I get cozy with a controller in some games.
I get serious with keyboard and mouse in other games.
(I also have a mouse that has 12 buttons on the side.)
When I set some keybinds to my controller, and other keybinds to my mouse, the game accepts it! I’ve played since earlier Overwatch 1, and the game has always accepted it. This is not common in other FPS games I’ve played. There are no HUD issues or UI issues in Overwatch at all; it lets me map the buttons wherever I like, and provides a smooth experience.
I know I am in a tiny minority of players who play this way, but to offer a brief explanation of why I got into it: I think the mouse is optimal for aim (over an analog stick), and I think the analog stick is optimal for movement.
The mouse is simply faster than an analog stick at changing directions while aiming. It moves instantly, while the analog stick has to pass through the centre before it moves to the opposite side, which is less efficient. I don’t think there is a single character in the game that benefits from being forced to change their aim more slowly.
For movement, however, the analog stick provides 360-degree control and speed variation, while WASD offers no speed control and only 8-directions. This allows you to track targets precisely with the mouse (including down scope) while moving precisely at any speed and in any direction with the stick. It also feels more intuitive and in-control to use both vertical and horizontal movement abilities.
There is a major drawback to using an analog stick for movement. Many characters and playstyles rely on the A-D-A-D dance, moving side-to-side very rapidly to avoid enemy fire. This is not possible because, again, the analog stick has to pass through the centre before it moves to the opposite side. Rapid changes in movement are impossible, and characters and playstyles relying on this are at a disadvantage moving with the analog stick.
In my opinion, the character that most benefits from controller-mouse is Wrecking Ball. His hitscan gun benefits greatly from a mouse’s precise aim, and his chained and aerial movement benefit from the precision and fluidity offered by the analog stick. The A-D-A-D dance is useless, as you are so large that it doesn’t make much difference. Playing as ball with controller-mouse is more than just viable, it is downright fun and rewarding to grapple and throw yourself precisely at the enemy backline, stomp, pick off a weaker target with precise mouse-aimed gunshots, and roll away. It honestly feels like hamster was made for controller-mouse.
For the curious, my jump is set to the main mouse side button, and melee and crouch are next to it. In other words, it feels like playing with a controller that has the precision aim of a mouse.
To conclude, I guess, big thanks to the devs for allowing me to play and love the game in this janky way.
