumble back into plat.
because some people only like to play only as one hero. What isn’t there to get it? It’s not something deep or complex. Some people also only eat one flavor of ice cream. There’s nothing to get about that.
Brother if doomfist didn’t exist I would’ve stopped playing overwatch a while ago. I can barely get through support or dps games without just getting bored.
Though maybe I would’ve stuck to someone else and I’m just too spoiled on how fun doom is. Anytime I’m not playing doom, all I can think is “I could be playing a 100x more fun hero right now”.
It’s different here, though, because what flavor of ice cream someone chooses doesn’t affect the people around them. If they were in a competitive ice cream eating contest where their team was partially scored on flavor flexibility, it would be a problem.
Isn’t it down to preference? Remember that most people eat Ice Cream for enjoyement. Would you hang out with people that get mad at you if you don’t eat the flavor they picked for you? If somoene is playing only one hero and you feel it’s affecting you, would you rather they play a hero that they don’t like so that you feel better about yourself? Wouldn’t it defeat the purpose of the game (having fun) for that player?
Focus on what you can do for yourself, not what other people can do for you.
Most people also love to torture the people who work in ice cream. Trust me. I know. I was the poor sap standing at the counter, running between three different things at once while my manager shouted at me to clean the damn ceiling while i was busy refilling the soft serve machines and fielding phone calls from customers like “is your ice cream have milk in it” (real phone call from a real human being)
