I don’t really talk about gameplaywise, more about character wise.
The way they are portrayed somewhat broken in their own twisted way.
Mysterious, insane, mad, angry, disappointed.
I think these kind of characters always interesting, in every different fiction.
I say it often, but I love characters like Orisa and Echo because (and at least for OW1 Orisa) they have this whimsical and curious perception of everything. Everything is a new experience, a new face, a new voice, a new place; it’s genuinely sweet. The wonder that is instilled in me, as though seeing the world through a new set of eyes, is a trait I greatly favor.
Ramattra is a hero and I hope he lays waste to all who oppose him to save his people.
However it’s far more likely that he could save his people if he followed Zens path. If Zen can achieve total transcendence like Aurora perhaps they can make a new wave of sapient omnics.
Sigma is very interesting. He’s the most harmless person who can destroy the world on a whim.
Moira is fascinating. She needs her own arc. Let’s just get to a point where she is the real villain, manipulating all the people who think they are in charge.
I think the Australian heroes and their culture after the ominous nuclear fallout is very cool and I definitely want to learn more about it.
I like characters who are broken by the very thing that made them heroes.
No better example than Jack Morrison, who sold his soul and became the very thing he despises and doesn’t realize it outside a general depression.
Two face in " The Dark Knight" types
I also adore tragic optimists like Winston, one of the saddest stories in Overwatch about a science experiment that never should have occurred, which made a being who, when his creator died, has to cling on to an unrealistically optimistic view of a bad organization in order to find something he belongs to because he knows he will never get full acceptance by humans OR traditional apes, so he uses Overwatch to fill his need for a family.
I like characters like junker queen and ramattra, who have completely come to terms with what they are. Characters that have already completed their story arcs are more interesting than characters who haven’t imo. I don’t want to watch someone struggle with their feelings, I want to watch a fully-realized badass tearing it up on the battlefield.
As far as the feeling they give I definitely agree. Seeing Reaper in the first Overwatch cinematic was what made me want to play the game. But sadly Blizzard won’t actually let characters go even remotely dark.
I’m not sure I’m allowed to say. Awhile back I got scolded by the forums police.
Well even then they didn’t really child it down very well. Both the design and the playerbase aren’t very child friendly at all. Especially now that Blizzard is supporting streamers. No kid should watch XQC.
I think Blizzard just doesn’t known how to advertise mature themes. Even with Wow their ads look so cheesy.
I like characters who aren’t your typical “hero” or stereotype. Yes, Reyes is your typical “edge lord”, but he also has underlying issues that make him that way.
I like the inclusion of personalities that aren’t normal. It shows that we’re growing as a society (kinda) to accept people who don’t fit a specific mold. We still have a way to go but it’s refreshing to see non generic characters and personality.
