I need a fat explanation

On this damn story. Because I am so confused about what is talon and what is blackwatch and where does overwatch fit into this??¿ I’m just so lost <: who betrayed who ? Was this person is overwatch but now he’s not and why?¿

blackwatch is an evil sub division of overwatch and reaper joined talon

Blackwatch was the black ops section of Overwatch, Jason Bourne kinda sh*t.
Talon is a criminal secret society kinda thing.

[SPOILERS AHOY]

Overwatch is a peacekeeping-like organization. Blackwatch is the black ops wing of it, so they do covert / dangerous / not strictly legal missions. Think of something kind of between the Navy Seals and a Mission Impossible crew… they are working for Overwatch, and in some ways doing its dirty work, yet technically independent enough from it that if the mission goes badly, OW can, in theory, disavow them. But ideally, Blackwatch stays secret, and the public never is really supposed to know it exists.

Talon is a terrorist organization and are The Baddies. If you read the Retribution comic, it explains the runup to this PVE event–Talon was responsible for the bombing of an Overwatch facility that critically wounded one of Reyes’ friends.

The guy that the Blackwatch team goes in to capture is a high-powered figure in Talon, who maintains a front of being a respectable businessman. The team was supposed to take him alive. When Reyes kills him, it turns a quiet, undercover mission into a loud, unmissable assault that almost kills the team, exposes Blackwatch as A Thing That Exists, and puts Overwatch into disrepute.

It hasn’t been 100% explained how, but both Reyes (Reaper) and Moira end up joining Talon–Reyes because he’s bitter at Overwatch and Moira because she kind of doesn’t care who she works for if they fund her research, and the fewer ethical constraints, the better.

Okay see that’s where I got confused. I was mixing blackwatch and talon. They’re completely different things. Why did reaper join talon??

Blackwatch wasn’t evil, they just did all the missions the public couldn’t know about.

AhHHHHHHhhHH I SEEEEEEEE. The thing that got me confused was that I was mixing talon and blackwatch I thought they were kind of the same thing but I see that they’re different… so moira was part of blackwatch but she joined talon because they let her do research and fund her studies without restrictions ? (Basically) and reaper joined talon… because ?¿

Blizzard has been a little bit cagey so far about filling in the blanks in the lore between Uprising / Retribution and the Reaper we know from the main maps. Somewhere in between there, Reyes becomes Reaper (with his full turns-into-mist and gets all growly and sinister thing) and joins Talon, and it seems to be a mix of:

a) Getting super disillusioned with Overwatch as an organization,

b) Having some kind of specific falling out with Jack Morrison (Soldier:76), and perhaps also with Ana Amari;

c) Undergoing whatever physical transformation turns him into Reaper, seemingly due to Moira’s work on him, seemingly after a horrific injury of some sort.

There are still details we don’t know, but that’s what I understand the gist of the lore to be.

Ah I see. That makes a lot more sense now. I also did just Google it and literally read a novel about it lmao. What about mccree ? Does he just like leave blackwatch and goes into his own path like genji?

that is true, honestly they are more like the darkside of overwatch they are not evil but they are doing things that they dont want people to know about which is kinda shady but they are not evil

It’s another detail we don’t really have a lot of story on. McCree used to be part of the Deadlock Gang (referenced on the Route 66 map), but got drafted into Blackwatch in a “you can work for us or go to prison” kind of arrangement. He fit in there for a while, and it’s always been hinted that he and Reyes fell out when Reyes turned all Reaper-y. This event shows how that started: McCree really resented how Reyes trashed the mission and risked everyone’s life.

Technically, by the time the “main story” (the PVP maps) starts, Overwatch has been disbanded, and everyone kind of went off to do their own thing. They’re only back together because Winston recently recalled them (watch the Recall cinematic). McCree didn’t side with Reyes/Moira, and so he didn’t join Talon, but doesn’t seem to be super invested in Overwatch (not that Overwatch was around for very much longer). Here’s what his “story” on his official hero page says:

But as Overwatch’s influence waned, rogue elements within Blackwatch sought to bring down the organization and turn it to their own ends. Wanting no part of the infighting, McCree set off alone and went underground.

He resurfaced several years later as a gunslinger for hire. But while McCree’s talents are sought after by parties great and small, he fights only for causes he believes are just.
