In the year that I’ve been playing Overwatch, I’ve never done a (backcap). Then, on Eichenwald Attack, where the defenders weren’t paying attention on last point, I sneak in as Sombra and push it the last <2 meters and got the win.
I’ve seen BACKCAPS many times before. Teammates have done them, the enemy team have done them (many times…), I’ve seen streamers do them too.
But I didn’t know it’s just so…
Yeah, it was an… interesting one. I think since they were constantly winning the fight from the high ground, they lost track of the fact that I’d already walked past it without dying.
I’ve seen that happen on Gibraltar a lot actually. Usually when the “approaching the checkpoint” warning sounds start, everyone goes back and resolves it, but this time I think they were too far forward and without mobile heroes to get there when they heard it, hence the Bastion almost getting in position to shoot me at the last second.
It means when the enemy doesn’t pay attention to the point (Payload, usually.), and someone sneaks behind them and pushes the point the rest of the way to the checkpoint.
To add some specificity, the term came from a professional match where one team (Cloud 9, or “C9”) won the fight over a control point but lost the round anyway, because they left the control point to chase kills instead of capturing the objective. They then repeated the same mistake minutes later, so their team name was immortalized as the name of the mistake.
Since then, it’s basically been expanded to refer to anytime a team loses an objective when they had people alive to contest it.
Just playing sombra by itself should be a crime, I swear to god nothing is more annoying than us winning and then they just switch to sombra and try to C9 like literally if you are going to lose lose with some dignity instead of doing that cheese pathetic tactic
Happened to me a few times but the best one was when I was Mercy and I snuck around to the payload while both enemy and my other team mates were fighting near the spawn. I just hid behind the payload expecting someone to find me but I managed to push it a fair way (it was halfway between spawn and final points) to Victory.
“Cloud 9” is the name of the contenders? team that lost because of a back-cap. Shortened to C9 for a team that chases kills and allows the point/payload to be capped/pushed without realizing.
You gotta use the reply function… I checked that post for replies and didn’t see this there.
I was playing Sombra for an entire round… and was pretty much the team carry for that game. You’d think the enemy would realize that the Sombra they were trying to hard focus hasn’t been seen in awhile…
But no, I was able to move the payload the entire length of the last push segment on Rialto without anyone noticing until the Victory/Defeat screen went up. I told my team not to kill anyone while I was back-capping and they cooperated. Really funny game!
I replied to the post that I was adding onto (replied to the reply), but you’re right, I should have tied it back to the original question in some way.
