And of course I get a regular non event gold skin…
This might be a good time for everyone for me to repost this…
Loot Box Distribution Rules
- The rate of rarity distribution for Loot Boxes (during no seasonal event) are a minimum 3 Common (White) and 1 Rare (Blue) item, then approximately 1-out-of-5 loot boxes will replace one item with at least one Epic (Purple) item, and 1-out-13 loot boxes will replace one item with one Legendary (Gold) item. It is possible to get more than one Epic or Legendary in any given loot box but it is extremely rare.
- During a Seasonal Event, seasonal marked items will appear more frequently with a minimum of one seasonal item appearing in any Loot Box and the odds of getting Seasonal Epic and Legendary items are improved from that of standard loot box items.
- On occasion, a Rare, Epic, or Legendary item will be replaced with Gold Currency. Gold Currency can be used to purchase any items (except Player Icons) from the Standard Loot Box distribution and any items that is currently available in an active Seasonal Event. You will get 50 Gold for Rare drops, 150 Gold for Epic Drops and 500 Gold for Legendary Drops.
- Loot Box contents are determined at the time the Loot Box is earned or paid for and not when the Loot Box is opened. The contents takes into account of the player’s current inventory for all items in the standard loot box distribution and seperately for any seasonal event in progress, but only issues items based on the rarity distribution. You cannot hoard loot boxes to earn new items for upcoming content releases such as a new hero.
- If a player collect all possible Standard Distribution loot box items at a certain rarity or all items of a Seasonal Event currently in progress, they will start to earn duplicates again. Here are a few possible scenarios:
- If a player has collected all possible standard Commons from the Standard Loot Box distribution and there is no seasonal event running, they will start to earn duplicates again for any Common items issued. The Loot Box does not instantly provide any higher rank items by default nor will it issue any seasonal items when no seasonal event is running.
- If a player has collected all possible standard Commons from the Standard Loot Box distribution but there is a seasonal event running and they have not collected all possible commons from that seasonal distribution, they will not start to earn duplicates again for any Common items but any Common Items will be seasonal items until all possible Seasonal Common items for that Seasonal Event are earned.
- If a player has not yet collected all possible standard Commons from the Standard Loot Box distribution but has collected all possible Seasonal Commons from a seasonal event that is currently in progress, then they may start seeing duplicates on occasion. This is because a Seasonal Loot Box must contain at least one item from that Seasonal event which is not affected by rarity distribution.
- If a player unlocks an item with gold currency before opening any unopened Loot Boxes, they may receive duplicates to the item they just unlocked.
- A Golden Loot Box is guaranteed to contain at least one Legendary item, however it is not restricted otherwise. An Anniversary Event Legendary Loot Box will contain one Anniversary Event item based on your current inventory but it may not be that Legendary Item. If you purchase the 50 Loot Box pack with the bonus Anniversary Legendary loot box, the items in that Legendary Loot Box will be determined NOT accounting for the 50 other Loot Boxes (and the 50 boxes will not account for the Legendary Loot Box either). This makes it possible where the guaranteed Legendary Item is a duplicate!
- Anniversary Event Loot Boxes now pool from all current existing event loot box distribution and the standard loot box distribution. Please note, the Overwatch Anniversary Event is running at this time. At least one Anniversary Event item will appear in each Anniversary Loot Box. For the three remaining slots any seasonal event drop or standard item drop will be selected PRIOR to rarity and item selection. Because of this, if you have collected all possible items of any rarity of any event or the standard Loot Box Distribution, there is a chance to earn duplicates. This chance will increase the more complete your collection of loot box items are even if you do not have all possible items for any rarity of any event (or standard loot box distribution).
I dont care about these stupid rules. 95% of this community agrees that event boxes should not have regular skins in them. And I say 95% because of all the past posts over the years with people agreeing but of course you got blizzard being stupid as always
Is there an empirical study on this? All joking aside, it still comes down to the fact Loot Boxes is the primary form of recurring revenue to Blizzard for those who play this game.
I would observe the complaints about this have dissipated over the years. This is because most of us already have everything in the standard loot box distribution after the first one or two years of playing.
“I got Sugarplum Mercy!”
“I got Jiangxi Mei!”
“I got Toxic Roadhog!”
“…I got a rock.”
Well there is no study but I made posts in the past on another account that had close to 800 up votes about a year ago to a year and a half ago agreeing with me on this.
And this is stupid. The old blizzard was not a money hungry company. They only want to line their pockets and make the stock holders happy. I mean this game has made over a billion dollars from everyone that has bought this game. And then they want more money for loot boxes if you cant grind them out. Stupid IMO. This new blizzard doesnt listen to anyone. You can have 99% of the people in agreement on a change on the forums, reddit, twitter, and for some dumb reason the handful of devs think they know better. That is them just being stupid because then they go and have to change stuff later on because they cant balance a game.
Why wouldn’t you want to grind out loot boxes? You earn them by playing the game, which I imagine is what you bought the game to do.

Wyoming, mind i ask:
1, Is the daily loot box from tank/support being a regular lootbox during events is intentional?
2, Can we improve how the loot box is acquired? Like for example -
a, DPS can earn their daily lootbox from just playing DPS, instead being forced to q as tank/support?
b, How about having the ‘arcade mode only’ weekly boxes also factor in games in Quick Play and Competitive Play, just like how the weekly challenge works?
c, Can we please have 2 losses or even 3 losses count as 1 point towards the weekly box? Combating losing streak is bad enough, and ‘lose doesn’t count’ just makes that losing streak even harder to bear.
3, Specific Arcade Mode Loot boxes. I’m not a great player with great aiming skill nor positional awareness, so having that lootbox attached on specific arcade mode like ‘get a win in FFA Deathmatch’ just becomes an almost impossible task for me. Granted i know this is an incentive to get people playing these games, but it kinda feels bad that ‘oh great, that’s a lootbox that i can possibly never get’. Any plans to improve/address this?
Well, that’s not very cash money.
I have an opportunity to test this rule as I do not have all Echo Legendaries yet. This was something the development team wanted to fix in the past, but I don’t know if they have done it yet or not. So I will be throwing in $50 to get a set of boxes to see if this is still a thing. Note I won’t necessarily be able to confirm it if I don’t get a duplicate.
First free loot box got both new Zen and Mercy legendary. Second loot box was Echo butterfly legendary.
Me too. It’s the way of the road.
If you look at it as the anniversary event is all the events. You did get an event skin.
If it helps, I bought three of the 50 box packs last year, and none of my golden loot boxes had a skin that was also in any of those 50 bundles (AKA no duped legendaries)
Completely disagree, you know that overwatch is a completely non p2w game? So that’s why there’s loot boxes. I agree in this case with them, because otherwise the game would be way worse
… I’d be interested to see this post.
800 likes is a LOT… sounds a bit hyperbolic.
