I hate when I’m playing really well with a character, but then someone on the enemy team decides to copy me and play my hero as well. Why do people do that? Not once in my life have I ever thought “Dam, this Symmetra is giving us problems. Let me play her too… because well… if it works for him, it can work for me too.”
Usually happens with Ana. If I notice their team is having lots of sustain and synergy then I look at our Lucio-Mercy I might ask for an Ana if we’re struggling with healing
So what if they pick the same hero, there’s no rule in the game stating that the enemy can’t pick the same hero your playing. You’re not special, just another person playing overwatch.
But why tho…
I have 1000 hours on Mei, and as she’s meta at the mo, when I’m doing well they switch to Mei all the time. What they don’t realise is A) She’s only meta in teams with OWL level cordination otherwise at every other rank she’s underpowered and B) She takes practice to get good with. They nearly always switch off her after 2 or 3 deaths. Yes it annoys me too, it’s like ‘find your own hero’.
Hey, take it from me, a reaper main…treat it like an honor. You just pissed that guy off so much that he’s at the point where he’s tilted, and he’s like “OH YEAH I CAN PLAY THAT TOO” that’s not how all of them are, but quite a few of them.
I think it’s really dependent on the hero so don’t take it personally that they are copying your hero.
Sometimes the best counter to a hero is themselves like widow or mei
tfw you dupe an enemy healer and get gold healing as echo
Some heroes copy-pick do make sense (and are actually more of a mirror-pick). Like any hero who’s good at countering themselves:
Supports who has critical abilities, like Mercy (revive, dmg boost), Ana (ult, nade), Zen (discord orb) or Baptist (ImmoF). Having access to such abilities will help you “re-balance” the ones of their counterpart.
To some extent, this applies to some tanks, like Reinhard and Zarya. Unless these two are in pair, you should be fine with whatever tank you are currently playing.
On the DPS side, Widow is probably the only hero you’d actually want to mirror-pick (provided you are confident in you ability to out-wit the other widow).
Sym mirror-pick makes sense due to teleport. It is dependent on the map and the phase of a match you’re in, however. But gaining distance with TP when the enemy team do does “counter” their TP by having one of your own.
Solely because of Bob, Ashe is susceptible for a mirror-pick too.
Also based solely on ult, you may want to mirror-pick Echo (the irony, considering her ult is Duplicate).
Other heroes are not very worthy of a mirror-pick as they are more conditional to other heroes than themselves… Well, unless both team are almost, if not completely, mirroring each other already.
The most nonsensical copy-picks I’ve seen where from players who were definitely jaded of being trampled by the original hero pick while completely ignoring the synergy around the latter. Some comes to a copy-pick simple because they think they can be better (and humiliated you) with your pick. Especially if they think the pick us a “unskilled hero”. I’ve never see so many copy-pick when I used to play with Junkrat.
As a side note, I’d like to make a distinction when I say copy-pick to a mirror-pick:
- A copy-pick is a hero pick only for the sake of copying another player’s pick, regardless of what’s happening in the match.
- A mirror-pick is defined by a situation or condition shared among both teams that forces them to have the same pick regardless of the other team’s picks. It can be because of the current meta, or a hero’s popularity, or both players are trying to achieve the same thing and need the same hero to do so. For example, this happens when both team has a Rein and a Zarya (bc the meta), or snipers, or need AoE healing, and so on. The pick basically reflects the situation that needs to be addressed by both team.
It doesn’t bother me in this game.
In online fighting games though? What an a-hole.
Nothing is more stressful than realizing that someone on the enemy team swapped to Widowmaker and now there are two of you.
I like when it’s my turn to be on the team that rolls and the enemy tanks eventually switch to Orisa because that’s what they’re being rolled by…they don’t usually stay though lol
Whenever that happens I get happy because I feel like I managed to be impactful enough to make them frustrated.
I mean, if they pick the same hero as you, then just flex on them and show them who’s the best
Had this happen to me recently in competitive classic. Tracer on the enemy team was an absolute menace. Hard to read, popped up out of nowhere, and consistently kept us distracted. Well, it’s the final round (Illios lighthouse) and we manage taking point after a brief fight, enemy was disorganized. And here I am, Moira, checking our positions and hoping we’ll get through their next few pushes, when what do I flipping see, but another Moira… trying to dive me… yep, the truly difficult to deal with Tracer… switched to dps Moira…
Maybe she threw?
It really is what we call a “P’ing match”. between two players. I get it too, and often.
I play widow and then suddenly, someone else wants to play widow on the other team, as well as other heroes that I play as. They see me in a Gold portrait and think they have to heckle me the entire game, just being out on a personal vendetta, to “gauge their skills”.
There’s a million and one reasons to mirror a hero pick. More often then not it is because mirroring a hero is a form of countering them but only IF you are better. Some hero’s counters also sometimes are themselves.
For example. I am a really good Hog player but I play a ton of tanks and say I notice the enemy team’s Hog is getting a lot of value and my team isnt pressuring him. Instead of trying to handle him with a sub-par hero I will mirror that Hog to counter.
there’s also the ego driven “anything you can play, I can play better”.
I can’t tell you how many times the enemy echo would copy my Pharah but continuously loss the air dual with me. like after the third time they would waist their ult would think to copy something else.
Well typically I will always do it when I feel like a worse player is beating me, as Im definitely a bit too proud. Especially if its like widow or something, Ill switch and make their life terrible for catharsis.
But from a balance standpoint its why most owl games can end up as mirror matches, if youre playing the same hero it becomes not a hero matchup but a skill matchup.
I love when this happens, it’s super fun. I notice it happening a LOT with ball players. If one hammond is doing good someone on the other team will eventually switch to ball for some reason.
When someone switches to someone i’m using at the time I doubt it’s because i’m playing that hero, but I do like getting mid-game mirror matches with them to determine whose the better.
