I’m going to be getting some things off my chest, this a sort of personal and isn’t in the joking manner I usually use on the forums.
I play support. I’m a support main. I once mained Tracer but once I started going against people who were better than me, I felt that I was not good enough to continue playing her. I’ve tried playing tanks, other dps, snipers, junk, bastion, mei, etc… There was always a point where I felt that I was trash compared to the hero’s true mains.
Yesterday I went into comp and we needed a shield tank on defense. I told my team that I didn’t trust myself to solo tank and one guy who had already expressed that he wasn’t switching off Hanzo because “he wanted to mess up our game like people have messed up his” asked me how I couldn’t flex in season 9. This made me feel horrible because I have tried to practice tanks and dps but i’m just trash. I used to take Orisa into comp and feel confident but I’ve lost my skill with her.
Another situation that made me feel bad and really angry with myself is when, on attack, I picked Ana due to our two tanks and me usually being able to land my shots/dart easily even before the buff. However, One guy asked for another healer instead and I just switched because I noticed that earlier in the week I missed some shots and darts that I normally would never miss. I wasn’t confident enough to tell him to let me try and I didn’t want to be the reason we lost because I was a trash Ana with a golden gun that used to mean something.
I’ve given up trying to dps or tank because I know I’m trash. This is why I’m going to support people and allow them to impact the game better than I can. Next season I’m going to devote my competitive career to helping people do what I can’t and fear I never will be able to do.

Don’t be so down on yourself. I actually play pretty similarly to you in that I am a support main who prefers to only play support including Symmetra. I will flex to tank if needed but I loathe playing DPS at my rank, I don’t really like those heroes and know I can’t compete with people who play them a lot. I’ve always played healers in other games and it’s what I enjoy the most and am best at, nothing wrong with that.
If you’re pushed into a role you’re not comfortable with try to have a good attitude about it you might actually surprise yourself and do well! This has happened to me and it feels great, once I played Reaper in comp and nearly got a 20 player kill streak I was shocked lol. But if you don’t play well at least you tried and know you were willing to help the team, like I said don’t worry and have fun no matter what role you play ^.^

Thanks. I’m trying, I love how the support class is so diverse so I have the possibility to do a variety of things so that my teammates can excel.
Hey, don’t be so harsh to yourself.
I main support, but I always flex if needed. Thing is, you can only main some heroes at the level you’re. I’m a plat player and I know that my Mercy and Moira are almost a high plat or low diamond level (since I’ve already played even on high diamond/low masters level and didn’t struggle much). But sometimes I don’t need to play at my best, you know what I mean.
You can try to flex or try something new and improve your ability, just warn your team whenever you’re not comfortable.
Sometimes I play main tank or off tank with no hesitation and sometimes I just say on team chat “I’m not comfortable playing hero X, can I play X?”
We all have bad and good days, so you shouldn’t labe yourself trash because of a bad day.
Stick to what you’re good at, sounds like you do your job well. You can practice heroes in quick play if you want to branch out, but in comp, I can completely understand playing to you strengths. Heck, the pros play like 3 heroes, and all in one category.
Otherwise, don’t feel to bad about it, and good luck!
Many of us have a hard skill ceiling for certain heroes. Not all of us are gifted with excellent hand eye coordination for tracking(reason I am a trash soldier 76 and zarya) so when you reach a certain mmr or rank that ceiling will hit you hard. Give every hero a try maybe projectiles are your thing try junk and phara maybe predicting shots is your skill.
Play what you feel good playing also we needs support mains i hope in the future you get better games
It’s fine to main a role, as long as you can play multiple heroes in that role.
I’m a flex player, but I actually really enjoy playing supports a lot. Ana was my main for a really long time, and I’ve played a lot of Mercy and Zenyatta too. I’m currently maining Brigitte and Moira, so yeah, I definitely still prefer supports over most other categories.
I would say just continue playing whoever you wanna play and not let others pressure you into a role you’re not comfortable with. I don’t play comp, nor do I use voice chat, so I’ve never felt that type of pressure before, but if playing supports is what you enjoy and feel that you’re good at, continue playing supports! This is a game, it’s supposed to be fun, so please by all means, have fun with it
You shouldn’t be so hard on yourself, for some people there’s some just roles that don’t click with them. You shouldn’t feel guilty about playing support either.
(Some) Supports might not need the mechanical skill that a DPS player needs, but they require very strong game sense, awareness, and good positioning. I would say at higher ranks, the team with the better tank and support players is what determines the outcome, and not so much the dps.
I’m sorry you had an off game as Ana, I’ve had games as her where I couldn’t hit anything either, but with more practice you can be more consistent with her. Perhaps in a few months you can revisit playing tanks and dps once you’ve gotten a good grasp on a few support characters.
I grow weary of the ‘supports are subhuman’ nonsense I read on these forums. OP, you are human. Your worth is equal to that of any person in this game. Keep playing and being your best self.
As you rank up it’s expected to get matched with better players. You shouldn’t get discouraged and you should learn from what these players have did to succed playing as X.
Sometimes you just have a really bad day and you should wait it out.
I still wonder how am i so trash with Hanzo after hundreds of hours playing him, but sometimes it just clicks.
my zen winrate went from <30% to 53% this season
everyone has awful days, but you canonly improve by playing more and more
Confidence issues can be overcome with a good amount of practice and support from friends.
If you feel that you are doing something wrong, look to a pro player, and compare your and their play to see if you need to do something differently.
If you feel that your aim is off or not good enough, I’d recommend taking a look at iostux’s aim coaching videos as he covers many of the fundamentals and other things as well such as accepting inconsistency and so on.
Never give up on yourself. You can and will get there eventually.
This is why flexing is important. Comparatively, I would never call myself a Zenyatta main, or even a Soldier 76 main, but if people are more comfortable on my role, as a tank, then on heroes like this, I tend to trust them. You don’t need to be better than a full time tank main if you’re gonna play tank, or a full time DPS main if you’re going to play DPS, you just need to be decent enough to allow the hard mains/one tricks to preform.
P.S. Don’t compare your performance on a specific hero to people who main that specific hero, just ask yourself if you’re comfortable on them. When learning or uncomfortable only compete with yourself at your best.
