D. Va has some similarities with Samus Aran from the Metroid series.
D va’s mech is like Samus’s Power Suit. Once destroyed, they become the following.
Baby D va is like Zero Suit Samus. They both have a pistol they use for defense.
It kinda makes me wonder if D. Va’s inspiration partly came from Metroid. I honestly wouldn’t be suprised if it was.
Thats why I called her zero suit d.va during year 1. I tried pushing for it but baby d.va became the dominant force for god knows why
I honestly like Zero Suit Dva better than baby dva, at least i’m not alone having realized it lol
well for one, zero suit is two words, using z which is barely even typed often, and baby is just simple, so, typing-wise and spoken-wise it makes sense
for meme value, i still do like baby dva, anyway, even though i don’t hate zero suit dva
i mean, she literally pops out of the egg and you have to smash the yolk, like, hello
I also used to call her zero suit D.Va for a while, but eventually I just hopped on the baby D.Va bandwagon with everyone else.
huh, that’s fascinating, on the topic though, i called her out of mech version mini.
so it wen’t something like “kill the mini”

Saying kill the baby is more fun than kill the zero suit though. Especially when other people are close enough to hear

Ill admit im on the baby D.va bandwagon but only because its so quick and easy to say in ingame and regular conversation
Yeah, that’s the boat I was in. I believe the three that I heard before baby D.Va just became the go-to were zero suit D.Va, baby D.Va, and pilot D.Va, and out of those three, baby D.Va was just the easiest to say. Zero suit D.Va is cool for the reference, but in actual callouts, it just doesn’t flow off the tongue easily for me. Baby D.Va is quick and flows off the tongue. All three were good, though. I was personally partial to pilot D.Va, but baby D.Va was quicker.

I see what you mean. I didn’t know pilot dva was another way of saying baby dva lol.
Personally, I feel calling her “Hana” makes the most sense. And its short/one word (most other names are 2 or more). But, Baby D.Va seems to be what is most common, already, so its what most people default to, now.

It’s possible, but I’m pretty certain that her main inspiration came from the anime “Neon Genesis Evangelion”. The similarities are striking:
- She’s apart of a team of pilots who use mechs called “MEKAS” to defend the mainland from a threat. (The characters of the show are also part of a team of pilots who use mechs called “Evangelion” to defend the mainland from a threat.)
- South Korea is under constant attack by onmics called “gwishin” who rise from the sea. (Japan is under constant attack by machines called “Angels” who also rise predominately from the sea in the anime).
- The “gwishin” are capable of learning, often reconfiguring themselves in a different form and appearing with new weapons and capabilities. (The “angels” of Evangelion do this exact same thing, and are described as being able to think.)
Those are a few examples. I’m sure that Neon Genesis Evangelion isn’t the only inspiration for D.va, but if you’ve ever seen the anime it’s very easy to put two and two together.
Faster and easier to say.
