I remained silent, not only because uwu first tiiiiime, but also because I couldn’t understand a word the teammates were saying, because of their thick accents.
The first round, Paris defense, went well, the enemy scored 1 point and 1/3. I really played Mercy well, with sumperjumps that stalled the point and all.
Then the attacks begins, and we struggle for 3 minutes against a bunker.
It is then that I finally understand something in the voice chat : “get out Merrrcy, you suck”.
OK then.
We somehow get a pick on the enemy, and 4 seconds away from losing, we get on the point, all while the team screeches “HIL MI MERRRCIII” and I think about how hard I’m gonna report them.
We then run on Point B, and I actually couldn’t hear the characters anymore because of “MMMEEEEeEEeERRRЯrRRЯRCIIIIIIIII!!!Ii!I”.
But then, we win !
“ayayayayayayayayayayaya”
“Good job boyz !”
“Get tf out of this game mercy, go play Minecraft”
Using voice chat always leads to my worst experiences with this game. I get plenty of hate mail for not using it, but that just show I wouldn’t have had a good time with it anyway.
This definitely isn’t the norm, which makes me sad that you had to deal with this.
Voicechat can be so crucial in competitive, so if you ever feel comfortable again please do join! The second people start saying stuff like that, that’s when you graciously leave VC because you know they’re not worth your time and keep playing Mercy! There is always a mute / report button, and I urge you to use it, because communication is key and you can be missing some really fun times! ((Like I had a guy (while not in competetive) do a Junkrat impression all game, among other hilarious stuff that don’t quite stick out in my mind))
I bowed out of voice due to a similar issue (Except it was with Ana some time after she got gutted.) Don’t let anyone tell you any different. You can actually get benefits out of not using it due to hearing your environment better.
However, I’m not gonna tell you to never go back. I decided to come back to VC after quite a while of not using it. I ended up playing the one of the best and my favorite game of my Overwatch time by going back in for a game. I tell the story SO FREAKING MUCH because it was truly what I felt Overwatch is. It’s honestly the only thing that keeps me coming back. In most games, you would have thought it to be a “troll game,” so this isn’t one of those “Everyone’s performing at maximum capability” ones. Like, we were solo tank and heals on a 2CP map. BUT IT ALL WORKED OUT!
Personal experience: It doesn’t happen every game, but when it does happen it’s very memorable. There’s good and bad, but it’s usually the bad that really stands out and sticks with you. With that said, I have had enough Mercy-specific abuse to say that you must be really lucky if it almost never, ever, ever happens to you.
Also, I don’t blame anyone for not using voice chat because of the way people behave in it.
I’ve had good experiences but if you join voice chat only to hear your teammates and don’t actually talk I think it makes things worse because it makes it easier for them to “target” you because you can’t defend yourself properly or something.
From my experience in ranked I was always the first one pointed at when something went wrong and If I tried to type in anything on text chat people would just either ignore me or team up against me on an argument.
Some people will always try to put the blame on others and will never take a loss as their own fault, it’s sad but true, something I’m not sure if can even be directly stopped in a team based game. People like having control of their things and sometimes have different ideas on how to win and what each person should be doing so disagreements happen very often.
Though I would be lying if I said I never had nice teammates that kept being nice even through the worst losses.
I stopped using voice chat because their shrieking bullsh!t was distracting me from my game. They want callouts, there’s a communication wheel for heal needs/ult status.
And if you can’t hear the Reaper flanking behind you or see the Discorded target bobbing on your screen with a purple orb without someone telling you then you need to improve your awareness.
(…not like callouts help, when I told a team SIX TIMES to watch out for the Reaper that kept decimating us and they still didn’t do sh!t about him. I shouldn’t be doing the DPS’ job for them as a tank, dammit.)
Nah this is absolutely how every third game is for a low rated Mercy player on EU servers.
Bought an expensive mic just for overwatch, I don’t even auto join voice anymore because of this.
This is a big enough problem that I don’t initially talk in VC. I join and listen and if anybody is actually trying to be helpful and the atmosphere is semi-reasonable, i’ll participate.
As soon as I see or hear the first sign of toxic, I just leave chat. I’ve wasted too much of my own time being angry and retaliating for peoples stupid comments. Learning (slowly) that it’s just not worth it.
