After 2 years of playing I shouted ārally to meā and my team actually asked why I ulted. I guess I learned a little more than mechanics with such a diverse cast of accents. ļø I canāt wait to try Echo.
Impressive, considering Brigās actual voice actor has trouble with that.
A lot of people seem to confuse accents too XD
I am french canadian and often play Mercy, and I have been asked a couple of time if I was āthe real Mercyā, although I donāt sound german at all. Happened with Sombra too, like you said it can be pretty funny
triggered Mercy Main Sheās not German XD
she isnāt german but the language she speaks is german.
āH E H Eā
easily my favority baguette line
Has trouble with what?
Sheās supposed to speak Swiss German which sounds very different from regular German.
I know Mercy is Swiss, by saying āI donāt sound germanā, I did not imply that she was German either XD I just meant that imo my voice doesnāt have any accent to it that could sound german or any variation related to it. Since Mercy speaks Swiss German, chances are that it will sound āgermanā to others who arenāt familiar with the language.
And although I am not sure how Swiss German should sound, Mercy voice actress, Lucie Pohl, is actually German-American and was born in Germany. So I have no idea if her Swiss German accent is 100% on point or not, but apparently speaking German was helpful. ^^
Also, since I donāt speak German nor Swiss German, I was wondering if Mercyās voice lines were actually in Swiss German, or if they simply gave her voice lines in German even though her motherās tongue is Swiss German? (even though Mercy motherās tongue is Swiss German, it doesnāt exclude the fact that she could also know how to speak standard German). Could also possibly be a mix of the two; some being in Standard German and other voice lines using the Swiss German variation.
Edit: Michael Chu also talked a bit about accentsā authenticity and voice actors in Overwatch: " āWe are always trying to do our best to strike a balance between an authentic accent, acting and personality,ā Chu said. āBut it doesnāt always work. Another example was Mercy. We wanted someone with a Swiss-German accent, but thatās hard to do. We liked Lucie Pohlās voice acting so we went with her.ā "
(Sombraās voice actor doesnāt mind the haters, loves her character - Polygon)
Iāve lived in Switzerland all my life, I can confirm that most of Mercyās voice lines are in German.
edit: at my workplace, i have been hearing Swiss Germans talk in English with an accent, it is slightly different from the German accent. But for non Swiss persons itās harder to distinguish. Mercyās accent sounds more like a German to me.
The only Swiss German voice line I know of is one of her āHelloā lines āHoi ZƤmeā which literally means Hallo Zusammen in German or Hi everyone in English.
I may have missed another but I donāt think so.
As a bonus, want to know why the Swiss are the best Samaritans ? Because, well⦠we have Mercy
Thank you for clarifying this Thatās what I thought but I couldnāt be sure since I donāt have experience with either German nor Swiss German.
The only time I went to Switzerland was when I was 6 years old because we were visiting family in France, and made a short trip to Switzerland during that time⦠so I really donāt remember much in the end
I hope I can visit again someday!
Haha thatās a cute one ^^
yes ! iāve been playing mercy a lot recently and been hearing her voicelines and have no idea what sheās saying ! thatās when i realized sheās not speaking swiss german but german ! i donāt know much german but iām fluent in swiss german (my parents are from switzerland) and it made so much sense to me ! also kinda frustrating how they couldnāt find a native swiss german speaker to vocie mercy
